सुवर्णशृंगाभरणौ राजताढ्य खुरौ च तौ।। नानाफलसमायुक्तौ घ्राणगंधकरंडकौ
Adorned with golden ornaments on their horns, and hooves rich with silver; endowed with various fruits, and with nostrils like fragrant boxes.
इत्येवं रचयित्वा तु धूपदीपैस्तथार्चयेत्।। या लक्ष्मीस्सर्वभूतानां या च देवेष्ववस्थिता
Having thus fashioned them, one should worship with incense and lamps, invoking that Lakṣmī who abides among all beings and who dwells among the gods.
धेनुरूपेण सा देवी मम पापं व्यपोहतु।। विष्णोर्वक्षसि या लक्ष्मीः स्वाहा या च विभावसौ
May that goddess, in the form of a cow, remove my sin; Lakṣmī who is on Viṣṇu's chest, Svāhā, and she who is in the fire.
चंद्रार्कशक्रशक्तिर्या सा धेनुर्वरदास्तु मे।। स्वधा त्वं पितृमुख्यानां स्वाहा यज्ञभुजां यतः
She who is the power of the moon, sun, Indra, and Śakti—may that wish-granting cow be mine; you are Svadhā for the ancestors, Svāhā for the eaters of the sacrifice.
सर्वपापहरा धेनुस्तस्माद्भूतिं प्रयच्छ मे।। एवमामंत्र्य तां धेनुं ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत्
The cow removes all sins, therefore grant me prosperity; having thus invoked her, one should present that cow to a brāhmaṇa.
विधानमेतद्धेनूनां सर्वासामपि पठ्यते।। यास्तु पापविनाशिन्यः पठ्यंते दश धेनवः
This is the procedure for all cows, as is recited; now are told the ten cows that destroy sin.
तासां स्वरूपं वक्ष्यामि नामानि च नराधिप।। प्रथमा गुडधेनुः स्याद्घृतधेनुरथापरा
I will describe their forms and names, O king; the first is called the jaggery cow, the second the ghee cow.
तिलधेनुस्तृतीया च चतुर्थी जलनामिका।। क्षीरधेनुः पंचमी च मधुधेनुस्तथापरा
The third is the sesame cow, the fourth is named water; the fifth is the milk cow, the next is the honey cow.
सप्तमी शर्कराधेनुरष्टमी दधिकल्पिता।। रसधेनुश्च नवमी दशमी स्यात्स्वरूपतः
The seventh is the sugar cow, the eighth is made of curds; the ninth is the juice cow, and the tenth is by nature itself.
कुंभास्स्यू रसधेनूनामितरासां स्वराशयः।। सुवर्णधेनुं चाप्यत्र केचिदिच्छंति मानवाः
The pots are for the juice cows, and the others are of their own substances; some people here desire a golden cow.
नवनीतेन तैलैश्च तथान्येपि महर्षयः।। एतदेवविधानं स्यात्त एवोपस्करास्स्मृताः
With fresh butter, with oils, and likewise with other things, the great sages have prescribed this very procedure; these are considered the proper implements.
मंत्रावाहनसंयुक्ताः सदा पर्वणि पर्वणि।। यथा श्राद्धं प्रदातव्या भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदाः
Accompanied by mantras and proper invocation, always at each festival; as at a śrāddha, they should be given, bestowing both enjoyment and liberation.
गुडधेनुप्रसंगेन सर्वास्तव मयोदिताः।। अशेषयज्ञफलदाः सर्वपापहराः शुभाः
In connection with the jaggery cow, all these have been explained by me; they bestow the full fruit of sacrifice, remove all sins, and are auspicious.
व्रतानामुत्तमं यस्माद्विशोकद्वादशीव्रतम्।। तदंगत्वेन चैवात्र गुडधेनुः प्रशस्यते
Because among vows, the Viśoka Dvādaśī vow is supreme; and as a part of that, the jaggery cow is especially praised here.
अयने विषुवे पुण्ये व्यतीपाते तथा पुनः।। गुडधेन्वादयो देया उपरागादिपर्वसु
On the auspicious solstice, equinox, and again at planetary conjunctions, offerings such as jaggery and cows should be given during eclipses and similar sacred occasions.
विशोकद्वादशी चैषा सर्वपापहरा शुभा।। यामुपोष्य नरो याति तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम्
This Viśoka Dvādaśī is auspicious, removes all sins, and brings joy; whoever observes it attains the supreme abode of Viṣṇu.
इहलोके स सौभाग्यमायुरारोग्यमेव च।। वैष्णवं पुरमाप्नोति मरणे स्मरणं हरेः
In this world, he gains good fortune, long life, and health; at death, he attains the Vaiṣṇava city and remembers Hari.
नवार्बुदसहस्राणि दश चाष्टौ च धर्मवित्।। न शोकदुःखदौर्गत्यं तस्य संजायते नृप
For nine thousand eight hundred and eighteen cycles, O king, the knower of dharma does not experience sorrow, suffering, or misfortune.
नारी वा कुरुते या तु विशोकद्वादशीमिमां।। नृत्यगीतपरा नित्यं सापि तत्फलमाप्नुयात्
If a woman performs this Viśoka Dvādaśī, always devoted to dance and song, she too attains that result.
यस्मादग्रे हरेर्नृत्यमनन्तं गीतवादनम् मधुमुरनरकारेरर्चनं वाथ पश्येत्
Because she witnesses the endless dance, song, and music before Hari, or the worship of Madhusudana, Mura, and Naraka.
मतिमपि च जनानां यो ददातीन्द्रलोके भीष्म उवाच।। भगवन्श्रोतुमिच्छामि दानमाहात्म्यमुत्तमम्
He who grants wisdom to people in Indra's realm—Bhīṣma said: O Lord, I wish to hear the supreme greatness of giving.
यदक्षयं परे लोके देवर्षिगणपूजितम् मेरोः प्रदानं वक्ष्यामि दशधा नृपसत्तम
That which is imperishable in the highest world, honored by gods and sages, I will describe the tenfold gift of Meru, O best of kings.
यत्प्रदातानंतलोकान्प्राप्नोति सुरपूजितान्।। पुराणेषु च वेदेषु यज्ञेष्वायतनेषु च
By giving it, one attains the worlds revered by the gods; in the Purāṇas, Vedas, sacrifices, and temples.
न तत्फलमधीतेषु कृतेष्विह यदश्नुते।। तस्माद्दानं प्रवक्ष्यामि पर्वतानामनुक्रमात्
That fruit is not obtained by study or ritual here; therefore, I will explain the giving of mountains in order.
प्रथमो धान्यशैलः स्यादिद्वतीयो लवणाचलः।। गुडाचलस्तृतीयस्तु चतुर्थो हेमपर्वतः
The first is the mountain of grain, the second is the mountain of salt; the third is the mountain of jaggery, the fourth is the mountain of gold.
पंचमस्तिलशैलस्स्यात्षष्टः कार्प्पासपर्वतः।। सप्तमो घृतशैलः स्याद्रत्नशैलस्तथाष्टमः
The fifth is the mountain of sesame, the sixth is the mountain of cotton; the seventh is the mountain of ghee, the eighth is the mountain of gems.
राजतो नवमस्तद्वद्दशमः शर्कराचलः।। वक्ष्ये विधानमेतेषां यथावदनुपूर्वशः
The ninth is the mountain of silver, and the tenth is the mountain of sugar; I will describe their proper procedures in sequence.
अयनो वेपुण्ये व्यतीपाते दिनक्षये।। शुक्लपक्षे तृतीयायामुपरागेश शिक्षये
On the solstice, equinox, planetary conjunction, at the end of the day, on the third day of the bright fortnight, during an eclipse, and at the prescribed time.
विवाहोत्सवयज्ञेषु द्वादश्यामथवा पुनः।। शुक्लायां पंचदश्यां वा पुण्यर्क्षे वा विधानतः
During weddings, festivals, sacrifices, on the twelfth day, or again on the fifteenth day of the bright fortnight, or on an auspicious star, according to the rules.
धान्यशैलादयो देयाः कार्तिक्यां ज्येष्ठपुष्करे।। तीर्थेष्वायतने वापि गोष्ठे वा भवनांगणे
Mountains of grain and others should be given at Kārtikī, at Jyeṣṭha Puṣkara, at sacred places, temples, cow pens, or in the courtyard of a house.
