जातो बाहुसहस्रेण सप्तद्वीपेश्वरो नृपः। वर्षायुतं तपस्तेपे दुश्चरं पृथिवीपतिः
He was born with a thousand arms, a king lord of the seven islands; for ten thousand years, that ruler performed severe austerities.
दत्तमाराधयामास कार्त्तवीर्योत्रिसंभवम्। तस्मै दत्तो वरान्प्रादाच्चतुरः पुरुषोत्तमः
He worshipped Dattātreya, born of Kārtavīrya’s line; to him, Dattātreya, the supreme person, granted four boons.
पूर्वं बाहुसहस्रं तु स वव्रे राजसत्तमः। अधर्मं ध्यायमानस्य भीतिश्चापि निवारणम्
First, that best of kings requested a thousand arms; also, the removal of fear when contemplating unrighteousness.
युद्धेन पृथिवीं जित्वा धर्मेणावाप्य वै बलम्। संग्रामे वर्तमानस्य वधश्चैवाधिकाद्भवेत्
Having conquered the earth through battle and gained strength through righteousness, in the midst of war, he would have the power to slay even those superior to himself.
एतेनेयं वसुमती सप्तद्वीपा सपत्तना। सप्तोदधि परिक्षिप्ता क्षात्रेण विधिना जिता
By this, the earth with its seven islands and cities, encircled by seven oceans, was conquered according to the kṣatriya law.
जज्ञे बाहुसहस्रं च इच्छतस्तस्य धीमतः। सर्वे यज्ञा महाबाहोस्तस्यासन्भूरिदक्षिणाः
To that wise one desiring it, a thousand arms were born; all the sacrifices of that mighty-armed one were abundant in gifts.
सर्वे कांचनयूपास्ते सर्वे कांचनवेदिकाः। सर्वे देवैश्च संप्राप्ता विमानस्थैरलंकृतैः
All the sacrificial posts were of gold, all the altars were golden; all the gods arrived, adorned, in their celestial chariots.
गंधर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च नित्यमेवापि सेविताः। यस्य यज्ञे जगौ गाथा गंधंर्वो नारदस्तथा
He was always attended by Gandharvas and Apsarases; at his sacrifice, the Gandharva Nārada sang hymns.
यज्ञैर्दानैस्तपोभिश्च विक्रमेण श्रुतेन च। सप्तद्वीपाननुचरन्वेगेन पवनोपमः
By sacrifices, gifts, austerities, valor, and learning, he traversed the seven continents with the speed of the wind.
पंचाशीतिसहस्राणि वर्षाणां च नराधिपः। सप्तद्वीपपृथिव्याश्च चक्रवर्ती बभूव ह
The king ruled for eighty-five thousand years, becoming the emperor of the earth with its seven continents.
स एव पशुपालोभूत्क्षेत्रपालः स एव हि। स एव वृष्ट्या पर्जन्यो योगित्वादर्जुनोभवत्
He was the protector of cattle, the guardian of fields, and through his union with rain, he became Arjuna, like Parjanya.
योसौ बाहुसहस्रेण ज्याघातकठिनत्वचा। भाति रश्मिसहस्रेण शारदेनेव भास्करः
He, with a thousand arms hardened by the bowstring's strike, shines with a thousand rays like the autumn sun.
एष नाम मनुष्येषु माहिष्मत्यां महाद्युतिः। एष वेगं समुद्रस्य प्रावृट्काले भजेत वै
This illustrious man among humans in Māhiṣmatī possesses the force of the ocean during the rainy season.
क्रीडते स्वसुखा ये विप्रतिस्रोतो महीपतिः। ललनाः क्रीडता तेन प्रतिबद्धोर्मिमालिनी
The king, delighting in his own pleasure, plays amidst opposing currents; the waves, adorned with foam, are bound by his sport.
ऊर्मिभ्रुकुटिमाला सा शंकिताभ्येति नर्मदा। एष एव मनोर्वंशे त्ववगाहेन्महार्णवम्
The Narmadā, adorned with a garland of frowning waves, approaches cautiously; he alone, in the Manu lineage, plunges into the great ocean.
करेणोद्धृत्य वेगं तु कामिनीप्रीणनेन तु। तस्य बाहुसहस्रेण क्षोभ्यमाणे महोदधौ
Lifting the force with his hand, pleasing his beloved, as the great ocean is agitated by his thousand arms.
भवंति लीना निश्चेष्टाः पातालस्था महासुराः। तदूरुक्षोभचकिता अमृतोत्पादशंकिताः
The great demons dwelling in the netherworld become submerged and motionless, frightened by the agitation of his thighs, fearing the emergence of nectar.
नता निश्चलमूर्द्धानो भवंति च महोरगाः। एष धन्वी च चिक्षेप रावणं प्रति सायकान्
The great serpents become bowed with unmoving heads; this archer hurled arrows at Rāvaṇa.
एष धन्वी धनुर्गृह्य उत्सिक्तं पंचभिः शरैः। लंकेशं मोहयित्वा तु सबलं रावणं बलात्
This archer, taking up his bow, bewildered the lord of Laṅkā with five arrows, overpowering Rāvaṇa and his forces.
निर्जित्य बद्ध्वा त्वानीय माहिष्मत्याम्बबंध तम्। ततो गतोहं तस्याग्रे अर्जुनं संप्रसादयन्
Having conquered and bound him, he brought him to Māhiṣmatī and imprisoned him; then I went before him, appeasing Arjuna.
मुमोच राजन्पौत्रं मे सख्यं कृत्वा च पार्थिवः। तस्य बाहुसहस्रस्य बभूव ज्यातलस्वनः
The king released my grandson, forming a friendship; the sound of the bowstring of his thousand arms arose.
युगांताग्नेः प्रवृत्तस्य यथा ज्यातलनिःस्वनः। अहो बलं विधेर्वीर्यं भार्गवः स यदाच्छिनत्
As the sound of the bowstring at the end of an age's fire arises, so was the power and might of fate when Bhārgava cut it.
मृधे सहस्रं बाहूनां हेमतालवनं यथा। यं वसिष्ठस्तु संक्रुद्धो ह्यर्जुनं शप्तवान्विभुः
In battle, a thousand arms fell like golden palm groves; it was Vasiṣṭha, enraged, who cursed Arjuna.
यस्माद्वनं प्रदग्धं ते विश्रुतं मम हैहय। तस्मात्ते दुष्कृतं कर्म कृतमन्यो हनिष्यति
Because you burned my forest, O Haihaya, your infamous deed will be punished by another who will slay you.
छित्वा बाहुसहस्रं ते प्रमथ्य तरसा बली। तपस्वी ब्राह्मणस्त्वां वै वधिष्यति स भार्गवः
Having cut off your thousand arms and subdued you with force, a powerful ascetic brāhmaṇa, Bhārgava, will kill you.
तस्य रामोथ हंतासीन्मुनिशापेन धीमतः। तस्य पुत्रशतं त्वासीत्पंच तत्र महारथाः
Rāma became his slayer by the curse of the wise sage; he had a hundred sons, of whom five were great chariot-warriors.
कृतास्त्रा बलिनः शूरा धर्मात्मानो महाबल। शूरसेनश्च शूरश्च धृष्टो वै कृष्ण एव च
They were skilled in weapons, mighty, heroic, righteous, and of great strength: Śūrasena, Śūra, Dhṛṣṭa, and also Kṛṣṇa.
जयद्ध्वजः स वै कर्ता अवन्तिश्च रसापतिः। जयध्वजस्य पुत्रस्तु तालजंघो महाबलः
Jayaddhvaja was the chief among them, and Avanti, the lord of Rasā; Jayadhvaja's son was Tālajaṅgha, of great might.
तस्य पुत्राश्शतान्येव तालजंघा इति स्मृताः। तेषां पंचकुलान्यासन्हैहयानां महात्मनाम्
His sons, counted in the hundreds, were known as the Tālajaṅghas; among them were five great lineages of the noble Haihayas.
वीतिहोत्राश्च संजाता भोजाश्चावंतयस्तथा। तुंडकेराश्च विक्रांतास्तालजंघाः प्रकीर्तिताः
The Vītihotras arose, as did the Bhojas, the Avantis, and the valiant Tuṇḍikeras—these are renowned as the Tālajaṅghas.
