यज्ञं चकार विधिना धिषणोध्वर्युसत्तमः। पद्मं कृत्वा मृणालाढ्यं पद्मदीक्षाप्रयोगतः
The excellent priest, Dhiṣaṇa, performed the sacrifice according to the rite; making a lotus altar rich with lotus stalks, as prescribed for the lotus initiation.
अनुजग्राह देवांस्तान्सुरेच्छा प्रेरितो मुनिः। तेभ्यो ददौ विवेकिभ्यः स वेदोक्तावधानवित्
The sage, prompted by the gods' wish, accepted them; he gave to those discerning ones the knowledge according to the Vedic instructions.
दीक्षां वै विस्मयं त्यक्त्वा बृहस्पतिरुदारधीः। एकमग्निं च संस्कृत्य महात्मा त्रिदिवौकसाम्
Brhaspati, noble-minded, abandoned astonishment at the initiation; preparing a single fire, the great soul for the dwellers of heaven,
प्रादादांगिरसस्तुष्टो जाप्यं वेदोदितं तु यत्। त्रिसुपर्णं त्रिमधु च पावमानीं च पावनीम्
Angiras, pleased, gave them the recitation prescribed in the Vedas: the Trisuparna, Trimadhu, and the purifying Pavamani hymns.
स हि जाप्यादिकं सर्वमशिक्षयदुदारधीः। आपो हिष्ठेति यत्स्नानं ब्राह्मं तत्परिपठ्यते
He, of noble intellect, taught them all the recitations and related practices; the bath accompanied by the recitation 'āpo hiṣṭha' is known as the Brahma bath.
पापघ्नं दुष्टशमनं पुष्टिश्रीबलवर्द्धनम्। सिद्धिदं कीर्तिदं चैव कलिकल्मषनाशनम्
It destroys sin, pacifies the wicked, increases nourishment, prosperity, and strength; it grants success, fame, and removes the impurities of the Kali age.
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन ब्राह्मस्नानं समाचरेत्। कुर्वंतो मौनिनो दांता दीक्षिताः क्षपितेंद्रियाः
Therefore, one should perform the Brahma bath with all effort, as do those who are silent, self-restrained, initiated, and have subdued their senses.
सर्वे कमंडलुयुता मुक्तकक्षाक्षमालिनः। दंडिनश्चीरवस्त्राश्च जटाभिरतिशोभिताः
All carry water pots, wear loose garments and rosaries, are staff-bearers, clad in bark cloth, and adorned with matted hair.
स्नानाचारासनरताः प्रयत्नध्यानधारिणः। मनो ब्रह्मणि संयोज्य नियताहारकांक्षिणः
Engaged in the practice of bathing, seated in proper posture, devoted to meditation with effort, fixing their minds on Brahman, and desiring regulated food.
अतिष्ठन्दर्शनालापसंगध्यानविवर्जिताः। एवं व्रतधराः सर्वे त्रिकालं स्नानकारिणः
Observing silence, avoiding sight, speech, contact, and meditation on other things, thus all the vow-holders perform bathing three times a day.
भक्त्या परमया युक्ता विधिना परमेण च। कालेन महता ध्यानाद्देवज्ञानमनोगताः
Endowed with supreme devotion and following the highest procedure, in due time, through meditation, their minds attained divine knowledge.
ब्रह्मध्यानाग्निनिर्दग्धा यदा शुद्धैकमानसाः। अविर्बभूव भगवान्सर्वेषां दृष्टिगोचरः
When their minds became purified and single-pointed, burned by the fire of meditation on Brahman, the Blessed Lord appeared, visible to all.
तेजसाप्यायितास्तस्य बभूवुर्भ्रांतचेतसः। ततोवलंब्य ते धैर्यमिष्टं देवं यथाविधि
Filled with his radiance, their minds became bewildered; relying on that, they steadied themselves and worshipped the desired Lord as prescribed.
षडंगवेदयोगेन हृष्टचित्तास्तु तत्पराः। शिरोगतैरंजलिभिः शिरोभिश्च महीं गताः
With the six-limbed Veda as their means, their hearts rejoicing and intent, with hands joined on their heads and their heads touching the ground.
तुष्टुवुः सृष्टिकर्त्तारं स्थितिकर्तारमीश्वरम्। देवा ऊचुः। ब्रह्मणे ब्रह्मदेहाय ब्रह्मण्यायाऽजिताय च
They praised the Lord, the creator and sustainer of the universe. The gods said: To Brahma, who has the body of Brahman, who is devoted to Brahman and unconquered.
नमस्कुर्मः सुनियताः क्रतुवेदप्रदायिने। लोकानुकंपिने देव सृष्टिरूपाय वै नमः
We bow with perfect discipline to the giver of sacrificial knowledge; O Lord, who moves with compassion for the worlds, who is the very form of creation, we bow to you.
भक्तानुकंपिनेत्यर्थं वेदजाप्यस्तुताय च। बहुरूपस्वरूपाय रूपाणां शतधारिणे
To the one who is compassionate to devotees, praised by Vedic recitation and hymns, who has many forms and the true form, who bears a hundred shapes.
सावित्रीपतये देव गायत्रीपतये नमः। पद्मासनाय पद्माय पद्मवक्त्राय ते नमः
To the Lord of Sāvitrī, to the Lord of Gāyatrī, we bow; to the one seated on a lotus, to Padmā, to you with a lotus face, we bow.
वरदाय वरार्हाय कूर्माय च मृगाय च। जटामकुटयुक्ताय स्रुवस्रुचनिधारिणे
To the giver of boons, the worthy of boons, to the Tortoise and the Deer; to you adorned with matted locks and crown, bearer of ladle and sacrificial spoon.
मृगांकमृगधर्माय धर्मनेत्राय ते नमः। विश्वनाम्नेऽथ विश्वाय विश्वेशाय नमोनमः
To you who have the deer-mark and the nature of a deer, who have righteousness as your eye, to you named Viśva, to Viśva, to the Lord of the universe, repeated salutations.
धर्मनेत्रत्राणमस्मादधिकं कर्तुमर्हसि। वाङ्मनःकायभावैस्त्वां प्रपन्नास्स्मः पितामह
You should grant us the protection of righteousness beyond compare; with our words, minds, and bodies, we have taken refuge in you, O Grandfather.
एवं स्तुतस्तदा देवैर्ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मविदां वरः। प्रदास्यामि स्मृतो बाढममोघं दर्शनं हि वः
Thus praised by the gods at that time, Brahmā, the best of knowers of Brahman, said: 'Indeed, I will grant you the vision you desire, unfailing as it is.'
ब्रुवंतु वांछितं पुत्राः प्रदास्यामि वरान्वरान्। एवमुक्ता भगवता देवा वचनमब्रुवन्
Speak, O sons, whatever you desire; I shall grant you boon after boon. Thus addressed by the Blessed One, the gods spoke these words.
एष एवाद्य भगवन्सुपर्याप्तो महान्वरः। जनितो नः सुशब्दोयं कमलं क्षिपता त्वया
O Blessed One, this very boon is now most sufficient and great for us; this lotus, which you have cast, has been named by us with an auspicious sound.
किमर्थं कंपिता भूमिर्लोकाश्चाकुलिताः कृताः। नैतन्निरर्थकं देव उच्यतामत्र कारणम्
For what reason has the earth trembled and the worlds been disturbed? This cannot be without cause, O god; let the reason for this be spoken.
ब्रह्मोवाच। युष्मद्धितार्थमेतद्वै पद्मं विनिहितं मया। देवतानां च रक्षार्थं श्रूयतामत्र कारणम्
Brahma said: For your welfare, indeed, I have placed this lotus; and for the protection of the gods as well. Hear now the reason for this.
असुरो वज्रनाभोऽयं बालजीवापहारकः। अवस्थितस्त्ववष्टभ्य रसातलतलाश्रयम्
This demon Vajranabha, who steals the lives of children, has taken up his position, seizing the lowest region of the underworld.
युष्मदागमनं ज्ञात्वा तपस्थान्निहितायुधान्। हंतुकामो दुराचारः सेंद्रानपि दिवौकसः
Knowing of your coming, that wicked one, armed and engaged in austerities, desires to slay even the gods along with Indra.
घातः कमलपातेन मया तस्य विनिर्मितः। स राज्यैश्वर्यदर्पिष्टस्तेनासौ निहतो मया
His destruction was accomplished by me through the dropping of the lotus; proud of his kingdom and power, he was thus slain by me.
लोकेऽस्मिन्समये भक्ता ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः। मैव ते दुर्गतिं यांतु लभंतां सुगतिं पुनः
May the devoted Brahmins, learned in the Vedas, at this time in the world, never fall into misfortune but attain good fortune again.
