अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामिसावित्र्या ब्रह्मणा सह। वादो यथानुभूतस्तु परिहासकृतो महान्
Now I shall declare further the debate between Savitri and Brahma, as it was experienced, a great exchange made in jest.
सावित्रीगमने सर्वा-आगता देवयोषितः। भृगोःख्यात्यां समुत्पन्नाविष्णुपत्नी यशस्विनी
When Savitri departed, all the divine women assembled; the renowned wife of Vishnu, born from the fame of Bhrigu, was among them.
आमन्त्रिता सदा लक्ष्मीस्तत्रायाता त्वरान्विता। मदिराच महाभागा योगनिद्रा विभूतिदा
Lakshmi was always invited and arrived there swiftly; Madira, greatly fortunate, and Yoganidra, bestower of prosperity, also came.
श्रीः कमलालयाभूतिः कीर्तिः श्रद्धा मनस्विनी। पुष्टितुष्टिप्रदा या तु देव्या एताः समागताः
Sri, the one dwelling in lotuses, Bhuti, Kirti, Shraddha the wise, Pushti and Tushti the bestowers of nourishment—all these goddesses gathered.
सती या दक्षतनया उमेति पार्वती शुभा। त्रैलोक्यसुन्दरी देवी स्त्रीणां सौभाग्यदायिनी
Sati, daughter of Daksha, known as Uma and Parvati, the auspicious one, the goddess famed for beauty in the three worlds, giver of good fortune to women.
जया च विजया चैव मधुच्छन्दामरावती। सुप्रिया जनकान्ता च सावित्र्या मंदिरे शुभे
Jaya and Vijaya, Madhuchhanda, Amaravati, Supriya, Janakanta—all these entered the auspicious mansion of Savitri.
गौर्या सह समायातास्सुवेषा भरणान्विताः। पुलोमदुहिता चैव शक्राणी च सहाप्सराः
Together with Gauri, adorned and splendidly dressed, Puloma's daughter and Shakra's wife arrived, accompanied by the Apsaras.
स्वाहा चापि स्वधाऽऽयाता धूमोर्णा च वरानना। यक्षी तु राक्षसी चैव गौरी चैव महाधना
Svaha and Svadha came, Dhumorna the beautiful-faced, Yakshi and Rakshasi, and Gauri, possessor of great wealth.
मनोजवा वायुपत्नी ऋद्धिश्च धनदप्रिया। देवकन्यास्तथाऽऽयाता दानव्यो दनुवल्लभाः
Manojava, wife of Vayu, Riddhi beloved of Kubera, and the daughters of the gods arrived, as did the wives of the Danavas and their beloveds.
सप्तर्षीणां महापत्न्य ऋषीणां च वरांगनाः। एवं भगिन्यो दुहिता विद्याधरीगणास्तथा
The great wives of the seven sages, the noble women of the rishis, sisters and daughters, and groups of Vidyadhari maidens likewise.
राक्षस्यः पितृकन्याश्च तथान्या लोकमातरः। वधूभिः सस्नुषाभिश्च सावित्री गन्तुमिच्छति
Rakshasi women, daughters of the Pitris, and other mothers of the worlds, with brides and daughters-in-law, all wished to accompany Savitri.
अदित्याद्यास्तथा सर्वा दक्षकन्यास्समागताः। ताभिः परिवृता साध्वी ब्रह्माणी कमलालया
All the Adityas and Daksha's daughters assembled; surrounded by them, the virtuous Brahmani, dwelling in lotuses, proceeded.
काचिन्मोदकमादाय काचिच्छूर्पं वरानना। फलपूरितमादाय प्रयाता ब्रह्मणोंतिकम्
One took sweetmeats, another a winnowing basket, a beautiful-faced one carried a vessel filled with fruit, and they went toward Brahma.
आढकीः सह निष्पावा गृहीत्वान्यास्तथापरा। दाडिमानि विचित्राणि मातुलिंगानि शोभना
Some took containers with roasted grains, others carried pomegranates and splendid citrons.
करीराणि तथा चान्या गृहीत्वा कमलानि च। कौसुंभकं जीरकं च खर्जूरमपरा तथा
Others took karira fruits and lotuses, kusumbhaka, cumin, and dates as well.
उत्तमान्यपरादाय नालिकेराणि सर्वशः। द्राक्षयापूरितं काचित्पात्रंश्रृँगाटकंतथा
Some brought the finest coconuts, vessels filled with grapes, and also the srngataka fruit.
कर्पूराणि विचित्राणि जंबूकानि शुभानि च। अक्षोटामलकान्गृह्य जम्बीराणि तथापरा
They carried fragrant camphor, auspicious rose-apples, walnuts, amalaki fruits, and others brought lemons.
बिल्वानि परिपक्वानि चिपिटानि वरानना। कार्पासतूलिकाश्चान्या वस्त्रं कौसुम्भकं तथा
Some brought ripe bilva fruits and cipiṭa, beautiful-faced ones carried cotton tufts and garments of kusumbhaka cloth.
एवमाद्यानि चान्यानि कृत्वा शूर्पे वराननाः। सावित्र्यासहिताःसर्वाः संप्राप्ताःसहसाशुभाः
In this way, having performed various other acts with winnowing baskets, all the noble-faced women, together with Sāvitrī, suddenly arrived, auspicious in appearance.
सावित्रीमागतां दृष्ट्वा भीतस्तत्र पुरन्दरः। अधोमुखः स्थितोब्रह्मा किमेषा मांवदिष्यति
Seeing Sāvitrī arrive there, Indra became fearful; Brahmā stood with his head lowered, thinking, 'What will she say to me?'
त्रपान्वितौ विष्णुरुद्रौ सर्वे चान्ये द्विजातयः। सभासदस्तथा भीतास्तथा चान्ये दिवौकसः
Viṣṇu and Rudra, filled with embarrassment, as well as all the other twice-born, the assembly members, and the other gods, were likewise afraid.
पुत्राःपौत्रा भागिनेया मातुला भ्रातरस्तथा। ऋभवो नाम ये देवा देवानामपि देवताः
Sons, grandsons, nephews, maternal uncles, and brothers, and the Ṛbhus—those gods who are even deities among the gods—
वैलक्ष्येवस्थिताः सर्वे सावित्री किं वदिष्यति। ब्रह्मपार्श्वे स्थिता तत्र किंतु वै गोपकन्यका
All stood there in discomfort, wondering, 'What will Sāvitrī say?' She stood by Brahmā's side, but she was, in truth, a cowherd maiden.
मौनीभूता तु शृण्वाना सर्वेषां वदतां गिरः। अद्ध्वर्युणा समाहूता नागता वरवर्णिनी
She became silent, listening to the words of all who spoke; though summoned by the Adhvaryu, the woman of excellent complexion did not come.
शक्रेणान्याहृता-आभीरादत्ता सा विष्णुनास्वयम्। अनुमोदिताचरुद्रेणपित्राऽदत्तास्वयं तथा
Another, brought by Śakra from the Ābhīras, was given to Viṣṇu himself; approved by Rudra, she was also given by her own father.
कथं सा भविता यज्ञे समाप्तिं वा व्रजेत्कथम्। एवं चिंतयतां तेषां प्रविष्टा कमलालया
How would she participate in the sacrifice, or how would it reach completion? As they pondered thus, the Lotus-born entered.
वृतो ब्रह्मासदस्यैस्तु ऋत्विग्भिर्दैवतैस्तथा। हूयंते चाग्नयस्तत्र ब्राह्मणैर्वैदपारगैः
Brahmā was surrounded by assembly members, officiating priests, and gods; there, fires were being offered into by Brāhmaṇas learned in the Vedas.
पत्नीशालास्थिता गोपी सैणश्रृँगा समेखला। क्षौमवस्त्रपरीधाना ध्यायंती परमं पदम्
The cowherd woman stood in the wives' pavilion, adorned with a girdle of sheep's wool, clothed in linen garments, meditating on the supreme state.
पतिव्रता पतिप्राणा प्राधान्ये च निवेशिता। रूपान्विता विशालाक्षी तेजसा भास्करोपमा
Devoted to her husband, her very life centered on him, foremost among the women, endowed with beauty, wide-eyed, and radiant like the sun.
द्योतयन्ती सदस्तत्र सूर्यस्येव यथा प्रभा। ज्वलमानं तथा वह्निं श्रयन्ते ऋत्विजस्तथा
Illuminating the assembly there like the radiance of the sun, she shone, and the officiating priests likewise approached the blazing fire.
