प्रजेशत्वं धनेशत्वमवध्यत्वं च वै ददौ। एतान्लब्ध्वा वरान्काव्यः संप्रहृष्टतनूरुहः
He granted lordship over creatures, lordship over wealth, and invincibility. Having obtained these boons, Kāvya was filled with joy.
एवमाभाष्य देवेशमीश्वरं नीललोहितम्। प्रज्ञान्वितस्ततस्तस्मै प्राञ्जलि प्रणतो ऽभवत्
Having thus addressed the lord of the gods, the blue-red Lord, he, endowed with wisdom, then stood before him with joined palms, bowing.
ततः सोंऽतर्हिते देवे जयंतीमिदमब्रवीत्। कस्य त्वं सुभगे का वा दुःखिते मयि दुःखिता
Then, when the god had vanished, he spoke to Jayanti: 'Who are you, O fortunate one? Why are you sorrowful when I am sorrowful?'
महता तपसा युक्ता किमर्थं मां जिगीषसि। अनया संस्थिता भक्त्या प्रश्रयेण दमेन च
'Endowed with great austerity, for what purpose do you seek to conquer me? Standing here with devotion, humility, and self-restraint,'
स्नेहेन चैव सुश्रोणि प्रीतोस्मि वरवर्णिनि। किमिच्छसि वरारोहे कस्ते कामः समुद्यतः
'And with affection, O beautiful-hipped, I am pleased with you, O fair-complexioned one. What do you desire, O lovely one? What wish have you raised?'
तं ते संपादयाम्यद्य यद्यपि स्यात्सुदुष्करम्। एवमुक्ताब्रवीदेनं तपसा ज्ञातुमर्हसि
'I will fulfill it for you today, even if it is very difficult.' Thus addressed, she replied to him: 'Through austerity, you ought to know.'
चिकीर्षितं हि मे ब्रह्मंस्त्वं वै वद यथातथम्। एवमुक्तोब्रवीदेनं दृष्ट्वा दिव्येन चक्षुषा
'Indeed, I wish to accomplish something, O Brahman. You must tell me truly.' Thus addressed, he replied to her, seeing with divine sight:
मया सह त्वं सुश्रोणि शतवर्षाणि भामिनि। सर्वभूतैरदृश्यांतः संप्रयोगमिहेच्छसि
'With me, O beautiful-hipped, O radiant one, you wish to unite here for a hundred years, unseen by all beings.'
देवि इंदीवरश्यामे वरार्हे वामलोचने। एवं वृणोषि कामांस्त्वं ददे वै वल्गुभाषिते
'O goddess, dark as a blue lotus, worthy of boons, with lovely eyes, thus you choose your desires. I grant them to you, O sweet-spoken one.'
एवं भवतु गच्छाव गृहं मे मत्तकाशिनि। ततः स गृहमागम्य जयंत्या सह चोशना
'So be it. Let us go to my house, O intoxicated one.' Then he went home together with Jayanti and Ushanas.
तया सहावसद्देव्या शतवर्षाणि भार्गवः। अदृश्यः सर्वभूतानां मायया संशितव्रतः
With that goddess, Bhargava dwelt for a hundred years, invisible to all beings, through his vow and magical power.
कृतार्थमागतं ज्ञात्वा शुक्रं सर्वे दितेस्सुताः। अभिजग्मुर्गृहं तस्य मुदितास्ते दिदृक्षवः
Knowing that Shukra had accomplished his purpose and returned, all the sons of Diti joyfully came to his house, eager to see him.
गता यदा न पश्यंति मायया संवृतं गुरुम्। लक्षणं तस्य चाबुद्ध्वा नाद्यागच्छति नो गुरुः
When they arrived, they could not see their teacher, concealed by magic. Not recognizing his signs, they said, 'Our teacher has not come today.'
एवं ते स्वानि धिष्ण्यानि गताः सर्वे यथागताः। ततो देवगणास्सर्वे गत्वांगिरसमब्रुवन्
Thus, all of them went to their own seats as they had come. Then all the hosts of gods went and spoke to Angiras.
दानवालये तु भगवान्गत्वा तत्र च तां चमूम्। मोहयित्वात्मवशगां क्षिप्रमेव तथा कुरु
O Lord, go to the abode of the Dānavas and there, quickly bewilder their army, making them subject to your will—do this at once.
धिषणस्तान्सुरानाह एवमेव व्रजाम्यहम्। तेन गत्वा दानवेंद्रः प्रह्लादो वै वशीकृतः
Dhiṣaṇa then said to the gods: 'In this very way, I shall go.' Having gone, Prahlāda, the lord of the Dānavas, was brought under control.
शुक्रो भूत्वा स्थितस्तत्र पौरोहित्यं चकार सः। स्थितो वर्षशतं साग्रमुशना तावदागतः
Assuming the form of Śukra, he remained there and performed the duties of priest; for over a hundred years, Uśanā stayed, until he returned.
दनुपुत्रैस्ततो दृष्टः सभायां तु बृहस्पतिः। उशना एक एवात्र द्वितीयः किमिहागतः
Then, in the assembly, the sons of Danu saw Bṛhaspati and said: 'Here is Uśanā, but who is this second one, and why has he come here?'
सुमहत्कौतुकं चात्र भविता विग्रहो दृढम्। किं वदिष्यति लोकोयं द्वारि योयं व्यवस्थितः
A great curiosity arose there, and a firm conflict was imminent. 'What will people say about this one who stands at the door?'
सभायामास्थितो योयं गुरुः किं नो वदिष्यति। एवं प्रजल्पतां तेषां दनूनां कविरागतः
'This guru who sits in the assembly—what will he say to us?' While the Dānavas were thus talking among themselves, the sage arrived.
स्वरूपधारिणं तत्र दृष्ट्वासीनं बृहस्पतिम्। उवाच वचनं क्रुद्धः किमर्थं त्वमिहागतः
Seeing Bṛhaspati seated there in his own form, he spoke angrily: 'For what purpose have you come here?'
शिष्यान्मोहयसे मे त्वं युक्तं सुरगुरोस्तव। मूढास्ते त्वां न जानंति त्वन्मायामोहिता ध्रुवम्
'You are bewildering my disciples; this is fitting for you, O guru of the gods. Surely, they do not recognize you, deluded by your magic.'
तन्न युक्तं तव ब्रह्मन्परशिष्यप्रधर्षणम्। व्रज त्वं देवलोकं स्वं तिष्ठ धर्ममवाप्स्यसि
'It is not proper for you, O Brāhmaṇa, to harass another's disciples. Go to your own world of the gods; remain there and you will attain righteousness.'
शिष्यो हि मे कचः पूर्वं हतो दानवपुंगवैः। विद्यार्थी तनयो ब्रह्मंस्तवायोग्या गतिस्त्विह
'Formerly, my disciple Kaca was killed by the foremost of the Dānavas. He was a seeker of knowledge, your son, O Brāhmaṇa; your presence here is not appropriate.'
श्रुत्वा तु तस्य तद्वाक्यं स्मितं कृत्वावदद्गुरुः। संति चोराः पृथिव्यां येपरद्रव्यापहारिणः
Hearing these words, the guru smiled and said: 'There are thieves on earth who steal the property of others.'
एवं विधानदृष्टाश्च रूपदेहापहारिणः। वृत्रघातेन चेंद्रस्य ब्रह्महहत्या पुराभवत्
'In the same way, there are those who steal forms and bodies. When Indra slew Vṛtra, he incurred the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa.'
लोकायतिक शास्त्रेण भवता सा तिरस्कृता। जानामि त्वामांगिरसं देवाचार्यं बृहस्पतिम्
'By your materialistic doctrine, she (the sin) was concealed. I know you, O son of Aṅgiras, Bṛhaspati, the teacher of the gods.'
मद्रूपधारिणं प्राप्तं सर्वे पश्यत दानवाः। एष वो मोहनायालं प्राप्तो विष्णुविचेष्टितैः
'He has come here assuming my form—see, all you Dānavas! He has come only to bewilder you, by the contrivance of Viṣṇu.'
तदेनं शृंखलैर्बद्ध्वा क्षिपेत लवणार्णवे। पुनरेवाब्रवीच्छुक्रः पुरोधायं दिवौकसाम्
'Therefore, bind him with chains and cast him into the salt ocean.' Again Śukra spoke to the priest of the gods:
मोहितानूनमेतेन क्षयं यास्यथ दानवाः। भो अहं दानवेंद्रेह वंचितोऽस्मि दुरात्मना
'Surely, by him you have been deluded, and you Dānavas will meet your destruction. O lord of the Dānavas, I have been deceived here by this wicked one.'
