अपत्यैरपि हीनानां नैव दुःखं भविष्यति। गौरी चैव तु गायत्र्या तदा सापि विबोधिता
Even for those deprived of children, there will be no sorrow; and Gauri, awakened by Gayatri at that moment,
बृंहिता परितोषेण वरान्दत्त्वा मनस्विनी। समाप्तिंतस्य यज्ञस्य काञ्क्षन्तीब्रह्मणःप्रिया
Was gladdened with contentment, and, being noble-minded, granted boons; desiring the completion of that sacrifice, the beloved of Brahma,
वरदां तां तथा दृष्ट्वा गायत्रीं वेदमातरम्। प्रणिपत्य तदा रुद्रः स्तुतिमेतां चकार ह
Seeing Gayatri, the mother of the Vedas, as the granter of boons in this way, Rudra then bowed down and offered this praise.
"रुद्र उवाच। नमोस्तु ते वेदमातरष्टाक्षरविशोधिते। गायत्री दुर्गतरणी वाणी सप्तविधा तथा
Rudra said: O mother of the Vedas, purified by the eight syllables, I bow to you; O Gayatri, crosser of difficulties, speech, and also sevenfold in form,
सर्वाणि स्तुतिशास्त्राणि गाथाश्च निखिलास्तथा। अक्षराणि च सर्वाणि लक्षणानि तथैव च
All hymns of praise, all songs, and likewise all syllables and their characteristics,
भाष्यादि सर्वशास्त्राणि ये चान्ये नियमास्तथा। अक्षराणि च सर्वाणि त्वं तु देवि नमोस्तुते
All commentaries and treatises, and whatever other disciplines there are, and all syllables as well—O goddess, I bow to you.
श्वेता त्वं श्वेतरूपासि शशांकेन समानना। बिभ्रती विपुलौ बाहू कदलीगर्भकोमलौ
You are white, of a radiant white form, with a face like the moon; bearing broad arms soft as the core of a plantain stem,
एणश्रृँगं करे गृह्य पंकजं च सुनिर्मलम्। वसाना वसने क्षौमे रक्तेनोत्तरवाससा
Holding a deer’s horn and a spotless lotus in your hand, clad in a fine silk garment with a red upper cloth,
शशिरश्मिप्रकाशेन हारेणोरसि राजिता। दिव्यकुंडलपूर्णाभ्यां कर्णाभ्यां सुविभूषिता
Adorned on your breast with a necklace shining like moonbeams, beautifully decorated with divine earrings in both ears,
चंद्रसापत्न्यभूतेन मुखेन त्वं विराजसे। मकुटेनातिशुद्धेन केशबंधेन शोभिता
With a face rivaling the moon’s radiance, you shine; adorned with a most pure crown and a splendid hair arrangement,
भुजंगाभोगसदृशौ भुजौ ते भूषणन्दिवः। स्तनौ ते रुचिरौ देवि वर्तुलौ समचूचुकौ
Your arms are like the coils of a serpent, adorned with celestial ornaments; your breasts, O goddess, are lovely, round, and with even nipples.
जघनेनातिशुभ्रेण त्रिवलीभंगदर्पिता। सुमध्यवर्त्तिनी नाभिर्गंभीरा शुभदर्शिनी
With a most beautiful waist marked by three folds, you are proud of your shining hips; your navel is deep and pleasing to behold, set in your graceful middle.
विस्तीर्णजघना देवी सुश्रोणी च वरानने। सुजातवृत्तोरुयुगा सुजानु चरणा तथा
O goddess with broad hips, lovely thighs, and beautiful face; your shapely pair of thighs, well-formed knees, and likewise your feet.
त्रैलोक्यधारिणी सा त्वं भुवि सत्योपयाचना। भविष्यसि महाभागे वरदा वरवर्णिनी
You are the sustainer of the three worlds, and on earth, your requests are always fulfilled; O highly fortunate, best-complexioned one, you will be the granter of boons.
पुष्करे च कृता यात्रा दृष्ट्वा त्वां संभविष्यति। ज्येष्ठे मासेपौर्णमास्यामग्र्यांपूजां च लप्स्यसे
Whoever undertakes a pilgrimage to Pushkara and beholds you shall be blessed; in the month of Jyeshtha, on the full moon, you will receive the foremost worship.
ये च वा त्वत्प्रभावज्ञाः पूजयिष्यंति मानवाः। न तेषां दुर्लभं किंचित्पुत्रतो धनतोपि वा
And those humans who, knowing your glory, worship you—nothing will be difficult for them, whether sons or wealth.
कान्तारेषु निमग्नानामटव्यां वा महार्णवे। दस्युभिर्वानिरुद्धानां त्वं गतिः परमा नृणाम्
For those sunk in wildernesses, or in great forests, or in the vast ocean, or restrained by robbers, you are the supreme refuge of men.
त्वं सिद्धिःश्रीर्धृतिः कीर्तिर्ह्रीर्विद्या सन्नतिर्मतिः। संध्या रात्रिःप्रभा निद्रा कालरात्रिस्त्वमेव च
You are accomplishment, fortune, steadfastness, fame, modesty, knowledge, humility, wisdom; you are twilight, night, radiance, sleep, and the night of time.
अंबा च कमला मातुर्ब्रह्माणी ब्रह्मचारिणी। जननी सर्वदेवानां गायत्री परमांगना
You are Ambā and Kamalā, the mother; Brahmāṇī, the celibate; the mother of all the gods, Gāyatrī, the supreme woman.
जया च विजया चैव पुष्टिस्त्वं च क्षमा दया। सावित्र्यवरजा चासि सदा चेष्टा पितामहे
You are victory and triumph, nourishment, patience, compassion; you are always the younger sister of Sāvitrī and the activity of the grandsire.
बहुरूपा विश्वरूपा सुनेत्रा ब्रह्मचारिणी। सुरूपा त्वं विशालाक्षी भक्तानां परिरक्षिणी
Of many forms, of universal form, beautiful-eyed, celibate; you are of lovely form, wide-eyed, the protector of devotees.
नगरेषु च पुण्येषु आश्रमेषु वरानने। वासस्तव महादेवि वनेषूपवनेषु च
In cities and holy places, in hermitages, O noble-faced one, your dwelling, O great goddess, is in forests and groves as well.
ब्रह्मस्थानेषु सर्वेषु ब्रह्मणो वामतः स्थिता। दक्षिणेन तु सावित्री मध्ये ब्रह्मा पितामहः
In all the seats of Brahma, you are situated to the left of Brahma; to the right is Sāvitrī, and in the middle is Brahma, the grandsire.
अंतर्वेदी च यज्ञानामृत्विजां चापि दक्षिणा। सिद्धिस्त्वंहि नृपाणांच वेला सागरजा मता
You are the altar within sacrifices, and the fee for priests; you are accomplishment for kings, and the boundary of the ocean is considered yours.
ब्रह्मचारिणि या दीक्षा शोभा च परमा मता। ज्योतिषांच प्रभा देवीलक्ष्मीर्नारायणे स्थिता
The initiation of the celibate, and the highest splendor are considered yours; you are the radiance of the stars, O goddess, Lakṣmī abiding in Nārāyaṇa.
क्षमा सिद्धिर्मुनीनां च नक्षत्राणां च रोहिणी। राजद्वारेषु तीर्थेषु नदीनां संगमेषु च
You are patience and accomplishment for sages, and Rohiṇī among stars; at royal gates, at holy places, and at the confluences of rivers.
पूर्णिमा पूर्णचंद्रे च बुद्धिर्नीत्यां क्षमा धृतिः। उमादेवी च नारीणां श्रूयसे वरवर्णिनी
You are the full moon on the night of the full moon, wisdom in policy, patience, steadfastness; you are called Umādevī among women, O one of excellent complexion.
इन्द्रस्य चारुदृष्टिस्त्वं सहस्रनयनोपगा। ॠषीणां धर्मबुद्धिस्त्वं देवानां च परायणा
You are the beautiful vision of Indra, accompanying his thousand eyes; you are the righteous mind of sages, and the supreme goal of the gods.
कर्षकाणां च सीता त्वं भूतानां धरणी तथा। स्त्रीणामवैधव्यकरी धनधान्यप्रदा सदा
You are Sītā among farmers, and the earth among beings; you always grant freedom from widowhood to women, and bestow wealth and grain.
व्याधिं मृत्युं भयं चैव पूजिता शमयिष्यसि। तथा तु कार्तिके मासि पौर्णमास्यांसुपूजिता
When worshipped, you will dispel disease, death, and fear; likewise, in the month of Kārtika, on the full moon, you are especially worshipped.
