Then, when the appointed time arrived according to the ordained order, the god, compassionate to all beings and for the welfare of the hosts of gods, with pure and sparse hair, radiant as the rising moon and conch, the Lord of gods took birth as the son of Aditi.
As Viṣṇu descended, the faces of the perfected ones, gods, and asuras with unblinking eyes became radiant; with the dust greatly subdued by the winds, even the day was bright when Viṣṇu was born in the womb.
Aditi, the queen, carrying the divine child in her womb, moved slowly, weighed down by the burden, her gait gentle, her face weary and pale, bearing the heavy, deeply entered embryo.
Then, when Nārāyaṇa truly entered the womb, by the union of past and future, all beings at that time attained their unfulfilled desires without effort.
The wind blew gently as the rains fell and the mountains arose; on lonely paths, in distant directions, among people, truth prevailed.
As the dust was released into the sky, darkness gradually vanished; when Viṣṇu was within the womb, then the intention of enmity arose.
Observe, O king, the order of the goddess, the mother of the gods; why should I recount it in sequence? I shall cross the three worlds.
I shall make that Bāṣkali, lord of the Dānavas, dwell in the netherworld; to Indra I have given wealth and beauty.
For the destruction of the Dānavas, I alone am able; I shall hurl showers of arrows and many chariot-wheels.
And various groups of maces for the destruction of the Dānavas; the gods dwelling in heaven and the Dānavas in the lower worlds.
I perform that act at the proper time, as is my vow; yet suddenly, speech emerged and stood at my mouth.
That which was previously contemplated, which was neither seen nor heard—behold, out of anger, a binding was placed upon the chief of the Daityas by me.
The wealth and beauty once given to Kaśyapa—has this wind lost its vigor, or are the winds themselves disturbed?
My vision seems to wander, as if what was conceived has taken form; possessed, what am I to say, when some unfitting word has been spoken by me?
Overcome by doubt, she bore in her heart, with constant agitation, the divine Lord for a thousand celestial years.
Then, in her, the Dwarf was born—the wondrous Vāmana—by whose birth the eyes of the Dānavas were indeed taken away.
At the very moment when that Lord of gods, Janārdana, was born, the rivers flowed with pure water, and the fragrant wind blew.
Kaśyapa too found happiness through that radiant son; the hearts of all beings dwelling in the three worlds were filled with enthusiasm.
When Janārdana, the Lord of beings, was born, the celestial drums resounded in heaven, struck by those present.
From great joy, delusion and suffering vanished from the three worlds; the hosts of Gandharvas sang with utmost devotion, mingled with radiant spirits.
The divine women, filled with emotion, danced there, along with groups of Apsarases; likewise, the assemblies of Vidyādharas and Siddhas, delighted, wandered about in their celestial vehicles.
They spoke of the discernment of truth and falsehood, displaying their skill in various ways; they sang melodious songs, their passions subdued, repeatedly overwhelmed by both sorrow and joy.
Those who had attained heaven through righteousness danced there, and from that place, they journeyed to heaven; thus, freed from sorrow, in the pure world of the living, released from the mass of darkness, they longed to attain bliss.
There, some in the sky exclaimed, 'Victory, victory, O Lord!' and others rejoiced; with such continuous cries and the echoing of hearts, others meditated in secret on the cause of birth, fear, old age, and death—thus, the entire universe everywhere was filled with joy.
Having approached the supreme Viṣṇu, Brahmā said for the sake of the world: 'This Vāmana, though Lord, is born for your sake.'
He is Brahmā and Viṣṇu; he is indeed Maheśvara; he is the Vedas and the sacrifices, and he is heaven—of this there is no doubt.
This entire world, both moving and unmoving, is pervaded by Viṣṇu; he alone, though one, is known as the Self-born, appearing as manifold.
Just as a variegated crystal gem reflects the colors of its setting, so too does the Self-born manifest according to the qualities present.
Just as the household fire may assume another designation and then regain its original name, so too does the Blessed Lord obtain his appellation among the Brāhmaṇas and others.
In every way, the god Vāmana will accomplish the task of the gods; thus thought those devoted dwellers of heaven.
