संभूतिस्तस्य पुत्रोभूत्त्रिधन्वा च ततोभवत्। त्रिधन्वनः सुतो जातस्त्रय्यारुण इति स्मृतः
His son was Sambhuti, and from him came Tridhanvan; Tridhanvan's son was born, known as Trayyaruna.
तस्य सत्यव्रतो नाम तस्मात्सत्यरथः स्मृतः। तस्य पुत्रो हरिश्चन्द्रो हरिश्चंद्राच्च रोहितः
His son was named Satyavrata, and from him came Satyaratha; his son was Harishchandra, and from Harishchandra came Rohita.
रोहताच्च वृको जातो वृकाद्बाहुरजायत। सगरस्तस्य पुत्रोभूद्राजा परमधार्मिकः
From Rohita was born Vrka, and from Vrka came Bahu; Sagara, a supremely righteous king, was Bahu's son.
द्वे भार्ये सगरस्यापि प्रभा भानुमती तथा। ताभ्यामाराधितः पूर्वमौर्वाग्निः पुत्रकाम्यया
Sagara too had two wives, Prabha and Bhanumati; both worshipped the sage Aurva with desire for sons.
और्वस्तुष्टस्तयोः प्रादाद्यथेष्टं वरमुत्तमम्। एका षष्टिसहस्राणि सुतमेकं तथापरा
Aurva, being pleased, granted them each a supreme boon as they wished: one bore sixty thousand sons, the other a single son.
अगृह्णाद्वंशकर्तारं प्रभाऽगृह्णाद्बहून्सुतान्। एकं भानुमती पुत्रमगृह्णादसमंजसं
One, Prabha, accepted the progenitor of the line; Bhanumati accepted many sons, and she bore a son named Asamanjasa.
ततः षष्टिसहस्राणि सुषुवे यादवी प्रभा। खनंतः पृथिवीं दग्धा विष्णुना ये ऽश्वमार्गणे
Then Prabha, of the Yadava line, gave birth to sixty thousand sons, who, digging the earth in search of the horse, were burned by Vishnu.
असमंजस्तु तनयो ह्यंशुमान्नाम विश्रुतः। तस्य पुत्रो दिलीपस्तु दिलीपात्तु भगीरथः
Asamanjasa's son was the famed Amshuman; his son was Dilipa, and from Dilipa came Bhagiratha.
येन भागीरथी गङ्गा तपः कृत्वावतारिता। भगीरथस्य तनयो नाभाग इति विश्रुतः१५० 1.8.
He by whose austerity the Bhagirathi Ganga was brought down, the son of Bhagiratha, is renowned as Nabhaga.
नाभागस्यांबरीषोभूत्सिंधुद्वीपस्ततोभवत्। तस्यायुतायुः पुत्रोभूदृतुपर्णस्ततोभवत्
From Nabhaga was born Ambarisha, then Sindhudvipa came from him; his son was Ayutayu, and from him was born Rituparna.
तस्य कल्माषपादस्तु सर्वकर्मा ततः स्मृतः। तस्यानरण्यः पुत्रोभून्निघ्नस्तस्य सुतोभवत्
His son was Kalmashapada, remembered as Sarvakarma; his son was Anaranya, and Nighna was the son of Anaranya.
निघ्नपुत्रावुभौ जातावनमित्र रघूत्तमौ। अनमित्रो वनमगादरिनाशकृते नृप
Nighna had two sons, both renowned among the best of the Raghu line: Anamitra and another; Anamitra entered the forest to destroy enemies, O king.
रघोरभूद्दिलीपस्तु दिलीपाच्चाप्यजस्तथा। दीर्घबाहुरजाज्जातः प्रजापालस्ततोभवत्
From Raghu was born Dilipa, and from Dilipa, Aja; from Aja was born Dirghabahu, and from him came Prajapala.
ततो दशरथो जातस्तस्य पुत्रचतुष्टयं। नारायणात्मकाः सर्वे रामस्तस्याग्रजोभवत्
Then Dasharatha was born, who had four sons, all of whom were of the nature of Narayana; among them, Rama was the eldest.
रावणांतकरस्तद्वद्रघूणां वंशवर्द्धनः। वाल्मीकिर्यस्य चरितं चक्रे भार्गवसत्तमः
He was the destroyer of Ravana and the increaser of the Raghu lineage; Valmiki, the best of the Bhargavas, composed his story.
तस्य पुत्रः कुशो नाम इक्ष्वाकुकुलवर्द्धनः। अतिथिस्तु कुशाज्जातो निषधस्तस्य चात्मजः
His son was named Kusha, who increased the Ikshvaku lineage; from Kusha was born Atithi, and his son was Nishadha.
नलस्तु निषधाज्जातो नभास्तस्मादजायत। नभसः पुंडरीकोभूत्क्षेमधन्वा ततः परम्
From Nishadha was born Nala, and from Nala came Nabhaga; from Nabhaga was born Pundarika, and from him Kshemadhanvan.
तस्यपुत्रोभवद्वीरो देवानीकः प्रतापवान्। अहीनगुस्तस्य सुतः सहस्राश्वस्ततः परः
His son was the heroic and powerful Devanika; his son was Ahinagu, and from him came Sahasrashva.
ततश्चंद्रावलोकस्तु तारापीडस्ततोभवत्। तस्यात्मजश्चन्द्रगिरिश्चंद्रस्तस्य सुतोभवत्
Then came Chandravaloka, and from him Tarapida; his son was Chandragiri, and from him was born Chandra.
श्रुतायुरभवत्तस्माद्भारते यो निपातितः। नलौ द्वावेव विख्यातौ वंशे यस्य विशेषतः
From him was born Shrutayu, who was slain in the Bharata war; in his lineage, two Nalas were especially renowned.
वीरसेनसुतस्तद्वन्नैषधश्च नराधिपः। एते विवस्वतो वंशे राजानो भूरिदक्षिणाः
The son of Virasena was likewise Naisadha, a lord of men; these kings of generous gifts belonged to the lineage of Vivasvat.
इक्ष्वाकुवंशप्रभवाः प्राधान्येन प्रकीर्तिताः
These, originating from the Ikshvaku lineage, have been mentioned as the foremost.
भीष्म उवाच। भगवन्श्रोतुमिच्छामि पितॄणां वंशमुत्तमम्। रवेश्च श्राद्धदेवस्य सोमस्य च विशेषतः
Bhishma said: O Lord, I wish to hear about the supreme lineage of the Pitrs, and especially about Ravi, the god of the Sraddha, and Soma.
पुलस्त्य उवाच। हंत ते कथयिष्यामि पितॄणां वंशमुत्तमम्। स्वर्गे पितृगणाः सप्त त्रयस्तेषाममूर्तयः
Pulastya said: Well then, I will tell you about the supreme lineage of the Pitrs; in heaven, there are seven groups of Pitrs, of which three are formless.
मूर्तिमंतोथ चत्वारः सर्वेषाममितौजसां। अमूर्त्तयः पितृगणा वैराजस्य प्रजापतेः
And four are embodied, all possessing immense energy; the formless groups of Pitrs belong to Prajapati Vairaja.
यजन्ति यान्देवगणा वैराजा इति विश्रुताः। ये वै ते योगविभ्रष्टाः प्रापुर्लोकान्सनातनान्
The groups of gods who worship them are known as Vairajas; those who fell from yoga attained those eternal worlds.
पुनर्ब्रह्मदिनांते तु जायंते ब्रह्मवादिनः। संप्राप्य तां स्मृतिं भूयो योगं सांख्यमनुत्तमम्
At the end of another cycle of Brahma, the knowers of Brahman are born again; having attained that remembrance, they once more pursue the supreme Yoga and Sāṃkhya.
सिद्धिं प्रयांति योगेन पुनरावृत्तिदुर्ल्लभाम्। योगिनामेव देयानि तस्माच्छाद्धानि दातृभिः
Through Yoga, they achieve a rare perfection, difficult to return from; therefore, gifts should be given faithfully only to yogis by donors.
एतेषां मानसी कन्या पत्नी हिमवतो मता। मैनाकस्तस्य दायादः क्रौचस्तस्य सुतोभवत्
Among these, Himavat is regarded as having a mental daughter as his wife; Maināka was his heir, and Krauca became his son.
क्रौंचद्वीपः स्मृतो येन चतुर्थो धृतसंयुतः। मेना तु सुषवे तिस्रः कन्या योगवतीस्ततः
Krauca, who was the fourth and steadfast, gave his name to Kraucadvīpa; Menā bore three daughters to Suṣa, all endowed with Yoga.
