रजतं पाहि तस्मान्नः शोकसंसारसागरात्।। इत्थं निवेश्य यो दद्याद्रजताचलमुत्तमम्
'Protect us, O silver, from the ocean of sorrow and worldly existence.' Thus, whoever establishes and gives the supreme silver mountain—
गवामयुतसाहस्रफलमाप्नोति मानवः।। सोमलोके सगंधर्वैः किन्नराप्सरसांगणैः
A person obtains the fruit equal to ten thousand cows. In the realm of Soma, with Gandharvas, Kinnaras, and groups of Apsaras—
पूज्यमानो वसेद्विद्वान्यावदाभूतसंप्लवम्।। अथातः संप्रवक्ष्यामि शर्कराचलमुत्तमम्
Honored, the wise one dwells there until the great dissolution. Now, I shall describe the excellent mountain of sugar.
यस्य प्रदानाद्विष्ण्वर्करुद्रास्तुष्यंति सर्वदा।। अष्टभिः शर्कराभारैरुत्तमः स्यान्महाचलः
By whose offering, Vishnu, the Sun, and Rudra are always pleased. The great mountain is supreme with eight loads of sugar.
चतुर्भिर्मध्यमः प्रोक्तो भाराभ्यामधमः स्मृतः।। भारेण चार्द्धभारेणकुर्याद्यः स्वल्पवित्तवान्
The middle one is said to be four; the inferior is considered two loads. One with little wealth may make it with one or half a load.
विष्कंभपर्वतान्कुर्यात्तुरीयांशेन मानवः।। धान्यपर्वतवत्सर्वं हैमांबरसुसंयुतम्
A person should make the supporting mountains with a fourth part. All should be made like the grain mountain, adorned with golden garments.
मेरोरुपरितः स्थाप्यं हैमं तत्र तरुत्रयम्।। मंदारः पारिजातश्च तृतीयः कल्पपादपः
Above Meru, one should place three golden trees there: Mandara, Parijata, and the third, the wish-fulfilling tree.
एतद्वृक्षत्रयं मूर्ध्नि सर्वेष्वपि निवेशयेत्।। हरिचंदनसंतानौ पूर्वपश्चिमभागयोः
This trio of trees should be placed on the summit of all, and sandalwood and champaka trees on the eastern and western sides.
निवेश्यौ सर्वशैलेषु विशेषाच्छर्कराचले।। मंदरे कामदेवस्तु प्रत्यग्वक्त्रः सदा भवेत्
These should be placed on every mountain, especially on the sugar mountain. On Mandara, the god of desire should always face west.
गंधमादनशृंगे तु धनदः स्यादुदङ्मुखः।। प्राङ्मुखो वेदमूर्त्तिस्तु हंसः स्याद्विपुलाचले२०० 1.21.
On the peak of Gandhamadana, Kubera should face north. On the great mountain, the form of the Vedas, the swan, should face east.
हैमी भवेत्सुपार्श्वे तु सुरभी दक्षिणामुखी।। धान्यपर्वतवत्सर्वमावाहनमखादिकम्
A golden vessel should be placed at the side, and a cow facing south; all the rites from the invocation to the conclusion should be performed as with the mountain of grain.
कृत्वाथ गुरवे दद्यान्मध्यमं पर्वतोत्तमम्।। ऋत्विग्भ्यश्चतुरः शैलानिमान्मंत्रानुदीरयेत्
Then, having done so, one should give the best of the middle mountains to the teacher, and four mountains to the priests, reciting these mantras.
सौभाग्यामृतसारोयं परमः शर्कराचलः।। तस्मादानंदकारी त्वं भवशैलेंद्र सर्वदा
This supreme mountain of sugar is the nectar of good fortune; therefore, O king of mountains, always be the giver of happiness.
अमृतं पिबतां ये तु पतिता भुवि शीकराः।। देवानां तत्समुत्थस्त्वं पाहि नः शर्कराचल
The drops that fall to the earth when the nectar is drunk—arising from the gods—O sugar mountain, protect us.
मनोभवधनुर्मध्यादुद्भूता शर्करा पुनः।। तन्मयोसि महाशैल पाहि संसारसागरात्
Sugar, which arose from the middle of the bow of Kāma, you are that great mountain; protect us from the ocean of worldly existence.
यो दद्याच्छर्कराशैलमनेन विधिना नरः।। सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः प्रयाति ब्रह्ममंदिरम्
Whoever gives a sugar mountain in this manner, being a man, is freed from all sins and attains the abode of Brahman.
चंद्रसूर्यप्रतीकाशमधिरुह्यानुजीविभिः।। सहैव यानमुत्तिष्ठेत्ततो विष्णुप्रभो दिवि
Ascending a vehicle shining like the moon and sun, together with his dependents, he then proceeds to the heaven of Lord Viṣṇu.
ततः कल्पशतांते तु सप्तद्वीपाधिपो भवेत्।। आयुरारोग्यसंपन्नो यावज्जन्मायुतत्रयम्
Then, at the end of a hundred kalpas, he becomes lord of the seven islands, endowed with long life, health, and prosperity for three thousand births.
भोजनं शक्तितः कुर्यात्सर्वशैलेष्वमत्सरः।। स्वयं चाक्षारलवणमश्नीयात्तदनुज्ञया
One should provide food to the best of one’s ability for all the mountains, without envy, and oneself may eat uncooked salt with their permission.
पर्वतोपस्करान्सर्वान्प्रापयेद्ब्राह्मणालयम्।। एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं शैलदानमनुत्तमम्
All the implements used for the mountains should be given to a brāhmaṇa’s house; thus, I have told you everything about the supreme gift of mountains.
यदन्यद्रोचते तुभ्यं तन्मां पृच्छस्व पार्थिव भगवन्भवसंसारसागरोत्तारकारकम्
If there is anything else you desire, O king, ask me—that which delivers from the ocean of worldly existence.
किंचिद्व्रतं समाचक्ष्व स्वर्गारोग्यफलप्रदम् सौरधर्मं प्रवक्ष्यामि नाम्ना कल्याणसप्तमीम्
Tell me of some vow that grants the fruits of heaven and health; I will explain the solar dharma called the Auspicious Seventh.
विशोकसप्तमीं तद्वत्तृतीयां फलसप्तमीम्।। शर्करासप्तमीं कुर्यात्तथा कमलसप्तमीम्
One should observe the Viśoka Saptamī, likewise the Phala Saptamī on the third day, the Sugar Saptamī, and also the Lotus Saptamī.
मंदारसप्तमीं षष्ठीं सप्तमीं शुभसप्तमीम्।। सर्वाः पुण्यफलाः प्रोक्ताः सर्वा देवर्षिपूजिताः
The Mandāra Saptamī, the Sixth Saptamī, and the Auspicious Saptamī—all these are said to yield holy fruits and are worshipped by gods and sages.
विधानमासां वक्ष्यामि यथावदनुपूर्वशः।। यदा तु शुक्लसप्तम्यामादित्यस्य दिनं भवेत्
I will explain the procedure for these, properly and in order; when the seventh lunar day of the bright fortnight falls on the day of the sun.
सा तु कल्याणिनी नाम विजया च निगद्यते।। प्रातर्गव्येन पयसा स्नानं नद्यां समाचरेत्
That day is called Auspicious and also known as Victorious; in the morning, one should bathe in a river with cow’s milk.
शुक्लांबरधरः पद्ममक्षतैः परिकल्पयेत्।। प्राङ्मुखोष्टदलं मध्ये तद्वद्वृत्तां च कर्णिकाम्
Wearing white garments, one should arrange a lotus with unbroken rice grains, placing the petal in the center facing east, and likewise a round pericarp.
पुष्पाक्षताद्भिर्देवेशं विन्यसेत्सर्वतः क्रमात्।। पूर्वेण तपनायेति मार्तंडायेति वै ततः
With flowers and unbroken rice grains, one should place the Lord of the gods all around in order; to the east, as Tapanā, and then as Mārtaṇḍa.
याम्ये दिवाकरायेति विधात्र इति नैर्ऋते।। पश्चिमे वरुणायेति भास्करायेति चानिले
In the southeast, offer to Divākara; in the southwest, to Vidhātri; in the west, to Varuṇa; to Bhāskara and also to Anila.
सौम्ये विकर्तनायेति देवायेत्यष्टमे दले।। आदावंते च मध्ये चनमोस्तु परमात्मने
In the northeast, to Vikartana; to Deva in the eighth petal; at the beginning, end, and center, let it be for the Supreme Self.
