स्नात्वा सरस्वतीतोये येऽर्चयित्वा च माधवम् । प्रणमंति जगन्नाथं ते यांति परमां गतिम्
Those who bathe in the waters of Sarasvatī, worship Mādhava, and bow to the Lord of the world, attain the highest state.
जाह्नव्युवाच-। विधानं ब्रूहि मे ब्रह्मन्सर्वस्वेन करोम्यहम् । प्रसादयामि देवेशं दामोदरमनामयम्
Jāhnavī said: O Brahman, tell me the procedure; I will perform it in full. I seek the favor of the Lord of gods, Damodara, the flawless.
प्राचीमाधव उवाच-। शृणु देवि प्रवक्ष्यामि त्रिस्पृशाया विधानकम् । यं श्रुत्वापि सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे मुच्यते पातकैर्नरः
Prācīmādhava said: Listen, O goddess, I will explain the procedure for Trispṛśā; hearing it, O best of rivers, a person is freed from sins.
पलेन च पलार्धेन तदर्द्धेनापि वापगे । प्रतिमा मम सौवर्णा कार्या विभवसारतः
With a weight, or half a weight, or even a quarter, O river goddess, a golden image of me should be made according to one's means.
पात्रं ताम्रमयं कार्यं तिलैस्तु परिपूरितम् । सजलं तु घटं शुभ्रं पंचरत्नसमन्वितम्
One should prepare a copper vessel filled with sesame seeds, and a pure water pot adorned with five kinds of gems.
वेष्टितं पुष्पमालाभिः कर्पूरागुरुवासितम् । न्यसेद्दामोदरं पश्चात्स्नापयित्वा विलिप्य च
It should be wrapped with garlands of flowers and scented with camphor and aguru; then, after bathing Damodara and anointing him, one should place it.
परिधानं ततः कार्यं वस्त्रयुग्मेन चान्वितम् । मंत्रैस्तु पूजनं कार्यं पुराणैः समुदीरितैः । पुष्पैः कालोद्भवैः शुभ्रैस्तुलसीपत्रैश्च कोमलैः
After that, clothing should be offered, consisting of a pair of garments; worship should be performed with mantras proclaimed in the Puranas, with fresh, white flowers of the season and tender tulasi leaves.
छत्रं तु विष्णवे दद्यात्पादुकाभ्यां सुसंयुतम् । निवेद्यानि मनोज्ञानि फलानि सुबहून्यपि
One should offer an umbrella to Vishnu, together with sandals, and many delightful fruits as offerings.
उपवीतं तु दातव्यं सोत्तरीयं नवं दृढम् । वैणवं दापयेद्दंडं सुरूपं सोन्नतं दृढम्
A sacred thread should be given, along with a new, strong upper garment; a beautiful, tall, and sturdy Vaishnava staff should also be presented.
दामोदराय वै पादौ जानुनी माधवाय च । गुह्यं कामप्रदायेति कटिं वामनमूर्तये
To Damodara, the feet; to Madhava, the knees; to the form of Vamana, the waist, as the giver of desires.
पद्मनाभाय नाभिं तु जठरं विश्वयोनये । हृदयं ज्ञानगम्याय कंठं वैकुंठगामिने
To Padmanabha, the navel; to Vishvayoni, the abdomen; to the one attainable by knowledge, the heart; to the one who goes to Vaikuntha, the throat.
सहस्रबाहवे बाहू चक्षुषी योगरूपिणे । संपूज्य विधिवद्भक्त्या दद्यादर्घं विधानतः
To the thousand-armed, the arms; to the one of yogic form, the eyes; having worshipped with proper devotion, one should offer arghya according to the rite.
शुभ्रेण नालिकेरेण शंखोपरि स्थितेन हि । सूत्रैरावेष्टितेनैव हस्तयोरुभयोरपि
With a pure coconut placed upon a conch, wrapped with threads, one should offer it with both hands.
स्मृतो हरसि पापानि यदि नित्यं जनार्दन । दुःस्वप्नं दुर्निमित्तानि मनसा दुर्विचिन्विता
O Janardana, if you are remembered always, you destroy sins, bad dreams, evil omens, and troubling thoughts.
नारकं तु भयं देव भयदुर्गतिसंभवम् । यन्मम स्यान्महादेव ऐहिकं पारलौकिकम्
O Lord, whatever fear of hell, misfortune, or calamity may arise for me, whether in this world or the next—
तेन देवेश मां रक्ष गृहाणार्घं नमोस्तु ते । कृपादृष्टिः सदैवास्तु दामोदर ममोपरि
Therefore, Lord of gods, protect me; accept this arghya; I bow to you. May your compassionate gaze always rest upon me, O Damodara.
धूपं दीपं च नैवेद्यं कुर्यान्नीराजनं ततः । शीर्षोपरि सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे भ्रामयेद्वारिजं हरेः
One should offer incense, a lamp, and food, then perform the waving of lights; above the head, one should circle a lotus for Hari, the best of rivers.
कृत्वा विधानमेतद्धि पूजयेत्स्वगुरुं ततः । दद्यात्सुवर्णं वस्त्राणि सोष्णीषं चैव कंचुकम्
Having performed this rite, one should then worship one's own guru, giving gold, garments, a turban, and a tunic.
उपानहोऽपि छत्रं च मुद्रिकां च कमंडलुम् । भोजनं चैव तांबूलं सप्तधान्यं च दक्षिणाम्
Also, one should give sandals, an umbrella, a ring, a water pot, food, betel, seven kinds of grains, and a gift.
गुरुं संपूज्य देवेशं कुर्याज्जागरणं हरेः । गीतनृत्यसमायुक्तं तथा शास्त्रसमन्वितम्
After worshipping the guru and the Lord of gods, one should keep vigil for Hari, accompanied by singing, dancing, and recitation of scriptures.
निशांते चैव देवाय दत्वा चार्घं विधानतः । स्नानादिकां क्रियां कृत्वा भुंजीयाद्वाडवैः सह
At the end of the night, one should offer arghya to the deity according to the rite, perform bathing and other acts, and then eat together with the Brahmins.
शिव उवाच- द्विजैतत्त्रिस्पृशाख्यानमद्भुतं रोमहर्षणम् । श्रुत्वा तु लभते पुण्यं गंगां स्नानसमुद्भवम्
Shiva said: O twice-born, this account of Trispṛśā is wonderful and hair-raising; hearing it, one obtains merit equal to bathing in the Ganga.
अश्वमेधसहस्राणि वाजपेयशतानि च । तत्फलं समवाप्नोति त्रिस्पृशा समुपोषणात्
By observing the Trispṛśā fast even once, one attains the merit of a thousand Aśvamedha sacrifices and a hundred Vājapeya sacrifices.
पितृपक्षो मातृपक्षस्तथा चैवात्मपक्षकः । तैः सर्वैः सह संमुक्तो विष्णुलोके महीयते
Freed together with the paternal line, the maternal line, and one's own descendants, one is honored in the realm of Viṣṇu.
तीर्थकोटिषु यत्पुण्यं क्षेत्रकोटिषु यत्फलम् । तत्फलं समवाप्नोति त्रिस्पृशा समुपोषणात्
Whatever merit is gained at ten million holy places and whatever fruit at ten million sacred fields, that fruit is attained by observing the Trispṛśā fast.
ब्राह्मणा येऽपि कुर्वंति क्षत्रियाः कृष्णमानसाः । वैश्या वा शूद्रजन्मानो ये तथा चान्यजातयः
Brahmins, Kṣatriyas with pure minds, Vaiśyas, those born as Śūdras, and people of other castes—
ते सर्वे मुक्तिमायांति भुवं त्यक्त्वा द्विजोत्तम । मंत्राणां मंत्रराजोऽथ यथा स्याद्द्वादशाक्षरः
—all of them attain liberation, O best of twice-born, after leaving the earth, just as the twelve-syllabled mantra is the king of mantras.
व्रतानां च यथा चैषा येन वै त्रिस्पृशा कृता । ब्रह्मणा च कृता पूर्वं पश्चाद्राजर्षिभिः कृता
Just as this is the foremost of vows, by which the Trispṛśā is performed—first established by Brahmā and later by royal sages.
अन्येषां का कथा वत्स त्रिस्पृशा मुक्तिदायिनी । अनेन विधिना ब्रह्मंस्त्रिस्पृशासंभवं व्रतम्
What need is there to speak of others, child? The Trispṛśā grants liberation. By this method, O Brahmin, is the vow of Trispṛśā established.
यः करोति नरो भक्त्या शृणु वक्ष्यामि तत्फलम् । गंगावगाहने ब्रह्मन्वाराणस्यां तु यत्फलम्
Whoever performs it with devotion—hear now the fruit I will declare: the merit gained by bathing in the Gaṅgā or at Vārāṇasī—
