Avoid those prone to anger, remembering Nārāyaṇa Hari; knowing the ancestors are satisfied, again perform the scattering for all castes.
Retaining the food with water and sesame, scatter it on the ground; after the Brahmins have finished, again offer water with flowers and rice grains.
Recite the svadhā invocation over all the rice balls; perform the rites from beginning to end, otherwise the śrāddha will be fruitless.
After dismissing the Brahmins, bowing to them and circumambulating, the person should face the southern direction, addressing the ancestors.
May our donors increase, may the Vedas and our lineage continue; may our faith not diminish, and may we always have much to give.
May we have abundant food, may we receive guests; may there be those who ask from us, and may we never have to beg from anyone.
This is the rule for the Anvāhārya offering as spoken by Agnimat: just as at the waning of the moon, so too is it prescribed elsewhere.
One should offer the rice-balls to cows, Brahmins, into the fire, or into water; or scatter them at the edge of a field, or immerse them with water.
The wife, endowed with humility, should eat the middle rice-ball; the ancestors place in her the seed for the growth of progeny.
The offering remains until the Brahmins have departed; after completing the rites for the ancestors, one should perform the Vaiśvadeva offering.
Then, together with those honored, one should peacefully partake of the food offered to the ancestors; afterwards, one may eat again, travel, undertake exertion, or engage in intercourse.
One who performs or partakes in a śrāddha should avoid all these: a second meal, travel, exertion, sexual union, study, quarrel, and daytime sleep—always.
By this procedure, one should perform śrāddha for the three aims of life, always during the dark fortnight when the moon is in Kanyā, Kumbha, Vṛṣabha, or the signs of the stars.
Wherever an offering is to be made for the purpose of sapiṇḍīkaraṇa, there, it should always be given by one who knows the fire-rites, according to this procedure.
Now I shall declare what was spoken by Brahmā: the śrāddha called 'universal,' which bestows both enjoyment and liberation.
At the solstices, equinoxes, new moon, solar ingress, amāvāsyāṣṭakā, and on the fifteenth day of the dark fortnight—these are the times.
On the days of Ārdrā, Maghā, and Rohiṇī, when wealth and Brahmins are present; on the days of Gajacchāyā, Vyatīpāta, Viṣṭi, and Vaidhṛti.
On the third day of Vaiśākha, the ninth of Kārtika, the fifteenth of Māgha, and the thirteenth of Nabhasya.
These beginnings of the yugas are remembered as beneficial for the ancestors; likewise, at the start of a manvantara, the wise should offer śrāddha.
On the ninth of Aśvayuj, the twelfth of Kārtika, the third of Caitra, and also of Bhādrapada.
On the new moon of Phālguna, the eleventh of Pauṣa, the tenth of Āṣāḍha, and the seventh of Māgha.
On the eighth of the dark fortnight in Śrāvaṇa, the full moon of Āṣāḍha, the Kārtikī and Phālgunī full moons, and the fifteenth bright day of Jyeṣṭha.
These acts, beginning with the manvantaras, bestow inexhaustible merit upon the giver; here, even water mixed with sesame, offered with devotion by a person to the ancestors, is effective.
By this, a śrāddha is performed that brings a thousand years of benefit to the ancestors—this is a secret teaching; especially during the fasts in Vaiśākha and on the great festival of Mahālaya.
Śrāddha should be offered with understanding in holy places, temples, cow-pens, islands, gardens, houses, and in clean, secluded spots.
On the previous or following day, one should invite brāhmaṇas who are self-controlled, endowed with good conduct, character, and virtues, and who possess noble lineage and appearance.
For divine rites, two; for ancestral rites, three; or one each in both cases—thus should they be fed, even if one is very wealthy, without making the offering excessive.
Having worshipped the Viśvedevās with fresh flowers and proper seating, one should fill a pair of vessels and place them on purified darbha grass.
Reciting 'Śanno devī' one should pour water, or, reciting 'Yavosi,' barley; then, having worshipped with fragrance and flowers, one should offer them to the Viśvedevās.
Invoking the Viśvedevās with the mantras 'Viśvedevāsa' and the like, one should scatter barley, saying: 'You are the king of grains, O barley, mixed with honey and belonging to Varuṇa.'
