गतेषु सुरसंघेषु विष्णुरिंद्रमभाषत। विष्णुरुवाच। मां त्वं प्रविश भद्रं ते रक्षिष्ये त्वां सुरोत्तम
When the host of gods had departed, Vishnu spoke to Indra: 'Vishnu said: Enter into me, may good befall you; I will protect you, O best of gods.'
एवमुक्तस्ततो विष्णुं प्रविवेश पुरंदरः। विष्णुसंरक्षितं दृष्ट्वा देवी क्रुद्धा वचोऽब्रवीत्
Thus addressed, Purandara entered into Vishnu; seeing Indra protected by Vishnu, the goddess, enraged, spoke these words:
एष त्वां विष्णुना सार्धं दहामि मघवन्बलात्। मिषतां सर्वभूतानां दृश्यतां मे तपोबलम्
'I will burn you together with Vishnu by force, O Maghavan, before the eyes of all beings; let my ascetic power be seen.'
तयाभिभूतौ तौ देवाविंद्रविष्णू बभूवतुः। कथं मुच्येय सहितो विष्णुरिंद्रमभाषत
Overpowered by her, those two gods, Indra and Vishnu, were subdued; Vishnu said to Indra, 'How can I be freed together with you?'
इंद्रोब्रवीज्जहि ह्येनां यावन्नौ न दहेत्प्रभो। विशेषेणाभिभूतोस्मि जहीमां जहि मा चिरम्
Indra said: 'Strike her down before she burns us, O Lord; I am especially overpowered—strike her, strike her without delay.'
ततः समीक्ष्य विष्णुस्तांस्त्रीवधे कृच्छ्रमास्थितः। अभिध्याय ततः शक्रमापन्नं सत्वरं प्रभुः
Then, observing her, Vishnu found it difficult to kill a woman; but reflecting, the Lord swiftly entered into Shakra, who was in danger.
ततः स त्वरयायुक्तः शीघ्रकारी भयान्वितः। ज्ञात्वा विष्णुस्ततस्तस्याः क्रूरं देव्याश्चिकीर्षितम्
Then, filled with urgency, acting quickly and in fear, Vishnu realized the cruel intent of the goddess.
क्रुद्धश्च चक्रमादाय शिरश्चिच्छेद वै भयात्। तं दृष्ट्वा स्त्रीवधं घोरं चुक्रोध भृगुरीश्वरः
Angry, he seized his discus and, out of fear, cut off her head; seeing that terrible act of killing a woman, Bhrigu, the lord, became enraged.
ततो हि शप्तो भृगुणा विष्णुर्भार्यावधे कृते। भृगुरुवाच। यत्त्वया जानता धर्ममवध्या स्त्री निषूदिता
Then, when Vishnu had killed his wife and was cursed by Bhrigu, Bhrigu said: 'Though you knew the law, you killed a woman who should not be slain.'
तस्मात्त्वं सप्तकृत्वो हि मानुषेषूपयास्यसि। ततस्तेनाभिशापेन नष्टे धर्मे पुनःपुनः
Therefore, by this curse, you shall be born among humans seven times; and whenever righteousness is lost, you will return again and again.
लोकस्य च हितार्थाय जायते मानुषेष्विह। अथ व्याहृत्य विष्णुं स तदादाय शिरः स्वयम्
And for the welfare of the world, you will be born among humans here; then, having spoken thus to Vishnu, he took up her head himself.
समानीय ततः कायं पाणौ गृह्येदमब्रवीत्। भृगुरुवाच। एषा त्वं विष्णुना देवि हता संजीवयाम्यहं
Bringing the body together, he took it in his hand and said: 'O goddess, though you were slain by Vishnu, I shall restore you to life.'
यदि कृत्स्नो मया धर्मो ज्ञायते चरितोपि वा। तेन सत्येन जीवस्व यदि सत्यं ब्रवीम्यहम्
'If I truly know the whole of righteousness, or have practiced it, then by that truth, live again—if what I say is true.'
ततस्तां प्रोक्ष्य शीताद्भिर्जीवजीवेति सोब्रवीत्। ततोभिव्याहृते तस्मिन्देवी संजीविता तदा२५० 1.13.
Then, sprinkling her with cold water, he said, 'Live!' And when he had spoken thus, the goddess was revived at that moment.
ततस्तां सर्वभूतानि दृष्ट्वा सुप्तोत्थितामिव। साधुसाध्विति दृष्ट्वैव वचस्तां सर्वतोब्रुवन्
Then, when all beings saw her as if awakened from sleep, they exclaimed from all sides, 'Well done! Well done!'
एवं प्रत्याहृता तेन देवी सा भृगुणा तदा। मिषतां दैवतानां हि तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Thus, at that time, the goddess was restored by Bhrigu; and in the sight of the gods, it appeared as something wondrous.
असंभ्रांतेन भृगुणा पत्नी संजीविता पुनः। दृष्ट्वा चेंद्रो नालभत शर्म काव्यभयात्पुनः
Without agitation, Bhrigu revived his wife once more; and seeing this, Indra found no peace, fearing Kavi again.
प्रजागरे ततश्चेंद्रो जयंतीमिदमब्रवीत्। संधिकामोभ्यधाद्वाक्यं स्वां कन्यां पाकशासनः
Then, remaining awake, Indra spoke to Jayanti: the lord of the gods addressed his own daughter with these words.
इन्द्र उवाच। एष काव्यो ह्यनिंद्राय व्रतं चरति दारुणम्। तेनाहं व्याकुलः पुत्रि कृतो मतिमता दृढम्
Indra said: 'This Kavi is performing a terrible vow for the sake of casting me down; because of this, my wise daughter, I am greatly troubled.'
तैस्तैर्मनोनुकूलैश्च उपचारैरतंद्रिता। आराधय तथा पुत्रि यथा तुष्येत स द्विजः
'With all manner of pleasing attentions, serve him tirelessly, my daughter, so that the Brahmin may be satisfied.'
गच्छ त्वं तस्य दत्तासि प्रयत्नं कुरु मत्कृते। एवमुक्ता जयंती सा वचः संगृह्य वै पितुः
'Go, you are given to him; make every effort for my sake.' Thus addressed, Jayanti accepted her father's words.
अगच्छद्यत्र घोरं स तपो ह्यारभ्य तिष्ठति। तं दृष्ट्वा च पिबंतं सा कणधूममधोमुखम्
She went to where he was engaged in fierce austerity; seeing him drinking only smoke, his face turned downward,
यक्षेण पात्यमानं च कुंडधारेण पावनम्। दृष्ट्वा तं यतमानं तु देवी काव्यमवस्थितम्
And seeing him being purified by a stream poured by a Yaksha, the goddess saw Kavi steadfast in his practice.
शत्रूपघाते श्राम्यंन्तं दुर्बलस्थितिमास्थितम्। पित्रा यथोक्तं वाक्यं सा काव्ये कृतवती तदा
Exhausted by the destruction of enemies, he remained in a weakened state; then, as her father had instructed, she acted toward Kavi.
गीर्भिश्चैवानुकूलाभिः स्तुवंती वल्गुभाषिणी। गात्रसंवाहनैः काले सेवमाना त्वचः सुखैः
Praising him with gentle and pleasing words, speaking sweetly, she served him at the proper times with soothing massages.
व्रतचर्यानुकूलाभिरुपास्य बहुलाः समाः। पूर्णे धूमव्रते तस्मिन्घोरे वर्षसहस्रके
Attending him for many years with services suited to his vow, when that dreadful thousand-year vow of smoke was completed,
वरेण छंदयामास शिवः प्रीतोभवत्तदा। महेश्वर उवाच। एतद्व्रतं त्वयैकेन चीर्णं नान्येन केनचित्
Shiva, pleased at that time, offered a boon and spoke: 'This vow has been performed by you alone, not by anyone else.'
तस्माद्वै तपसा बुद्ध्या श्रुतेन च बलेन च। तेजसा च सुरान्सर्वांस्त्वमेकोभिभविष्यसि
Therefore, by your austerity, intelligence, learning, strength, and brilliance, you alone will surpass all the gods.
यच्च किंचिन्मयि ब्रह्मन्विद्यते भृगुनंदन। प्रतिदास्यामि तत्सर्वं त्वया वाच्यं न कस्यचित्
Whatever exists in me, O Brahman, son of Bhrigu, I will grant all of it to you; you must not reveal it to anyone.
किं भाषितेन बहुना अवध्यस्त्वं भविष्यसि। तान्दत्वा तु वरांस्तस्मै भार्गवाय पुनः पुनः
What need is there for many words? You will become invincible. Having given those boons again and again to Bhargava,
