The auspicious Saptamī always pacifies all evils; whoever observes this Saptamī, which grants endless fruits,
Whoever hears or recites it is freed from sins; likewise, O best of kings, I will describe the Viśoka Saptamī.
By observing which, a man never experiences sorrow here; in Māgha, having bathed with black sesame on the fifth day of the bright fortnight,
Having eaten, with rice gruel, after brushing the teeth, having observed the vow of fasting, let the celibate sleep at night.
Then, rising at dawn, pure after bathing and reciting, having made a golden lotus, one should worship the Sun.
With a red oleander and a pair of red garments; just as you, O Sun, always make the world free from sorrow.
In this way, may I be free from sorrow, may I have devotion to you in every birth. Thus, on the sixth day, one should worship the twice-born with devotion.
Having personally sipped cow urine, having risen and performed daily rites, one should carefully worship the Brahmins, providing a vessel of jaggery.
One should offer to the Brahmin a pair of good garments and a lotus; having eaten food without oil and salt, on the seventh day, one should observe silence.
After that, one desiring prosperity should listen to the Purāṇas; this procedure should be followed in both fortnights.
One should continue this until the seventh day of the bright half of Māgha returns; at the conclusion of the vow, one should give a pot adorned with a golden lotus.
One should give a bed with its furnishings and a tawny, milk-giving cow; whoever performs this rite without miserliness regarding wealth,
And observes the Viśoka Saptamī, attains the highest state; for as many as a hundred crore thousand lifetimes,
He does not experience sorrow, remaining free from disease and misfortune; whatever desire he wishes for, he obtains in abundance.
But whoever performs it without desire attains the Supreme Brahman; whoever recites or hears the Saptamī called Viśokā,
He too, reaching the world of Indra, is never born into suffering; now I will declare another, called the Phala Saptamī.
By observing which, a man, freed from sins, attains heaven; in the auspicious month of Mārgaśīrṣa, on the fifth day, with a firm vow,
Having fasted on the sixth day, one should have a golden lotus made; one should give it, together with sugar, to a Brahmin with family.
Making a golden image of a fruit, the knower of dharma should give it at both times of day, saying, 'May the Sun be pleased with me.'
Having worshipped the Brahmins according to ability, on the seventh day one should take a meal of milk; having done so, one should offer the fruit until the Kṛṣṇa Saptamī arrives.
Having fasted on that day as prescribed, in the same order, one should give a golden fruit adorned with a golden lotus.
Accompanied by a vessel of sugar and a garlanded cloth; for a year, in this manner, one should observe both Saptamīs.
Having fasted, one should give in order and recite the Sūrya mantra: 'Bhānu, Arka, Ravi, Brahmā, Sūrya, Śukra, Hari, Śiva,'
'Śrīmān, Vibhāvasu, Tvaṣṭā, Varuṇa—may they be pleased.' On each Saptamī of every month, one should recite each name in turn.
One should perform this offering at the conclusion of the vow, giving it to the opposing side; at the end of the observance, one should honor a pair of Brahmins with garments and ornaments.
One should give a pot filled with sugar and golden lotuses as fruit, so that the desires of your devotees may never go unfulfilled.
May I obtain endless fruit, birth after birth; whoever performs this seventh fruit-giving, which bestows endless rewards—
—he delivers twenty-one persons, past and future; whoever hears or recites this also attains auspiciousness.
With all sins cleansed, he is honored in the world of the Sun; whatever sin, such as drinking liquor, may have been committed here or elsewhere—
—all of that is destroyed for the one who performs the seventh fruit-giving; now I will explain the Sugar Seventh, which likewise destroys sin.
