पादुकोपानहच्छत्र चामरासनदर्पणैः। भूपणैरपिसंयुक्तां फलवस्त्रानुलेपनैः
Equipped with footstools, sandals, umbrellas, fly-whisks, seats, mirrors, and also with vessels, along with fruits, cloths, and ointments,
तस्यां विधाय तत्पद्ममलंकृत्य गुणान्विताम्। कपिलां वस्त्रसंयुक्तामतिशीलां पयस्विनीम्
On that, having arranged the lotus and adorned it with virtues, he should place a tawny cow, clothed in garments, of excellent conduct, and rich in milk.
रौप्यखुरां हेमशृंगीं सवत्सां कांस्यदोहनाम्। दद्यान्मंत्रेण तां धेनुं पूर्वाह्णं नातिलंघयेत्
With silver hooves, golden horns, accompanied by a calf, and a bronze milking vessel, he should give that cow with a mantra, not neglecting the morning time.
यथैवादित्य शयनमशून्यं तव सर्वदा। कांत्या धृत्या श्रिया पुष्ट्या तथा मे संतु वृद्धयः
Just as your resting place, O Sun, is never empty, may my prosperity, steadfastness, fortune, and nourishment always increase in the same way.
यथा न देवाः श्रेयांसं त्वदन्यमनघं विदुः। तथा मामुद्धराशेष दुःखसंसारसागरात्
Just as the gods know no one greater than you, O flawless one, so may you lift me from the endless ocean of suffering and worldly existence.
ततः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य प्रणम्य च विसर्जयेत्। शय्यां गवादि तत्सर्वं द्विजस्य भवनं नयेत्
Then, having circumambulated and bowed, he should dismiss the bed, the cow, and all the rest, and take them to the house of a Brahmin.
नैतद्विशीलाय न दांभिकाय प्रकाशनीयं व्रतमिंदुमौलेः। गोविप्रदेवर्षिविकर्मयोगिनां यश्चापि निंदामधिकां विधत्ते
This vow of the moon-crested one should not be revealed to the unvirtuous or the deceitful, nor to those who revile cows, Brahmins, gods, sages, or yogis.
भक्ताय दांताय च गुह्यमेतदाख्येयमानंदकरं शिवञ्च। इदं महापातकिनां नराणां अघक्षयं वेदविदो वदंति
This secret, which brings joy and auspiciousness, should be told to a devoted and self-controlled person; the knowers of the Veda say it destroys the sins of even the greatest sinners.
न बंधुपुत्रैर्न धनैर्वियुक्तः पत्नीभिरानंदकरः सुराणां। नाभ्येति रोगं न च दुःखमोहं या चापि नारी कुरुतेथ भक्त्या
He who performs this, even if separated from relatives, sons, wealth, or wives, brings joy to the gods; he does not suffer from disease, sorrow, or delusion, nor does any woman who performs it with devotion.
इदं वसिष्ठेन पुरार्जुनेन कृतं कुबेरेण पुरंदरेण। यत्कीर्तनादप्यखिलानि नाशमायांति पापानि न संशयोत्र
This was performed by Vasiṣṭha, Arjuna of old, Kubera, and Indra; by merely reciting its glory, all sins are destroyed—there is no doubt of this.
इति पठति शृणोति वा य इत्थं रविशयनं पुरुहूतवल्लभः स्यात्। अपि नरकगतान्पितॄनशेषानपि दिवमानयतीह यः करोति
Whoever reads or hears this account of the Sun's resting place becomes beloved of Indra; even if his ancestors have gone to hell, he brings them all to heaven by performing this.
अश्वत्थं च वटं चैवोदुंबरं वृक्षमेव च। नंदीशं जंबुवृक्षं च बिल्वं प्राहुर्महर्षयः
The great sages have declared the aśvattha, vaṭa, udumbara, nandīśa, jambu, and bilva trees as suitable.
मार्गशीर्षादिमासाभ्यां द्वाभ्यां द्वाभ्यामथ क्रमात्। एकैकं दंतधवनं वृक्षेष्वेतेषु कारयेत्
In each of these trees, beginning with Mārgaśīrṣa and the following months, one should make a tooth-cleaning stick from each tree in order.
दद्यात्समाप्ते दध्यन्नं वितानध्वजचामरम्। द्विजानामुदकुंभांश्च पंचरत्नसमन्वितान्
At the conclusion, he should give curd-rice, canopies, banners, fly-whisks, and water-pots adorned with five gems to the Brahmins.
न वित्तशाठ्यं कुर्वीत कुर्वन्दोषानवाप्नुयात्
He should not act with deceit regarding wealth; if he does, he incurs faults.
भीष्म उवाच। दीर्घायुरारोग्यकुलातिवृद्धिभिर्युक्तः पुमान्रूपकुलान्वितः स्यात्। मुहुर्मुहुर्जन्मनि येन सम्यक्व्रतं समाचक्ष्व च शीतरश्मेः
Bhīṣma said: By which vow, performed repeatedly in each birth, does a man become endowed with long life, health, great family prosperity, and beauty? Please describe in detail the vow of the cool-rayed one.
पुलस्त्य उवाच। त्वया पृष्टमिदं सम्यगक्षयस्वर्गकारकम्। रहस्यं तु प्रवक्ष्यामि यत्पुराणविदो विदुः
Pulastya said: You have asked this question well, which leads to inexhaustible merit and heaven. Now I shall reveal to you the secret known to those learned in the Purāṇas.
रोहिणीचंद्रशयनं नामव्रतमिहोच्यते। तस्मिन्नारायणस्यार्चामर्चयेदिंदुनामभिः
Here, the vow called 'Rohiṇī-candra-śayana' is described. In this, one should worship an image of Nārāyaṇa with names of the moon.
यदा सोमदिने शुक्ला भवेत्पंचदशी क्वचित्। अथवा ब्रह्मनक्षत्रं पौर्णमास्यां प्रजायते
When, on a lunar day, the bright fifteenth (full moon) falls on a Monday, or when the Brahma constellation arises on the full moon, O Brahmin,
तदा स्नानं नरः कुर्यात्पंचगव्येन सर्षपैः। आप्यायस्वेति च जपेद्विद्वानष्टशतं पुनः
Then, a man should bathe with five products of the cow mixed with mustard seeds. The wise one should recite 'āpyāyasva' eight hundred times again.
शूद्रोपि परया भक्त्या पाषंडालापवर्जितः। सोमाय शांताय नमोस्तु पादावनंतधाम्नेति च जानुजंघे। ऊरुद्वयं चापि जलोदराय संपूजयेन्मेढ्रमनंगधाम्ने
Even a Śūdra, with supreme devotion and avoiding heretical speech, should worship Soma, the peaceful one, saying: 'Homage to you, O endless abode, at your feet and shanks.' He should worship both thighs as belonging to Jalodara, and the genital as the abode of Kāma.
नमोनमः कामसुखप्रदाय कटिः शशांकस्य सदार्चनीयः। तथोदरं चाप्यमृतोदराय नाभिः शशांकाय नमोभिपूज्या
Repeated homage to the giver of pleasure and delight; the waist of the moon is always to be worshipped. Likewise, the belly is to be worshipped as belonging to Amṛtodara, and the navel as belonging to the moon, with reverence.
नमोस्तु चंद्राय मुखं च नित्यं दंता द्विजानामधिपाय पूज्याः। हास्यं नमश्चंद्रमसेऽभिपूज्यमोष्ठौ तु कौमोदवनप्रियाय
Homage to Candra, and the face is always to be worshipped; the teeth are to be honored as the lords of the twice-born. The smile is to be worshipped as belonging to Candramas, and the lips as dear to the forest of Kumuda flowers.
नासा च नाथाय वरौषधीनामानंदबीजाय पुनर्भ्रुवौ च। नेत्रद्वयं पद्मनिभं तथेंदोरिंदीवरव्यासकराय शौरेः
The nose is to be worshipped as lord of the best herbs, and the eyebrows as the source of joy. Both eyes, lotus-like, are to be worshipped as belonging to the moon, and the hands as the creators of blue lotuses, O Śauri.
नमः समस्ताध्वरपूजिताय कर्णद्वयं दैत्यनिषूदनाय। ललाटमिंदोरुदधिप्रियाय केशाः सुषुम्नाधिपतेः प्रपूज्याः
Homage to the one worshipped in all sacrifices; both ears are to be worshipped as destroyers of demons. The forehead is to be worshipped as dear to the lord of the moon, and the hair as belonging to the lord of Suṣumnā.
शिरः शशांकाय नमो मुरारेर्विश्वेश्वरायाथ नमः किरीटं। पद्मप्रिये रोहिणीनाम लक्ष्मि सौभाग्यसौख्यामृतसागराय
The head is to be worshipped as belonging to the moon; homage to Murāri and to the lord of the universe. The crown is to be worshipped as dear to Lakṣmī, named Rohiṇī, beloved of the lotus, and the ocean of fortune, happiness, and nectar.
दैवीं च संपूज्य सुगंधिपुष्पैर्नैवेद्यधूपादिभिरिंदुपत्नीम्। सुप्त्वा तु भूमौ पुनरुत्थितो यः स्नात्वा च विप्राय हविष्यभुक्तः
Having worshipped the goddess, the wife of the moon, with fragrant flowers, offerings, incense, and the like, one should sleep on the ground. Upon rising, after bathing, one should offer food to a Brāhmaṇa.
देयः प्रभाते सहिरण्य वारिकुंभो नमः पापविनाशनाय। संप्राश्य गोमूत्रममांसमन्नमक्षारमष्टावथ विंशतिं च
In the morning, one should give a water pot with gold, saying 'Homage to the destroyer of sins.' Having tasted cow's urine, one should eat non-meat, non-salty food, eight or twenty times.
ग्रासांश्च त्रीन्सर्पियुतानुपोष्य भुक्त्वेतिहासं शृणुयान्मुहूर्तं । कदंबनीलोत्पलकेतकानि जातिःसरोजं शतपत्रिका च
One should take three morsels mixed with ghee, observe fasting, and listen to stories for a while. Kadamba, blue lotus, ketaka, jasmine, red lotus, and a hundred-petaled lotus should be used.
अम्लानपुष्पाण्यथ सिंदुवारं पुष्पं पुनर्भारतमल्लिकायाः। शुक्लं च पुष्पं करवीरपुष्पं श्रीचंपकं चंद्रमसे प्रदेयम्
Unwithered flowers, sinduvāra, and again flowers of mallikā, white flowers, karavīra flowers, śrī-campaka, should be offered to Candramas.
