एतद्भवेच्च सर्वस्वं धातूनामिव कांचनम्। सर्वभूतहितं राजन्नधीत्यामृतमश्नुते
This should be regarded as everything, like gold among metals. Having studied what benefits all beings, one attains immortality, O king.
एवं वै धर्मसर्वस्वमुक्त्वा ते तु शुनःसखम्। तेनैव सहिताः सर्वे निविष्टास्सरसस्तटे
Thus, having spoken the essence of all dharma to you, O Śunaḥśakha, all of them, together with him, settled on the bank of the lake.
सरोपश्यन्सुविस्तीर्णं पद्मोत्पलजलावृतम्। तत्रावतारं कृत्वा ते बिसानि च कलापशः
Seeing the lake, vast and covered with lotuses and water-lilies, they descended there and gathered lotus-stalks in bundles.
तीरे निक्षिप्य सरसश्चक्रुः पुण्यां जलक्रियाम्। अथोत्तीर्य जलात्तस्मात्ते समेत्य परस्परम्
Placing the bundles on the shore of the lake, they performed auspicious water-rites. Then, coming out of the water, they assembled together.
बिसान्येतान्यपश्यंत इदं वचनमब्रुवन्। ऋषय ऊचुः। केन क्षुधाभितप्तानामस्माकं पापकर्मणाम्
Seeing that the lotus roots were missing, they spoke these words: The sages said: By whom, among us who are tormented by hunger and burdened with sinful deeds,
नृशंसेनापनीतानि बिसान्याहारकांक्षिणा। ते शंकमानास्त्वन्योन्यं पर्यपृच्छन्द्विजोत्तमाः
have the lotus roots been taken away cruelly by someone desiring food? Then, suspecting one another, the best of the twice-born questioned each other.
चक्रुश्च निश्चयं सर्वे शपथं प्रति पार्थिव। कश्यप उवाच। सर्वत्र सर्वं हरतु न्यासलोपं करोतु च
And all of them resolved to take an oath, O King. Kaśyapa said: May whoever has stolen the lotus roots lose everything everywhere, and may he commit the offense of violating a trust.
कूटसाक्षित्वमभ्येतु बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। दंभेन धर्मं चरतु राजानं चोपसेवताम्
Let him become a false witness, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Let him act piously with hypocrisy and serve kings.
मधुमांसं समश्नातु बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। अनृतं भाषतु सदा विषयांश्चोपसेवतु
Let him eat honey and meat, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Let him always speak falsehood and indulge in sensual pleasures.
ददातु कन्यां शुल्केन बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। वसिष्ठ उवाच। अनृतौ मैथुनं यातु दिवास्वप्नं निषेवतु
Let him give his daughter in marriage for a price, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Vasiṣṭha said: Let him engage in sexual union unlawfully and indulge in daydreaming.
अन्योन्यातिथितामेतु बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। एककूपे वसेद्ग्रामे ब्राह्मणो वृषलीपतिः
Let him take food as a guest from one another, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Let a Brahmin, lord of a low-caste woman, dwell alone in a village with a single well.
तस्य सालोक्यतां यातु बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। भरद्वाज उवाच। नृशंसस्सोऽस्तु सर्वेषु समृध्या चाप्यहंकृतः
Let him attain the same world as such a one, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Bharadvāja said: Let him be cruel to all and arrogant in prosperity.
मत्सरी पिशुनश्चैव बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। प्रत्याक्रोशत्ववाक्रुष्टस्ताडयत्वन्यताडितः३५० 1.19.
Let him be envious and slanderous, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Let him be insulted when he insults, and struck when he strikes another.
विक्रीणातु रसांश्चैव बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। गौतम उवाच। अतिथिं त्वागतं प्राप्य पाकभेदं करोतु सः
Let him sell juices, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Gautama said: Let him, upon receiving a guest, serve food of inferior quality.
शूद्रान्नं च सदाश्नातु बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। दत्वा दानं कीर्तयतु परभार्यासु तुष्यतु
Let him always eat food prepared by a Śūdra, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Let him boast after giving gifts and find pleasure in other men's wives.
एकाकीमिष्टमश्नीयाद्बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। विश्वामित्र उवाच। नित्यकामपरः सोस्तु दिवसे चैव मैथुनी
Let him eat his favorite food alone, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Viśvāmitra said: Let him always be devoted to desire and engage in sexual acts during the day.
नित्यं तु पातकी चैव बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। परापवादं वदतु परदारांश्च सेवतु
Let him always be a sinner, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Let him speak ill of others and consort with other men's wives.
परनिंदारतश्चास्तु बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। मातरं पितरं चैव सोवमन्यतु दुर्मतिः
Let him be devoted to slandering others, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Let him, being of wicked mind, disrespect his mother and father.
समातर्यन्यबुद्धिस्याद् बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। परपाकं सदाश्नातु परनारीं च सेवतु
Let him regard his mother as another's, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Let him always eat food prepared by others and consort with other men's wives.
वेदविक्रयकृच्चास्तु बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। जमदग्निरुवाच। परस्य यातु प्रेष्यत्वं स तु जन्मनि जन्मनि
Let him be one who sells the Vedas, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Jamadagni said: Let him become the servant of another, birth after birth.
सर्वधर्मक्रियाहीनो बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। शुनःसख उवाच। न्यायेन वेदानध्येतु गृहस्थोस्तु प्रियातिथिः
Let him be devoid of all righteous acts, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Śunaḥsakha said: Let him study the Vedas lawfully and be a householder who welcomes guests with affection.
सत्यं वदतु वाजस्रं बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। अग्निं जुहोतु विधिवद्यज्ञं यजतु नित्यशः
Let him always speak the truth, whoever has stolen the lotus roots. Let him offer oblations to the fire according to rule and perform sacrifices continually.
ब्रह्मणस्सदनं यातु बिसस्तैन्यं करोति यः। ऋषय ऊचुः। इष्टमेव द्विजातीनां यदिदं शपथीकृतं
Whoever commits the theft of lotus stalks should go to the abode of Brahma. The sages said: This oath taken by the twice-born is indeed proper.
त्वया कृतं बिसस्तैन्यं सर्वेषां नः शुनःसख। शुनःसख उवाच। मया ह्यंतर्हितान्यासन्बिसानीमानि वो द्विजाः
You have committed the theft of lotus stalks, O friend of Śunah, for all of us. Śunahsakha said: Indeed, I concealed these lotus stalks for you, O twice-born.
धर्मं च श्रोतुकामेन जानीध्वं मां च वासवम्। अलोभादक्षयालोका जिता वो मुनिसत्तमाः
Desiring to hear about dharma, know me also as Vāsava. O best of sages, you have conquered worlds by non-greed and imperishable vision.
विमानमधितिष्ठध्वं गच्छामस्त्रिदशालयम्। ततो महर्षयस्ते तु विज्ञायाथ पुरंदरम्
Ascend the celestial vehicle; let us go to the abode of the gods. Then the great sages, having understood, approached Purandara.
ऊचुः पुरंदरं चेदं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदाः। इहागत्य नरो यस्तु मध्यमं पुष्करं विशेत्
They spoke these words to Purandara, skilled in speech: Whoever, having come here, enters the middle Puṣkara as a man—
त्रिरात्रोपोषितो भूत्वा लभेदावश्यकं फलम्। द्वादशवार्षिकीदीक्षा स्मृता यातु वनौकसां
Having fasted for three nights, he attains the desired result. The twelve-year vow is remembered among the dwellers of the forest.
तस्याः फलं समग्रं च लभेदिह न संशयः। नासौ दुर्गतिमाप्नोति स्वगणैः सह मोदते
He attains the complete fruit of that vow here, without doubt. He does not fall into misfortune; he rejoices with his companions.
विरिञ्चिस्थानमासाद्य तिष्ठेद्वै ब्रह्मणो दिनम्। पुलस्त्य उवाच। इंद्रेण सह संप्रीतास्तदा जग्मुस्त्रिविष्टपम्
Having reached the place of Virinci, he remains for a day of Brahma. Pulastya said: Then, together with Indra, they joyfully went to heaven.
