देवकी श्रुतदेवा च यशोदा च श्रुतिश्रवा। श्रीदेवा चोपदेवा च सुरूपा चेति सप्तमी
Devaki, Shrutadeva, Yashoda, Shrutishrava, Shrideva, Upadeva, and Surupa—these are the seven.
नवोग्रसेनस्य सुताः कंसस्तेषां च पूर्वजः। न्यग्रोधस्तु सुनामा च कंकः शंकुः सुभूश्च यः
Ugrasena had nine sons, with Kamsa as the eldest; Nyagrodha, Sunama, Kanka, Shanku, and Subhu as well.
अन्यस्तु राष्ट्रपालश्च बद्धमुष्टिः समुष्टिकः। तेषां स्वसारः पंचासन्कंसा कंसवती तथा
Others were Rashtrapala, Baddhamushti, and Samushtika; their five sisters were Kamsa, Kamsavati, and others.
सुरभी राष्ट्रपाली च कंका चेति वरांगनाः। उग्रसेनः सहापत्यो व्याख्यातः कुकुरोद्भवः
Surabhi, Rashtrapali, and Kanka—these were distinguished women; Ugrasena, along with his children, is described as descended from Kukura.
भजमानस्य पुत्रोभूद्रथिमुख्यो विदूरथः। राजाधिदेवः शूरश्च विदूरथसुतोभवत्
Bhajamana's son was the chief of charioteers, Viduratha; Rajadhideva and Shura were born, and Viduratha was their father.
राजाधिदेवस्य सुतौ जज्ञाते वीरसंमतौ। क्षत्रव्रतेतिनिरतौ शोणाश्वः श्वेतवाहनः
Rajadhideva had two sons, esteemed as heroes: Shonashva and Shvetavahana, devoted to the warrior's vow.
शोणाश्वस्य सुताः पंच शूरा रणविशारदाः। शमी च राजशर्मा च निमूर्त्तः शत्रुजिच्छुचिः
Shonashva had five sons, skilled in battle: Shami, Rajasharma, Nimurtta, Shatrujit, and Shuchi.
शमीपुत्रः प्रतिक्षत्रः प्रतिक्षत्रस्य चात्मजः। प्रतिक्षत्रसुतो भोजो हृदीकस्तस्य चात्मजः। हृदीकस्याभवन्पुत्रा दश भीमपराक्रमाः
Shami's son was Pratikshatra; Pratikshatra's son was Bhoja; Hridhika was his son; Hridhika had ten sons of mighty valor.
कृतवर्माग्रजस्तेषां शतधन्वा च सत्तमः। देवार्हश्च सुभानुश्च भीषणश्च महाबलः
Among them, Kṛtavarman was the eldest, and also Śatadhanvan, the most excellent; Devārha, Subhānu, and Bhīṣaṇa of great strength.
अजातश्च विजातश्च करकश्च करंधमः। देवार्हस्य सुतो विद्वान्जज्ञे कंबलबर्हिषः
Ajāta, Vijāta, Karaka, and Karaṃdhama; and Devārha's learned son, Kaṃbalabarhiṣa, was born.
असमौजास्ततस्तस्य समौजाश्च सुतावुभौ। अजातपुत्रस्य सुतौ प्रजायेते समौजसौ
Then Asamaujā and Samaujā were both sons of his; to Ajāta's son were born two sons, both named Samaujas.
समौजः पुत्रा विख्यातास्त्रयः परमधार्मिकाः। सुदंशश्च सुवंशश्च कृष्ण इत्यनुनामतः
Samauja had three sons, renowned and supremely righteous: Sudaṃśa, Suvaṃśa, and Kṛṣṇa, so named.
अंधकानामिमं वंशं यः कीर्तयति नित्यशः। आत्मनो विपुलं वंशं प्रजामाप्नोत्ययं ततः
Whoever recites this lineage of the Andhakas continually, he attains a vast lineage and progeny himself.
गांधारी चैव माद्री च क्रोष्टोर्भार्ये बभूवतुः। गांधारी जनयामास सुनित्रं मित्रवत्सलम्
Gāndhārī and Mādrī became the wives of Kroṣṭu; Gāndhārī gave birth to Sunitra, who was affectionate to friends.
माद्री युधाजितं पुत्रं ततो वै देवमीढुषं। अनमित्रं शिनिं चैव पंचात्र कृतलक्षणाः
Mādrī bore a son, Yudhājit, and then Devamīḍhuṣa; also Anamitra and Śini—these five were marked by distinction.
अनमित्रसुतो निघ्नो निघ्नस्यापि च द्वौ सुतौ। प्रसेनश्च महावीर्यः शक्तिसेनश्च तावुभौ
Anamitra's son was Nighna, and Nighna had two sons: Prasena, of great valor, and Śaktisena, those two.
स्यमंतकं प्रसेनस्य मणिरत्नमनुत्तमं। पृथिव्यां मणिरत्नानां राजेति समुदाहृतम्
Syamantaka, Prasena's peerless jewel, is declared the king among all jewels on earth.
हृदि कृत्वा सुबहुशो मणिं तं स व्यराजत। मणिरत्नं ययाचेथ राजार्थं शौरिरुत्तमम्
Wearing that jewel often upon his heart, he shone; Śauri requested that supreme jewel from him for the sake of the kingdom.
गोविंदश्च न तं लेभे शक्तोपि न जहार सः। कदाचिन्मृगयां यातः प्रसेनस्तेन भूषितः
Even though powerful, Govinda did not obtain it, nor did he seize it; once, Prasena, adorned with it, went out hunting.
बिले शब्दं स शुश्राव कृतं सत्त्वेन केनचित्। ततः प्रविश्य स बिलं प्रसेनो ह्यृक्षमासदत्
In a cave, he heard a sound made by some creature; then, entering the cave, Prasena encountered a bear.
ऋक्षः प्रसेनं च तथा ऋक्षं चापि प्रसेनजित्। आसाद्य युयुधाते तौ परस्परजयेच्छया
The bear and Prasena, and also Prasenajit with the bear, met and fought, each desiring victory over the other.
हत्वा ऋक्षः प्रसेनं च ततस्तं मणिमाददात्। प्रसेनं तु हतं श्रुत्वा गोविंदः परिशंकितः
After killing Prasena, the bear took that jewel; when Govinda heard that Prasena had been slain, he became suspicious.
सत्राजित्रा तु तद्भ्रात्रा यादवैश्च तथापरैः। गोविंदेन हतो नूनं प्रसेनो मणिकारणात्
By Satrājit, his brother, and by the Yādavas and others, it was said: 'Surely Govinda has killed Prasena for the sake of the jewel.'
प्रसेनस्तु गतोरण्यं मणिरत्नेन भूषितः। तं दृष्ट्वा निजघानाथ न त्यजन्तं स्यमंतकम्
Prasena, having gone to the forest adorned with the jewel, was struck down when he would not relinquish the Syamantaka.
जघानैवाप्रदानेन शत्रुभूतं च केशवः। इति प्रवादस्सर्वत्र ख्यातस्सत्राजिता कृतः
He was slain for not giving it up, and Keśava became an enemy; thus, everywhere, this rumor spread, started by Satrājit.
अथ दीर्घेण कालेन मृगयां निर्गतः पुनः। यदृच्छया च गोविंदो बिलाभ्याशमथागमत्
Then, after a long time, as he went out hunting again, by chance Govinda came near the entrance of a cave.
ततश्शब्दं यथापूर्वं स चक्रे ऋक्षराड्बली। शब्दं श्रुत्वा तु गोविंदः खङ्गपाणिः प्रविश्य च
Then, as before, the mighty king of bears made a sound; hearing that sound, Govinda, sword in hand, entered.
अपश्यज्जांबवंतं च ऋक्षराजं महाबलं। ततस्तूर्णं हृषीकेशस्तमृक्षमतिरंहसा
He saw Jāmbavān, the great and powerful king of bears; then Hṛṣīkeśa swiftly approached that bear with great speed.
जांबवंतं स जग्राह क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः। दृष्ट्वा चैनं तथा विष्णुं कर्मभिर्वैष्णवीं तनुं
With eyes reddened by anger, he seized Jāmbavān; seeing Viṣṇu thus, in his divine form and deeds,
तुष्टाव ऋक्षराजोपि विष्णुसूक्तेन सत्वरं। ततस्तु भगवांस्तुष्टो वरेण समरोचयत्
The king of bears quickly praised him with a hymn to Viṣṇu; then the Blessed Lord, being pleased, offered him a boon.
