After worshipping with fragrance and so on, and offering oblations, one should begin the ancestral rite, first preparing a seat of darbha grass and worshipping three vessels.
First making them pure with pavitras, one should pour water reciting 'Śanno devī,' and then place sesame, reciting 'Tilosi,' again offering fragrance and flowers.

The vessel may be made of wood, or again of leaves, or it may be of silver, or even of something originating from the sea.

Reciting 'Yā divyeti,' one should offer arghya, then give fragrance and so on; after presenting a cloth with darbha grass, one should offer shelter first.
Then, having placed the offering in the ancestral vessel, one should set it down facing north; having established a seat for the ancestors, one should serve the offerings.

The ancestors, the former gods, say that what is given in this way is inexhaustible; one should have the recitation of the Veda, the ancestral rites, and all the Purāṇas performed.

The study of the Mahābhārata should be performed, which is most dear to the ancestors; and after the Brāhmaṇas have eaten, food, water, and the like should be offered, O King.
