तामुपोष्याथ विधिवदनेनैव क्रमेण तु।। तद्वद्धेमफलं दत्वा सुवर्णकमलान्वितम्
Having fasted on that day as prescribed, in the same order, one should give a golden fruit adorned with a golden lotus.
शर्करापात्रसंयुक्तं वस्त्रमालासमन्वितम्।। संवत्सरमनेनैव विधिनोभयसप्तमीम्
Accompanied by a vessel of sugar and a garlanded cloth; for a year, in this manner, one should observe both Saptamīs.
उपोष्य दद्यात्क्रमशः सूर्यमंत्रमुदीरयेत्।। भानुरर्को रविर्ब्रह्मा सूर्यः शुक्रो हरिः शिवः
Having fasted, one should give in order and recite the Sūrya mantra: 'Bhānu, Arka, Ravi, Brahmā, Sūrya, Śukra, Hari, Śiva,'
श्रीमान्विभावसुस्त्वष्टा वरुणः प्रीयतामिति।। प्रतिमासं च सप्तम्यामेकैकं नाम कीर्त्तयेत्
'Śrīmān, Vibhāvasu, Tvaṣṭā, Varuṇa—may they be pleased.' On each Saptamī of every month, one should recite each name in turn.
प्रतिपक्षं फलत्यागमेतत्कुर्वन्समाचरेत्।। व्रतांते विप्रमिथुनं पूजयेद्वस्त्रभूषणैः
One should perform this offering at the conclusion of the vow, giving it to the opposing side; at the end of the observance, one should honor a pair of Brahmins with garments and ornaments.
शर्कराकलशं दद्याद्धेमपद्मफलान्वितम्।। यथा न विफलः कामस्त्वद्भक्तानां सदा भवेत्
One should give a pot filled with sugar and golden lotuses as fruit, so that the desires of your devotees may never go unfulfilled.
तथानंतफलावाप्तिरस्तु मे जन्मजन्मनि।। इमामनंतफलदां यः कुर्यात्फलसप्तमीम्
May I obtain endless fruit, birth after birth; whoever performs this seventh fruit-giving, which bestows endless rewards—
भूतभव्यांश्च पुरुषांस्तारयेदेकविंशतिम्।। यः शृणोति पठेद्वापि सोपि कल्याणभाग्भवेत्
—he delivers twenty-one persons, past and future; whoever hears or recites this also attains auspiciousness.
सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा सूर्यलोके महीयते।। सुरापानादिकं किंञ्चिदत्रामुत्र च वा कृतम्
With all sins cleansed, he is honored in the world of the Sun; whatever sin, such as drinking liquor, may have been committed here or elsewhere—
तत्सर्वं नाशमायाति यः कुर्यात्फलसप्तमीम्।। शर्करासप्तमीं वक्ष्ये तद्वत्कल्मषनाशिनीम्
—all of that is destroyed for the one who performs the seventh fruit-giving; now I will explain the Sugar Seventh, which likewise destroys sin.
आयुरारोग्यमैश्वर्यं ययानंतं प्रजायते।। माधवस्य सिते पक्षे सप्तम्यां नियतव्रतः
By which endless life, health, and prosperity arise; in the bright fortnight of Mādhava, on the seventh day, one should observe the vow with discipline.
प्रातः स्नात्वा तिलैः शुभ्रैः शुद्धमाल्यानुलेपनः।। स्थंडिले पद्ममालिख्य कुंकुमेन सकर्णिकम्
After bathing in the morning, anointed with pure white sesame and clean garlands, one should draw a lotus with a pericarp on the ground using saffron.
तस्मिन्नमः सवित्रेति गंधपुष्पं निवेदयेत्।। स्थापयेदुदकुंभं च शर्करापात्रसंयुतम्
On that, offering fragrance and flowers with the mantra 'Salutation to Savitṛ,' one should place a water-pot together with a vessel of sugar.
शुक्लवस्त्रैरलंकृत्य शुक्लमाल्यानुलेपनैः।। स्वर्णपुष्पसमायुक्तं मंत्रेणानेन पूजयेत्
Adorned with white garments, white garlands, and ointments, and joined with golden flowers, one should worship with this mantra.
विश्ववेदमयो यस्मात्त्वं वेदेषु च पठ्यसे।। त्वमेवामृतसर्वस्वमतः शांतिं प्रयच्छ मे
Because you are composed of all the Vedas and are recited in the Vedas, you alone are the essence of immortality; therefore, grant me peace.
पंचगव्यं ततः पीत्वा स्वपेत्तत्पार्श्वतः क्षितौ।। सौरसूक्तं जपन्नास्ते पुराणश्रवणेन च
Then, after drinking pañcagavya, one should sleep on the ground beside it, remaining there reciting the Sūrya hymn and listening to the Purāṇas.
अहोरात्रे गते पश्चादष्टम्यां कृतनैत्यकः।। तत्सर्वं वेदविदुषे ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत्
When day and night have passed, on the eighth day, after performing the daily rites, one should offer all of this to a Brahmin learned in the Vedas.
भोजयेच्छक्तितो विप्रान्शर्कराघृतपायसैः।। भुंजीतातैललवणं स्वयमप्यथ वाग्यतः
One should feed Brahmins as able with sugar, ghee, and rice pudding; oneself should eat food without oil or salt, remaining self-controlled.
अनेन विधिना सर्वं मासिमासि समाचरेत्।। संवत्सरांते शयनं शर्कराकलशान्वितम्
In this manner, one should perform the entire observance every month; at the end of the year, one should give a bed with a pot of sugar.
सर्वोपस्करसंयुक्तं तथैकांगां पयस्विनीम्।। गृहं च शक्तिमान्दद्यात्समस्तोपस्करान्वितम्
Together with all necessary articles, and likewise a single-limbed milch cow; and, if able, one should give a house furnished with all equipment.
सहस्रेणाथ निष्काणां कृत्वा दद्याच्छतेन वा।। दशभिर्वा त्रिभिर्वापि निष्केणैकेन वा पुनः
One should give, having made a thousand niṣkas, or with a hundred, or with ten, or three, or even with a single niṣka.
पद्मं स्वशक्तितो दद्यात्पूर्ववन्मंत्रपाठनम्।। वित्तशाठ्यं न कुर्वीत कुर्वन्दोषान्समश्नुते
One should give a lotus according to one's ability, reciting the mantra as before; one should not act deceitfully with wealth, for one who does so partakes of the faults.
अमृतं पिबतो वक्त्रात्सूर्यस्यामृतबिंदवः।। समुत्पेतुर्द्धरण्यां ये शालिमुद्गेक्षवस्तु ते
Drops of nectar fell from the mouth of the Sun as he drank the amṛta; those drops became rice, mung beans, and barley upon the earth.
शर्करायारसस्तस्मादिक्षुसारोमृतात्मवान्।। इष्टारवेरतः पुण्या शर्करा हव्यकव्ययोः
From that, the essence of sugarcane, whose nature is nectar, arose; sugar is sacred for offerings to both gods and ancestors.
शर्करासप्तमी चेयं वाजिमेधफलप्रदा।। सर्वदुष्टोपशमनी पुत्रपौत्रविवर्धिनी
This seventh day dedicated to sugar is the giver of the fruit of the horse sacrifice; it pacifies all evils and increases sons and grandsons.
यः कुर्यात्परया भक्त्या स परं ब्रह्म गच्छति।। कल्पमेकं वसेत्स्वर्गे ततो याति परं पदम्
Whoever performs it with supreme devotion attains the highest Brahman; he dwells in heaven for a kalpa and then reaches the supreme state.
इदमनघ शृणोति यः स्मरेद्वा परिपठतीह सुरेश्वरस्य लोके।। मतिमपि च ददाति सोपि देवैरमरपुरे परिपूज्यते मुनीन्द्रैः
Whoever, O sinless one, hears, remembers, or recites this in the realm of the lord of gods, is granted wisdom and is honored by the gods and sages in the city of immortals.
अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि तद्वत्कमलसप्तमीम्।। यस्यास्संकीर्त्तनादेव तुष्यतीह दिवाकरः
Next, I will declare the lotus seventh day, by whose mere invocation the Sun is pleased here.
वसंतामलसप्तम्यां सुस्नातो गौरसर्षपैः।। तिलपात्रे च सौवर्णं निधाय कमलं शुभम्
On the pure seventh day of spring, having bathed well with white mustard, one should place a beautiful lotus made of gold in a sesame vessel.
वस्त्रयुग्मावृतं कृत्वा गंधपुष्पैरथार्चयेत्।। नमस्ते पद्महस्ताय नमस्ते विश्वधारिणे
Wrapping it with a pair of cloths, one should worship it with fragrant flowers; 'Salutations to the lotus-handed, salutations to the sustainer of the universe.'
