Protect my children with a mother's affection; having said 'so be it,' that virtuous lady went to the god, desiring union.
The god, too, desired her, thinking 'she is Saṃjñā,' with respect; she gave birth to Sāvarṇi Manu, who bore the form of Manu.
Because of his similarity in class, he was called Sāvarṇi, the son of Vaivasvata Manu; then, in due order, she bore the daughters Tapatī and the daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ.
In Chāyā, the Sun begot a son named Saṃjñeya; Chāyā then showed greater affection for her own son than for Manu.
Manu, the elder, could not tolerate this; Yama, overcome by anger, threatened her then, raising his right foot.
Chāyā cursed Yama, saying, 'Let this foot of yours be afflicted with worms, and let it alone ooze with pus and blood.'
Yama, distressed by the curse, reported to his father: 'O god, I have been cursed by my mother without cause, in anger.'
'Because of my childishness, I only once raised my foot a little; even though Manu tried to restrain me, she gave me this curse, O lord.'
'She is not truly our mother, for her affection is not equal to ours.' The god then said again to Yama, 'What can I do, O wise one?'
'Who does not experience suffering for the sake of happiness? Or, perhaps, it is the chain of actions; if even for beings like you it cannot be avoided, what of others?'
'At your foot, a crow will eat the worm; this foot will become both lame and disfigured.'
Thus addressed, he was reassured and undertook severe austerity; out of detachment, at the sacred Puṣkara, he lived on fruits, foam, and air.
Having worshipped the Grandfather for ten thousand years, by the power of his austerity, the lord of gods, Padmabhu, was satisfied.
He asked for the office of guardian of the world, the imperishable realm of the ancestors, and the authority to judge the world, which is composed of righteousness and unrighteousness.
Thus, from Padmabhu he attained the position of world-guardian, lordship over the ancestors, and authority over righteousness and unrighteousness, O sinless one.
Then Vivasvān, knowing the actions of Saṃjñā, went to Tvaṣṭṛ and, filled with anger, spoke to him.
Then Tvaṣṭṛ spoke these words to him, first with gentle speech: 'O blessed one, your radiance, dispeller of darkness, was unbearable to her.'
'Assuming the form of a mare, she came to me here; I restrained her, O lord of the day, because of fear of you.'
Because you have come here to me with an unrecognized mind, you are therefore not worthy to enter my dwelling.
Thus addressed, she swiftly went to the desert region, unblemished, taking the form of a mare and stood upon the earth.
Therefore, show me your favor if I am worthy of your grace; I will remove your radiance, placing the Sun in a machine.
I will make your form, O Lord, a source of joy for the worlds; thus spoken to, the Sun, bewildered, agreed.
He separated his radiance, fashioned the discus of Vishnu, the trident of Rudra, and another, the thunderbolt of Indra.
Tvaṣṭṛ then made an incomparable form, destroyer of Daityas and Dānavas, composed of a thousand rays, except for the feet, which were great.
No one was able to behold again the foot-form of the Sun; even today, therefore, no one should ever make the feet.
Whoever does so is most sinful, attains a condemned state, contracts leprosy, and is known among people as afflicted with suffering.
Therefore, one seeking virtue, desire, or wealth should never, anywhere, make the feet of the wise Lord of gods in images or shrines.
Then that blessed Lord, the king of the immortals, went to the earthly world; overcome by desire, the Sun longed for her face.
Assuming the form of a horse, endowed with great radiance, Saṃjñā, agitated in her mind and overcome by fear, was disturbed.
Suspecting that what was emitted from her nostrils was foreign, it is said that from her seed the Aśvins were born.
