साधर्म्यमानमैश्वर्यं प्रधानं च विधर्मि च। कारणत्वं च ब्रह्मत्वं काम्यत्वमिदमुच्यते
Similarity, lordship, Pradhāna, and difference, causality, Brahmanhood, and desirability—these are said to be so.
प्रयोज्यत्वं प्रधानस्य वैधर्म्यमिदमुच्यते। सर्वत्रकर्तृस्यद्ब्रह्मपुरुषस्याप्यकर्तृता
The capacity to be made use of by Pradhāna is called its difference; everywhere, Brahma-Purusha is the agent, yet also non-agent.
चेतनत्वं प्रधाने च साधर्म्यमिदमुच्यते। तत्वांतरं च तत्वानां कर्मकारणमेव च
Sentience in Pradhāna is called similarity; the distinction among principles and their causes of action as well.
प्रयोजनं च नैयोज्यमैश्वर्यं तत्वसंख्यया। संख्यास्तीत्युच्यते प्राज्ञैर्विनिश्चित्यार्थचिंतकैः
Purpose, non-purpose, lordship—by enumeration of principles; Sāṃkhya is thus declared by the wise, who have determined the meaning.
इति तत्वस्य संभारं तत्वसंख्या च तत्वतः। ब्रह्मतत्वाधिकं चापि श्रुत्वा तत्वं विदुर्बुधाः
Thus is the collection of principles and their enumeration; having heard of the superiority of Brahman-principle, the wise know the truth.
सांख्यकृद्भक्तिरेषा च सद्भिराध्यात्मिकी कृता। योगजामपि भक्तानां शृणु भक्तिं पितामहे
This devotion of the Sāṃkhya-makers is established by the virtuous as spiritual; now hear also the devotion arising from Yoga, O Pitāmaha.
प्राणायामपरो नित्यं ध्यानवान्नियतेंद्रियः। भैक्ष्यभक्षी व्रती वापि सर्वप्रत्याहृतेंद्रियः
One devoted to breath-control, always meditative, with restrained senses, eating alms, observing vows, with all senses withdrawn.
धारणं हृदये कुर्याद्ध्यायमानः प्रजेश्वरम्। हृत्पद्मकर्णिकासीनं रक्तवक्त्रं सुलोचनम्
He should perform concentration in the heart, meditating on the Lord of creatures, seated in the lotus of the heart, with red face and beautiful eyes.
परितो द्योतितमुखं ब्रह्मसूत्रकटीतटम्। चतुर्वक्त्रं चतुर्बाहुं वरदाभयहस्तकम्
His face shines all around, his waist adorned with a Brahma-thread, four-faced, four-armed, with hands granting boons and fearlessness.
योगजा मानसी सिद्धिर्ब्रह्मभक्तिः परा स्मृता। य एवं भक्तिमान्देवे ब्रह्मभक्तः स उच्यते
The perfection arising from Yoga is called supreme devotion to Brahman; whoever possesses such devotion to the deity is called a devotee of Brahman.
वृत्तिं च शृणु राजेंद्र या स्मृता क्षेत्रवासिनाम्। स्वयं देवेन विप्राणां विष्ण्वादीनां समागमे
Hear also, O king, the conduct remembered for those dwelling in sacred places, as declared by the deity himself in the assembly of Brāhmaṇas and Viṣṇu and others.
कथिता विस्तरात्पूर्वं सर्वेषां तत्र सन्निधौ। निर्ममा निरहंकारा निःसंगा निष्परिग्रहाः
It was described in detail previously, in the presence of all; devoid of possessiveness, ego, attachment, and acquisition.
बंधुवर्गे च निःस्नेहास्समलोष्टाश्मकांचनाः। भूतानां कर्मभिर्नित्यैर्विविधैरभयप्रदाः
Without affection among relatives, equal towards clod, stone, and gold; always granting fearlessness to beings through various actions.
प्राणायामपरा नित्यं परध्यानपरायणाः। याजिनः शुचयो नित्यं यतिधर्मपरायणाः
Always devoted to breath-control, absorbed in meditation, engaged in sacrifice, always pure, devoted to the duties of ascetics.
सांख्ययोगविधिज्ञाश्च धर्मज्ञाश्छिन्नसंशयाः। यजंते विधिनानेन ये विप्राः क्षेत्रवासिनः
Those Brāhmaṇas dwelling in sacred places, who know the methods of Sāṃkhya and Yoga, who are learned in dharma and free from doubt, worship with this rite.
अरण्ये पौष्करे तेषां मृतानां सत्फलं शृणु। व्रजंति ते सुदुष्प्रापं ब्रह्मसायुज्यमक्षयम्
Hear now, O Pauṣkara, the excellent fruit for those among them who die in the forest of Puṣkara: they attain the supremely difficult and imperishable union with Brahman.
यत्प्राप्य न पुनर्जन्म लभन्ते मृत्युदायकम्। पुनरावर्तनं हित्वा ब्राह्मीविद्यां समास्थिताः
Having attained that state, they do not obtain rebirth, which brings death; abandoning further return, they abide in the knowledge of Brahman.
पुनरावृत्तिरन्येषां प्रपंचाश्रमवासिनाम्। गार्हस्थ्यविधिमाश्रित्य षट्कर्मनिरतः सदा
But for others, who dwell in the world and its stages of life, there is return again; always devoted to the six duties, following the householder's rule.
जुहोति विधिना सम्यङ्मंत्रैर्यज्ञे निमंत्रितः। अधिकं फलमाप्नोति सर्वदुःखविवर्जितः
He who, duly invited to a sacrifice, offers oblations properly with mantras according to the rite, obtains a greater fruit, free from all suffering.
सर्वलोकेषु चाप्यस्य गतिर्न प्रतिहन्यते। दिव्येनैश्वर्ययोगेन स्वारूढः सपरिग्रहः२०० 1.15.
And in all worlds, his path is never hindered; endowed with divine power and prosperity, he ascends with his companions.
बालसूर्यप्रकाशेन विमानेन सुवर्चसा। वृतः स्त्रीणां सहस्रैस्तु स्वंच्छदगमनालयः
Surrounded by thousands of women, he moves at will in a radiant celestial chariot shining like the young sun.
विचरत्यनिवार्येण सर्वलोकान्यदृच्छया। स्पृहणीयतमः पुंसां सर्वधर्मोत्तमो धनी
He wanders freely through all worlds as he wishes, irresistible; most enviable among men, supreme in all virtues, and wealthy.
स्वर्गच्युतः प्रजायेत कुले महति रूपवान्। धर्मज्ञो धर्मभक्तश्च सर्वविद्यार्थपारगः
Falling from heaven, he is born in a great family, handsome, learned in dharma, devoted to righteousness, and accomplished in all branches of knowledge.
तथैव ब्रह्मचर्येण गुरुशुश्रूषणेन च। वेदाध्ययनसंयुक्तो भैक्ष्यवृतिर्जितेन्द्रियः
Likewise, through celibacy, service to the teacher, study of the Vedas, living by alms, and self-control, he is endowed.
नित्यं सत्यव्रते युक्तः स्वधर्मेष्वप्रमादवान्। सर्वकामसमृद्धेन सर्वकामावलंबिना
Always steadfast in truth, diligent in his own duties, possessing all desired enjoyments, and relying on all desires fulfilled.
सूर्येणेव द्वितीयेन विमानेनानिवारितः। गुह्यकानामब्रह्माख्य गणाः परमसंमताः
Like a second sun, he moves unhindered in a celestial chariot; the hosts of Guhyakas, not called Brahman, hold him in highest esteem.
अप्रमेयबलैश्वर्या देवदानवपूजिताः। तेषां स समता याति तुल्यैश्वर्यसमन्वितः
Possessed of immeasurable strength and power, worshipped by gods and Dānavas, he attains equality with them, endowed with equal sovereignty.
देवदानवमर्त्येषु भवत्यनियतायुधः। वर्षकोटिसहस्राणि वर्षकोटिशतानि च
Among gods, Dānavas, and mortals, he is unconquerable in battle for thousands of millions and hundreds of millions of years.
एवमैश्वर्यसंयुक्तो विष्णुलोके महीयते। उषित्वाऽसौ विभूत्यैवं यदा प्रच्यवते पुनः
Thus endowed with sovereignty, he is honored in the world of Viṣṇu; having dwelt there in glory, when he falls again—
विष्णुलोकात्स्वकृत्येन स्वर्गस्थानेषु जायते
From the world of Viṣṇu, by his own actions, he is born in the abodes of heaven.
