देवगर्भसमो जज्ञे देवक्षत्रस्य नंदनः। मधुर्नाममहातेजा मधोः कुरुवशः स्मृतः
Devakshatra's son, equal to the gods, was born named Madhur, of great splendor; Madhur's son Madhu is known as of the Kuru lineage.
आसीत्कुरुवशात्पुत्रः पुरुहोत्रः प्रतापवान्। अंशुर्जज्ञेथ वैदर्भ्यां द्रवंत्यां पुरुहोत्रतः
From the Kuru lineage was born the mighty Puruhotra; from Puruhotra and his wife Dravanti of Vidarbha, Anshu was born.
वेत्रकी त्वभवद्भार्या अंशोस्तस्यां व्यजायत। सात्वतः सत्वसंपन्नः सात्वतान्कीर्तिवर्द्धनः
Vetrakī became the wife of Aṃśa, and from her was born Sātvata, endowed with great virtue, the enhancer of the fame of the Sātvatas.
इमां विसृष्टिं विज्ञाय ज्यामघस्य महात्मनः। प्रजावानेति सायुज्यं राज्ञः सोमस्य धीमतः
Having understood this lineage of the great-souled Jyāmagha, know that he, possessing many descendants, attained union with the wise king Soma.
सात्वतान्सत्वसंपन्ना कौसल्या सुषुवे सुतान्। तेषां सर्गाश्च चत्वारो विस्तरेणैव तान्शृणु
Kausalyā gave birth to sons for Sātvata, all endowed with virtue; now hear in detail about their four lineages.
भजमानस्य सृंजय्यां भाजनामा सुतोभवत्। सृंजयस्य सुतायां तु भाजकास्तु ततोभवन्
To Bhajamāna, a son named Bhājana was born from Sṛṃjaya; and from the daughter of Sṛṃjaya, the Bhājakas were then born.
तस्य भाजस्य भार्ये द्वे सुषुवाते सुतान्बहून्। नेमिं चकृकणं चैव वृष्णिं परपुरंजयं
Bhājana had two wives, both of whom bore him many sons: Nemi, Cakṛkaṇa, Vṛṣṇi, and Parapuraṃjaya.
ते भाजकाः स्मृता यस्माद्भजमानाद्वि जज्ञिरे। देवावृधः पृथुर्नाम मधूनां मित्रवर्द्धनः
Those born from Bhajamāna are known as the Bhājakas; from them were born Devāvṛdha, Pṛthu by name, and Mitravarddhana among the Madhus.
अपुत्रस्त्वभवद्राजा चचार परमं तपः। पुत्रः सर्वगुणोपेतो मम भूयादिति स्पृहन्
The king was without a son and performed intense austerity, desiring, 'May I have a son endowed with all virtues.'
संयोज्य कृष्णमेवाथ पर्णाशाया जलं स्पृशन्। सा तोयस्पर्शनात्तस्य सांनिध्यं निम्नगा ह्यगात्
Then, joining with Kṛṣṇa and touching water in the leaf-hut, by the touch of that water, the river approached his presence.
कल्याणं चरतस्तस्य शुशोच निम्नगाततः। चिंतयाथ परीतात्मा जगामाथ विनिश्चयम्
As he was engaged in auspicious acts, the river grieved for him; then, filled with concern, he came to a decision.
भूत्वा गच्छाम्यहं नारी यस्यामेवं विधः सुतः। जायेत तस्मादद्याहं भवाम्यस्य सुतप्रदा
'I shall become a woman and go to him, so that such a son may be born; therefore, today I shall become the giver of a son to him.'
अथ भूत्वा कुमारी सा बिभ्रती परमं वपुः। ज्ञापयामास राजानं तामियेष नृपस्ततः
Then, having become a maiden of surpassing beauty, she informed the king, and the king desired her.
अथसानवमेमासिसुषुवेसरितांवरा। पुत्रं सर्वगुणोपेतं बभ्रुं देवावृधात्परम्
She, the best among maidens, gave birth to a son endowed with all virtues, Babhru, superior even to Devāvṛdha.
अत्र वंशे पुराणज्ञा ब्रुवंतीति परिश्रुतम्। गुणान्देवावृधस्याथ कीर्त्तयंतो महात्मनः
In this lineage, those who know the ancient tales are renowned for recounting the virtues of the great-souled Devāvṛdha.
बभ्रुः श्रेष्ठो मनुष्याणां देवैर्देवावृधः समः। षष्टिः शतं च पुत्राणां सहस्राणि च सप्ततिः
Babhru was the best among men, equal to the gods was Devāvṛdha; he had one hundred and sixty thousand sons.
एतेमृतत्वं संप्राप्ता बभ्रोर्देवावृधादपि। यज्ञदानतपोधीमान्ब्रह्मण्यस्सुदृढव्रतः
These attained immortality, surpassing even Babhru and Devāvṛdha; they were devoted to sacrifice, charity, austerity, wisdom, the Brahman, and firm in their vows.
रूपवांश्च महातेजा भोजोतोमृतकावतीम्। शरकान्तस्य दुहिता सुषुवे चतुरः सुतान्
Handsome and of great brilliance, Bhoja married Mṛtakāvatī, the daughter of Śarakānta, who bore him four sons.
कुकुरं भजमानं च श्यामं कंबलबर्हिषम्। कुकुरस्यात्मजो वृष्टिर्वृष्टेस्तु तनयो धृतिः
Kukura, Bhajamāna, Śyāma, and Kaṃbalabarhiṣa; Kukura's son was Vṛṣṭi, and Vṛṣṭi's son was Dhṛti.
कपोतरोमा तस्यापि तित्तिरिस्तस्य चात्मजः। तस्यासीद्बहुपुत्रस्तु विद्वान्पुत्रो नरिः किल
Kapotaromā was his son, and Tittiri was his son; he had many sons, and among them was a wise son named Nari.
ख्यायते तस्य नामान्यच्चंदनोदकदुंदुभिः। अस्यासीदभिजित्पुत्रस्ततो जातः पुनर्वसुः
His names are renowned: Candana, Udaka, and Dundubhi. Abhijit had a son, and from him was born Punarvasu.
अपुत्रोह्यभिजित्पूर्वमृषिभिः प्रेरितो मुदा। अश्वमेधंतुपुत्रार्थमाजुहावनरोत्तमः
Abhijit, who was previously childless, was joyfully urged by the sages; for the sake of a son, the noble one performed an ashvamedha sacrifice.
तस्य मध्ये विचरतः सभामध्यात्समुत्थितः। अन्धस्तु विद्वान्धर्मज्ञो यज्ञदाता पुनर्वसुः
While he was moving among them, from the center of the assembly arose Punarvasu, blind yet learned, righteous, and a giver of sacrifices.
तस्यासीत्पुत्रमिथुनं वसोश्चारिजितः किल। आहुकश्चाहुकी चैव ख्याता मतिमतां वर५० 1.13.
Punarvasu had twin children: Vasu and Arijita, it is said. Also Ahuka and Ahuki, renowned among the wise.
इमांश्चोदाहरंत्यत्र श्लोकांश्चातिरसात्मकान्। सोपासंगानुकर्षाणां तनुत्राणां वरूथिनाम्
Here, they recite verses of extraordinary character, with their appendages, concerning the leaders of the troops and the protectors of the ranks.
रथानां मेघघोषाणां सहस्राणि दशैव तु। नासत्यवादिनो भोजा नायज्ञा नासहस्रदाः
There were ten thousand chariots sounding like thunderclouds; the Bhojas were not speakers of falsehood, nor sacrificers, nor givers of thousands.
नाशुचिर्नाप्यविद्वांसो न भोजादधिकोभवत्। आहुकां तमनुप्राप्त इत्येषोन्वय उच्यते
Neither impure nor ignorant, none surpassed the Bhojas; thus, the lineage of the Ahukas is described.
आहुकश्चाप्यवंतीषु स्वसारं चाहुकीं ददौ। आहुकस्यैव दुहिता पुत्रौ द्वौ समसूयत
Ahuka gave his sister Ahuki in marriage in the Avanti region; Ahuka's own daughter bore two sons.
देवकं चोग्रसेनं च देवगर्भसमावुभौ। देवकस्य सुताश्चैव जज्ञिरे त्रिदशोपमाः
Devaka and Ugrasena, both born of divine wombs; and Devaka's sons were born, resembling the gods.
देववानुपदेवश्च सुदेवो देवरक्षितः। तेषां स्वसारः सप्तैव वसुदेवाय ता ददौ
Devavan, Upadeva, Sudeva, and Devarakshita; their seven sisters were given to Vasudeva.
