Divyajayu, and Shatayu—all possessing divine strength and energy; Ayu’s son was Nahusha, and also Vriddhasharma.
Raji, Danda, and Vishakha—these were the five great warriors; a hundred sons were born to Raji, known as the Rajeyas.
Raji worshipped the sinless Nārāyaṇa; pleased by his austerity, Viṣṇu granted him a boon, O King.
He then became victorious over gods, asuras, and humans; and so a battle between gods and asuras took place for three hundred years.
In the fierce struggle between Prahlāda and Indra, neither could prevail; then, the gods and asuras separately approached the four-faced god.
They asked, 'Who among these two will be victorious, where Raji stands?' Requested for victory, the king was asked to become their ally.
He said to the daityas, 'If I become your lord, then so be it.' The asuras did not agree, but the gods accepted at that time.
'Be our lord and destroy the strength of our enemies,' they said; then all those who were to be slain by the wielder of the thunderbolt were destroyed.
Indra, pleased with his deed, made him his son; having given the kingdom to Indra before, Raji went to practice austerity.
Then, the sons of Raji took away Indra's power, his share of sacrifices, and his kingdom, being endowed with the strength and virtues of austerity.
Thus deprived of his kingdom and oppressed by the sons of Raji, Indra, afflicted, spoke to Bṛhaspati.
'O Bṛhaspati, deprived of my share of sacrifices and my kingdom, I am afflicted; O lord of wisdom, make effort so that I may regain my kingdom.'
Then Bṛhaspati made Indra proud with strength by means of rites for pacifying the planets and nourishing rituals.
Then Bṛhaspati went and deluded the sons of Raji, adopting the doctrine of the Jinas, which is outside the Vedas, though he was learned in dharma.
The lord of wisdom caused them to fall away from the three Vedas, recognizing them as outside the Vedas and filled with arguments.
Indra struck down all those excluded from dharma with his thunderbolt; now I will tell you of the seven righteous sons of Nahuṣa.
They are Yati, Yayāti, Śaryāti, Uttāna, Para, Ayati, and Viyati—these seven increased the lineage.
Yati, even in his youth, became a yogi of the Vaikhānasa order; Yayāti always ruled the kingdom, taking refuge solely in dharma.
Śarmiṣṭhā, daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, became his wife; and Devayānī, the virtuous daughter of Bhārgava, as well.
I will now tell you the names of Yayāti's five heirs: Devayānī bore him the sons Yadu and Turvasu.
Thus, Śarmiṣṭhā bore sons to Druhyu and Pūru; Yadu and Pūru, O Bharata, became the enhancers of their lineages.
I will now recount the lineage of Pūru, O king, in which you were born; from Yadu arose the Yādavas, among whom were Balarāma and Keśava.
For the purpose of relieving the earth's burden and for the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas, Yadu had five sons, comparable to the sons of the gods.
Sahasrajit was the eldest, then Kroṣṭā, Nīla, Añjika, and Raghu; Sahasrajit’s heir was a king named Śatajita.
Śatajita had three heirs, supremely righteous: Haihaya, Haya, and Tālahaya.
Haihaya’s heir was Dharmanetra, renowned for his virtue; Dharmanetra’s son was Kuṃti, and his son was Saṃhata.
Saṃhata’s heir was the king named Mahiṣmān; Mahiṣmān’s son was the valiant Bhadrasena.
In Vārāṇasī, as previously told, there was a king; Bhadrasena’s son was the righteous Durdama.
Durdama’s son was Bhīma, called Dhanaka, powerful in might; Dhanaka had four sons, renowned in the world.
Kṛtāgni, Kṛtavīrya, Kṛtadharmā, and Kṛtaujā were the four; from Kṛtavīrya came Arjuna.
