देवकार्यकरश्चैव सर्वदानवसूदनः। अवध्याश्चापि शक्रस्य दानवा येन घातिताः
He accomplished the work of the gods and was the destroyer of all Dānavas; even those invulnerable to Śakra were slain by him.
स्थापितस्स तु शक्रेण लब्धवर्चास्त्रिविष्टपे। माद्रवत्यां तु जनितावश्विनाविति नः श्रुतम्
He was established by Śakra, gaining glory in heaven; and it is said that the Aśvins were born from Mādravatī.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च रूपसत्वगुणान्वितौ। रोहिणी पौरवी नाम भार्या चानकदुंदुभेः
Nakula and Sahadeva, endowed with beauty, strength, and virtue; Rohinī, also called Pauravī, was the wife of Anakadundubhi.
लेभे चेष्टं सुतं रामं सारणं च रणप्रियम्। दुर्धरं दमनं चैव पिंडारकमहाहनुं
She bore the sons Ceṣṭa, Rāma, Sāraṇa who delights in battle, Durdhara, Damana, Piṇḍāraka, and Mahāhanu.
अथ मायात्वमावास्या देवकी या भविष्यति। तस्यां जज्ञे महाबाहुः पूर्वं तु स प्रजापतिः
Then Māyā, who will become Devakī on the new moon, in her was born the mighty-armed one, who was formerly the Lord of Creatures.
अनुजाताभवत्कृष्णा सुभद्रा भद्रभाषिणी। विजयो रोचमानस्तु वर्धमानश्च देवलः
His younger sister was born, Kṛṣṇā, called Subhadrā, who speaks auspiciously; also Vijaya, Rocamāna, Vardhamāna, and Devala.
एते सर्वे महात्मान उपदेव्यां प्रजज्ञिरे। अगावहं महात्मानं बृहद्देवी व्यजायत
All these great souls were born from Upadevī; and Bṛhaddevī gave birth to the great-souled Agāvaha.
बृहद्देव्यां स्वयं जज्ञे मन्दको नाम नामतः। सप्तमं देवकी पुत्रं रेमंतं सषुवे सुतम्
From Bṛhaddevī herself was born one named Mandaka; Devakī bore her seventh son, Remaṃta.
गवेषणं महाभागं संग्रामेष्वपराजितम्। श्रुतदेव्या विहारे तु वने विचरता पुरा
Gaveṣaṇa, greatly fortunate and undefeated in battle, was once wandering in the forest for pleasure with Śrutadevī.
वैश्यायां समधाच्छौरिः पुत्रं कौशिकमग्रजम्। श्रुतंधरा तु राज्ञी तु सौरगंधपरिग्रहः
From a Vaiśya woman, Śauri begot a son, Kauśika, the eldest; and Śrutaṃdharā, a queen, accepted Sauragandha.
पुत्रं च कपिलं चैव वसुदेवात्मजो बली। जनानां च विषादोभूत्प्रथमः स धनुर्द्धरः
A son named Kapila, strong, was born to Vasudeva; among men, Dhanurddhara was the first to be born, bringing joy.
सौभद्रश्चाभवश्चैव महासत्वौ बभूवतुः। देवभागसुतश्चापि प्रस्तावः स बुधः स्मृतः
Saubhadra and Abhava, both of great strength, were born; and Devabhāga's son, Prastāva, known as Budha.
पण्डितं प्रथमं बाहु देवश्रवसमुत्तमम्। इक्ष्वाकुकुलतो यस्य मनस्विन्या यशस्विनी
The first was Paṇḍita, then Bāhu, and the excellent Devaśravas; from the Ikṣvāku line, his wife was Manasvinī, renowned.
निवृत्तशत्रुः शत्रुघ्नः श्रद्धा तस्मादजायत। गंडूषायामपत्यानि कृष्णस्तुष्टः शतं ददौ
Nivṛttaśatru, also called Śatrughna, was born from Śraddhā; to Gaṇḍūṣā, Kṛṣṇa, being pleased, gave a hundred offspring.
स चंद्रं तु महाभागं वीर्यवंतं महाबलम्। रंतिपालश्च रंतिश्च नंदनस्य सुतावुभौ
He gave Candra, greatly fortunate, powerful and mighty; Rantipāla and Ranti, both sons of Nandana.
शमीकपुत्राश्चत्वारो विक्रांताः सुमहाबलाः। विरजश्च धनुश्चैव व्योमस्तस्य स सृंजयः
There were four sons of Śamīka, valiant and of great strength: Viraja, Dhanu, Vyoma, and Sṛṃjaya.
अनपत्योभवद्व्योमः सृंजयस्य धनंजयः। यो जायमानो भोजत्वं राजर्षित्वमवाप्तवान्
Vyoma was without offspring; Sṛṃjaya's son was Dhanaṃjaya, who, being born, attained the sovereignty of the Bhojas and the status of a royal sage.
कृष्णस्य जन्माभ्युदयं यः कीर्तयति नित्यशः। शृणोति वा नरो नित्यं सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
Whoever always recites or hears the glorious birth of Kṛṣṇa is freed from all sins.
अथ देवो महादेवः पूर्वं कृष्णः प्रजापतिः। विहारार्थं स देवोसौ मानुषेष्वप्यजायत
Then the god Mahādeva, who was formerly Kṛṣṇa, the Lord of Creatures, for the sake of sport, was also born among men.
देवक्यां वसुदेवेन तपसा पुष्करेक्षणः। चतुर्बाहुस्तु संजातो दिव्यरूपो जनाश्रयः
In Devakī, by Vasudeva through austerity, the lotus-eyed one was born with four arms, of divine form, the refuge of people.
श्रीवत्सलक्षणं देवं दृष्ट्वा देवैः सलक्षणम्। उवाच वसुदेवस्तं रूपं संहर वै प्रभो
Seeing the Lord marked with Śrīvatsa, together with the gods and their marks, Vasudeva said to him, 'Withdraw this form, O Lord.'
भीतोहं देव कंसस्य ततस्त्वेतद्ब्रवीमि ते। मम पुत्रा हतास्तेन श्रेष्ठाः षड्भीमविक्रमाः
I am afraid, O Lord, of Kaṃsa; therefore I say this to you. My sons, the six foremost and mighty ones, have been slain by him.
वसुदेववचः श्रुत्वा रूपं संहरदच्युतः। अनुज्ञाप्य तु तं शौरिर्नन्दगोपगृहेनयत्
Hearing Vasudeva's words, Acyuta withdrew his form. Having obtained his permission, Śauri took him to the house of Nandagopa.
दत्वा तं नंदगोपाय रक्ष्यतामिति चाब्रवीत्। अतस्तुसर्वकल्याणं यादवानां भविष्यति
Giving him to Nandagopa, he said, 'Let him be protected.' Therefore, all auspiciousness will come to the Yadavas.
अयं तु गर्भो देवक्या यावत्कंसं हनिष्यति। तावत्पृथिव्यां भविता क्षेमो भारावहः परम्
This child of Devakī will destroy Kaṃsa; until then, the earth will have supreme relief from its burden.
ये वै दुष्टास्तु राजानस्तांस्तु सर्वान्हनिष्यति। कौरवाणां रणे भूते सर्वक्षत्रसमागमे
He will slay all those kings who are wicked, when the great battle of the Kauravas takes place, with all the kṣatriyas assembled.
सारथ्यमर्जुनस्यायं स्वयं देवः करिष्यति। निःक्षत्रियां धरां कृत्वा भोक्ष्यते शेषतां गताम्
This very Lord will become Arjuna's charioteer, and having made the earth free of kṣatriyas, he will enjoy it, having reached its end.
सर्वं यदुकुलं चैव देवलोकं नयिष्यति। भीष्म उवाच। क एष वसुदेवस्तु देवकी का यशस्विनी
He will lead the entire Yadu clan to the world of the gods. Bhīṣma said: Who is this Vasudeva, and who is the illustrious Devakī?
नंदगोपश्च कश्चैव यशोदा का महाव्रता। या विष्णुं पोषितवती यां स मातेत्यभाषत
Who is Nandagopa, and who is the great-vowed Yaśodā, who raised Viṣṇu and whom he addressed as mother?
या गर्भं जनयामास या चैनं समवर्द्धयत्। पुलस्त्य उवाच। पुरुषः कश्यपश्चासावदितिस्तत्प्रिया स्मृता
Who bore him in her womb, and who raised him? Pulastya said: The man was Kaśyapa, and she is remembered as his beloved Aditi.
