Having given double to the teacher, he should bow and ask forgiveness; whoever, being wise, performs the festival of trees in this manner—
He attains all desires and reaches the endless state; and, O king of kings, whoever likewise establishes a tree, being wise—
He too dwells in heaven for as many years as thirty-three thousand Indras, and rescues as many beings, past and future, as the number of his body hairs.
He attains the highest perfection, which is difficult to reach again; whoever always listens to or causes this to be heard, O man.
He too is worshipped by the gods and honored in Brahma's world; and for one without sons, trees themselves become as sons.
In holy places, those trees grant the benefit of offerings of rice-balls and other rites; therefore, O king, even with effort, plant an ashvattha tree.
That one tree will perform the merit of a thousand sons for you; the ashvattha tree brings wealth, and the ashoka tree removes sorrow.
The plaksha tree is said to grant the fruit of sacrifice, the ksheeri tree is known to bestow long life; the jambu tree gives daughters, and the pomegranate gives wives.
The ashvattha tree is for the destruction of diseases, and the palasha tree bestows Brahmanhood; but if one plants the vibhitaka tree, he attains the state of a departed spirit.
The ankola tree increases the family line, and the khadira tree brings health; the sun is always pleased with those who plant neem saplings.
In the shri tree dwells the god Shankara, in the patala tree Parvati; in the shimshapa tree are the apsaras, and in the kunda tree the foremost gandharvas.
In the timtidi tree are the classes of servants, and in the vanjula tree are robbers; sandalwood and jackfruit bestow merit and prosperity.
The champaka tree grants good fortune, the karira tree is for the protection of another's wife; the tala tree destroys offspring, and the bakula tree increases the family.
The coconut tree gives many wives, the grapevine makes the whole body beautiful; the kola tree bestows pleasure, the ketaki tree destroys enemies.
In this way, other trees not mentioned here also grant benefits; those by whom trees are planted will attain lasting fame.
Chapter Twenty-Nine. Pulastya said: In the same way, I will tell you another, which grants all desires—the bed of fortune, as it is known to those learned in the Puranas.
Long ago, when the worlds—earth, atmosphere, heaven, and the great realms—were burned, all fortune of beings became concentrated in one place.
All that fortune, having reached Vaikuntha, remained on the chest of Vishnu; then, after some time, O king, at the time of creation—
When the world was filled with the force of ego, along with Pradhana and Purusha, and as rivalry grew between the lotus-seated one and Krishna—
A form, tawny in color, arose, terrifying like a blazing fire; from the chest of Hari, scorched by her, that (fortune) emerged.
That fortune, which had taken refuge on Vishnu's chest, did not assume a liquid form until it reached the earth.
Lifted from the sky by the wise son of Brahma, Daksha drank it, and it became the cause of his beauty and charm.
The great strength and radiance born from Daksha, the supreme lord, fell to the earth as Śeṣa, and from it eightfold manifestations arose.
Then, seven auspicious plants were produced: the sugarcane, the king of trees, the niṣpava, the śāli rice, and the dhānya grain.
Also, as transformations, cow's milk, kusumbha, and flowers arose, as well as salt as the eighth; these are called the eight auspicious things.
What was once drunk by the son of Brahma, who was skilled in yoga and knowledge, became his daughter, who is therefore called Satī.
Because she surpassed all worlds in grace, she is called Lalitā; the wielder of the bow (Śiva) married this goddess, the most beautiful in the three worlds.
She embodies the fortune of the three worlds and grants both enjoyment and liberation; by worshipping her with devotion, what man or woman does not attain their desires?
Bhīṣma said: O sage, tell me how to worship that Lalitā, and by what method peace is brought to the world.
Pulastya said: When the spring month arrives, on the third day, beloved by the people, one should bathe with sesame in the forenoon of the bright fortnight.
