मुमोच राजन्पौत्रं मे सख्यं कृत्वा च पार्थिवः। तस्य बाहुसहस्रस्य बभूव ज्यातलस्वनः
The king released my grandson, forming a friendship; the sound of the bowstring of his thousand arms arose.
युगांताग्नेः प्रवृत्तस्य यथा ज्यातलनिःस्वनः। अहो बलं विधेर्वीर्यं भार्गवः स यदाच्छिनत्
As the sound of the bowstring at the end of an age's fire arises, so was the power and might of fate when Bhārgava cut it.
मृधे सहस्रं बाहूनां हेमतालवनं यथा। यं वसिष्ठस्तु संक्रुद्धो ह्यर्जुनं शप्तवान्विभुः
In battle, a thousand arms fell like golden palm groves; it was Vasiṣṭha, enraged, who cursed Arjuna.
यस्माद्वनं प्रदग्धं ते विश्रुतं मम हैहय। तस्मात्ते दुष्कृतं कर्म कृतमन्यो हनिष्यति
Because you burned my forest, O Haihaya, your infamous deed will be punished by another who will slay you.
छित्वा बाहुसहस्रं ते प्रमथ्य तरसा बली। तपस्वी ब्राह्मणस्त्वां वै वधिष्यति स भार्गवः
Having cut off your thousand arms and subdued you with force, a powerful ascetic brāhmaṇa, Bhārgava, will kill you.
तस्य रामोथ हंतासीन्मुनिशापेन धीमतः। तस्य पुत्रशतं त्वासीत्पंच तत्र महारथाः
Rāma became his slayer by the curse of the wise sage; he had a hundred sons, of whom five were great chariot-warriors.
कृतास्त्रा बलिनः शूरा धर्मात्मानो महाबल। शूरसेनश्च शूरश्च धृष्टो वै कृष्ण एव च
They were skilled in weapons, mighty, heroic, righteous, and of great strength: Śūrasena, Śūra, Dhṛṣṭa, and also Kṛṣṇa.
जयद्ध्वजः स वै कर्ता अवन्तिश्च रसापतिः। जयध्वजस्य पुत्रस्तु तालजंघो महाबलः
Jayaddhvaja was the chief among them, and Avanti, the lord of Rasā; Jayadhvaja's son was Tālajaṅgha, of great might.
तस्य पुत्राश्शतान्येव तालजंघा इति स्मृताः। तेषां पंचकुलान्यासन्हैहयानां महात्मनाम्
His sons, counted in the hundreds, were known as the Tālajaṅghas; among them were five great lineages of the noble Haihayas.
वीतिहोत्राश्च संजाता भोजाश्चावंतयस्तथा। तुंडकेराश्च विक्रांतास्तालजंघाः प्रकीर्तिताः
The Vītihotras arose, as did the Bhojas, the Avantis, and the valiant Tuṇḍikeras—these are renowned as the Tālajaṅghas.
वीतिहोत्रसुतश्चापि अनंतो नाम वीर्यवान्। दुर्जयस्तस्य पुत्रस्तु बभूवामित्रकर्षणः
And Vītihotra's son was Ananta, famed for his strength; his son was Durjaya, subduer of foes.
सद्भावेन महाराजः प्रजाधर्मेण पालयन्। कार्तवीर्यार्जुनो नाम राजा बाहुसहस्रधृत्
With integrity, the great king ruled his people by the law of righteousness—Kārtavīryārjuna by name, the king who bore a thousand arms.
येन सागरपर्यंता धनुषा निर्जिता मही। यस्तस्यकीर्तयेन्नाम कल्यमुत्थाय मानवः
By him, the earth up to the ocean's edge was conquered with his bow; whoever recites his name at dawn, O mortal,
न तस्य वित्तनाशः स्यान्नष्टं च लभते पुनः। कार्तवीर्यस्य यो जन्म कथयेदिह धीमतः। यथा यष्टा यथा दाता स्वर्गलोके महीयते
Will not suffer loss of wealth, and what is lost will be regained; whoever here recounts the birth of Kārtavīrya, the wise one, is honored in heaven as one who has performed sacrifice and given gifts.
पुलस्त्य उवाच। क्रोष्टोः शृणु त्वं राजेंद्र वंशमुत्तमपूरुषम्। यस्यान्ववाये संभूतो विष्णुर्वृष्णिकुलोद्वहः
Pulastya said: Hear, O king, of the noble lineage of Kroṣṭu, from whose line was born Viṣṇu, the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis.
क्रोष्टोरेवाभवत्पुत्रो वृजिनीवान्महायशाः। तस्य पुत्रोभवत्स्वातिः कुशंकुस्तत्सुतोभवत्
Kroṣṭu had a son named Vṛjinīvān, of great fame; his son was Svāti, and Kuśaṃku was Svāti's son.
कुशंकोरभवत्पुत्रो नाम्ना चित्ररथोस्य तु। शशबिंदुरिति ख्यातश्चक्रवर्ती बभूव ह
Kuśaṃku's son was named Citraratha, and he became known as Śaśabindu, a universal emperor.
अत्रानुवंशश्लोकोयं गीतस्तस्य पुराभवत्। शशबिंदोस्तु पुत्राणां शतानामभवच्छतम्
Here is a verse from the genealogies, sung of old: Śaśabindu had a hundred sons, and each of them had a hundred sons.
धीमतां चारुरूपाणां भूरिद्रविणतेजसाम्। तेषां शतप्रधानानां पृथुसाह्वा महाबलाः
They were wise, beautiful, and possessed of great wealth and splendor; among these hundred chiefs, the Pṛthus were mighty.
पृथुश्रवाः पृथुयशाः पृथुतेजाः पृथूद्भवः। पृथुकीर्तिः पृथुमतो राजानः शशबिंदवः
Pṛthuśravā, Pṛthuyaśas, Pṛthutejas, Pṛthūdbhava, and Pṛthukīrti—these were the kings descended from Pṛthumat, the Śaśabindus.
शंसंति च पुराणज्ञाः पृथुश्रवसमुत्तमम्। ततश्चास्याभवन्पुत्राः उशना शत्रुतापनः
The knowers of ancient lore praise Pṛthuśravā as the foremost; from him were born sons, among whom was Uśanā, the tormentor of foes.
पुत्रश्चोशनसस्तस्य शिनेयुर्नामसत्तमः। आसीत्शिनेयोः पुत्रो यः स रुक्मकवचो मतः
Uśanā's son was Śineyu, the best of men; Śineyu's son was known as Rukmakavaca.
निहत्य रुक्मकवचो युद्धे युद्धविशारदः। धन्विनो विविधैर्बाणैरवाप्य पृथिवीमिमाम्
Having slain Rukmakavaca in battle, skilled in warfare, with many arrows from his bow, he gained this earth.
अश्वमेधे ऽददाद्राजा ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च दक्षिणां। जज्ञे तु रुक्मकवचात्परावृत्परवीरहा
At the aśvamedha sacrifice, the king gave gifts to the brāhmaṇas; and from Rukmakavaca was born Parāvṛt, destroyer of enemy heroes.
तत्पुत्रा जज्ञिरे पंच महावीर्यपराक्रमाः। रुक्मेषुः पृथुरुक्मश्च ज्यामघः परिघो हरिः
To him were born five sons, all of great strength and valor: Rukmeshu, Prithurukma, Jyamagha, Parigha, and Hari.
परिघं च हरिं चैव विदेहे स्थापयत्पिता। रुक्मेषुरभवद्राजा पृथुरुक्मस्तथाश्रयः
Their father settled Parigha and Hari in Videha; Rukmeshu became king, and Prithurukma was his supporter.
ताभ्यां प्रव्राजितो राज्याज्ज्यामघोवसदाश्रमे। प्रशांतश्चाश्रमस्थस्तु ब्राह्मणेन विबोधितः
By those two, Jyamagha was exiled from the kingdom and dwelt in an ashram; living there peacefully, he was enlightened by a Brahmin.
जगाम धनुरादाय देशमन्यं ध्वजी रथी। नर्मदातट एकाकी केवलं वृत्तिकर्शितः
Taking up his bow, alone and worn by hardship, he went to another land, bearing a banner and riding a chariot, to the bank of the Narmada.
ऋक्षवंतं गिरिं गत्वा मुक्तमन्यैरुपाविशत्। ज्यामघस्याभवद्भार्या शैब्या परिणता सती
He reached Mount Rikshavat and settled there, a place abandoned by others; Jyamagha's wife, the faithful Shaibya, stayed with him.
अपुत्रोप्यभवद्राजा भार्यामन्यामचिंतयन्। तस्यासीद्विजयो युद्धे तत्र कन्यामवाप्य सः
Though he was king, he had no son and began to consider another wife; in battle he gained victory and there obtained a maiden.
