तामसस्य सुताः सर्वे दशवंशविवर्द्धनाः। पंचमस्य मनोस्तद्वद्रैवतस्यांतरं शृणु
All the sons of Tāmasa, ten in number, increased the lineage; now hear of the interval of the fifth Manu, Raivata.
देवबाहुः सुबाहुश्च पर्ज्यन्यः समयोमुनिः। हिरण्यरोमा सप्ताश्वः सप्तैते ऋषयः स्मृताः
Devabāhu, Subāhu, Parjanya, Samayo the sage, Hiraṇyaroma, and Saptāśva—these seven are remembered as sages.
देवाश्च भूतरजसस्तथा प्रकृतयः स्मृताः। अवशस्तत्वदर्शी च वीतिमान्हव्यपः कपिः
The gods were known as the Bhūtarajas, and the Prakṛtis are remembered; Avaśa, Tatvadarśin, Vītimān, Havyapa, and Kapi.
मुक्तो निरुत्सुकः सत्वो निर्मोहोथ प्रकाशकः। धर्मवीर्यबलोपेता दशैते रेवतात्मजाः१०० 1.7.
Mukta, Nirutsuka, Satva, Nirmoha, and Prakāśaka; endowed with righteousness, heroism, and strength—these ten were the sons of Revata.
भृगुः सुधामा विरजः सहिष्णुर्नारदस्तथा। विवस्वान्कृतिनामा च सप्त सप्तर्षयोपरे
Bhṛgu, Sudhāmā, Viraja, Sahiṣṇu, Nārada, Vivasvān, and Kṛti by name—these seven were the Seven Sages.
चाक्षुषस्यांतरे देवा लेखानामपरिश्रुताः। विभवोथ पृथक्चानु कीर्तितास्त्रिदिवौकसः
In the interval of Cākṣuṣa, the gods were known as the Lekhas, not widely famed; Vibhava and Pṛthakcānu are named among the dwellers of heaven.
चाक्षुषस्यांतरे प्राप्ते देवानां पंचमो जनः। रुरुप्रभृतयस्तद्वच्चाक्षुषस्य सुता दश
When the interval of the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara arrived, there was a fifth group of gods; likewise, Ruru and others, ten sons of Cākṣuṣa, are mentioned.
प्रोक्ताः स्वायंभुवे वंशे ये मया पूर्वमेव ते। अन्तरं चाक्षुषं चैव मया ते परिकीर्तितं
Those whom I have already described as belonging to the lineage of Svāyambhuva, and the interval of Cākṣuṣa, have been recounted by me.
सप्तमं च प्रवक्ष्यामि यद्वैवस्वतमुच्यते। अत्रिश्चैव वसिष्ठश्च कश्यपो गौतमस्तथा
Now I shall speak of the seventh, which is called Vaivasvata: Atri, Vasiṣṭha, Kaśyapa, and Gautama,
भारद्वाजस्तथा योगी विश्वामित्रः प्रतापवान्। जमदग्निश्च सप्तैते सांप्रतं ते महर्षयः
Bhāradvāja, the yogi, Viśvāmitra the mighty, and Jamadagni—these seven are the great sages of the present time.
कृत्वा धर्मव्यवस्थानं प्रयान्ति परमं पदं। सावर्ण्यस्य प्रवक्ष्यामि मनोर्भावि तथांतरं
Having established the order of righteousness, they attain the supreme state; I shall now speak of the future interval of Sāvarṇi Manu.
अश्वत्थामा शरद्वांश्च कौशिको गालवस्तथा। शतानंदः काश्यपश्च रामश्च ऋषय स्मृताः
Aśvatthāman, Śaradvān, Kauśika, Gālava, Śatānanda, Kāśyapa, and Rāma are remembered as the sages.
धृतिर्वरीयान्यवसुः सुवर्णो धृतिरेव च। वरिष्णुवीर्यः सुमतिर्वसुश्शुक्रश्च वीर्यवान्
Dhṛti, Varīyān, Yavasu, Suvarṇa, Dhṛti again, Variṣṇuvīrya, Sumati, Vasu, and Śukra the mighty—
भविष्यस्यार्कसावर्णेर्मनोः पुत्राः प्रकीर्तिताः। रौच्यादयस्तथान्येपि मनवः संप्रकीर्तिताः
These are declared as the sons of the future Manu, Arka Sāvarṇi; and others such as Raucyā and the rest are also named as Manus.
रुचेः प्रजापतेः पुत्रो रौच्यो नाम भविष्यति। मनुर्भूतिसुतस्तद्वद्भौत्यो नाम भविष्यति
Ruci, the lord of creatures, will have a son named Raucyā; and Manu, son of Bhūti, will likewise be known as Bhautyā.
ततस्तु मेरुसावर्णिर्ब्रह्मसुनुर्मनुः स्मृतः। ऋभुश्च ॠतुधामा च विष्वक्सेनो मनुस्तथा
Then Merusāvarṇi, the son of Brahmā, is remembered as Manu; Ṛbhu, Ṛtudhāmā, and Viṣvaksena are also Manus.
अतीतानागताश्चैव मनवः परिकीर्तिताः। वर्षाणां युगसाहस्रमेभिर्व्याप्तं नराधिप
Both past and future Manus have been described; by these, a thousand ages are encompassed, O king.
स्वेस्वेन्तरे सर्वमिदं समुत्पाद्य चराचरं। कल्पक्षये निवृत्ते तु मुच्यंते ब्रह्मणा सह
In each interval, all this—moving and unmoving—is produced; but at the end of a kalpa, when dissolution comes, all are released along with Brahmā.
अमीयुगसहस्रान्ते विनश्यन्ति पुनःपुनः। ब्रह्माद्या विष्णुसायुज्यं ततो यास्यंति वै नृप
At the end of these thousands of ages, Brahmā and the others perish again and again; then, O king, they attain union with Viṣṇu.
भीष्म उवाच। बहुभिर्द्धरणी भुक्ता भूपालैः श्रूयते पुरा। पार्थिवाः पृथिवीयोगात्पृथिवी कस्य योगतः
Bhīṣma said: It is heard that the earth was enjoyed by many kings in ancient times; O lord, since the kings are gone, to whom does the earth now belong?
किमर्थं च कृता संज्ञा भूमेस्सा पारिभाषिकी। गौरितीयं च संज्ञा वा भुवः कस्माद्ब्रवीहि मे
And for what reason was this technical name 'Bhūmi' given to the earth? And why is she also called 'Gaurī'? Tell me the reason for these names.
पुलस्त्य उवाच। पुरा कृतयुगस्यासीदंगो नाम प्रजापतिः। मृत्योस्तु दुहिता तेन परिणीतातिदुर्मुखी
Pulastya said: In the earliest age, there was a lord of creatures named Aṅga; he married the daughter of Death, who was exceedingly ill-favored.
सुनीथा नाम तस्यास्तु वेनो नाम सुतः पुरा। अधर्मनिरतः कामी बलवान्वसुधाधिपः
She had a son named Vena, who was a powerful ruler of the earth, devoted to unrighteousness and desire.
लोकस्याधर्मकृच्चापि परभार्यापहारकः। अथ तस्य प्रसिद्यर्थं जगदर्थं महर्षिभिः
He committed unrighteous deeds and abducted the wives of others; then, for the sake of his appeasement and for the good of the world, the great sages—
अनुनीतोपि न ददावशुद्धात्माऽभयं ततः। शापेन मारयित्वैनमराजकभयार्दिताः
Even when entreated, that pure-hearted one did not grant safety; then, afflicted by the fear of the king, he killed him with a curse.
ममंथुर्ब्राह्मणास्तस्य बलाद्देहमकल्मषाः। तत्कायान्मथ्यमानात्तु जनिता म्लेच्छजातयः
The sinless Brahmins forcibly churned his body; from the churning of that body, the races of Mlecchas were born.
शरीरे मातुरंशेन कृष्णांजनसमप्रभाः। पितुरंशस्य संगेन धार्मिको धर्मकारकः
From the mother's portion in the body, beings with a complexion like black collyrium arose; by the union with the father's portion, a righteous one, a doer of dharma, was born.
उत्पन्नो दक्षिणाद्धस्तात्सधनुः सशरो गदी। दिव्यतेजोमयः पुत्रस्सरत्नकवचांगदः
From the right hand was born a son, armed with bow and arrow and mace, radiant with divine splendor, adorned with a jewel armor and bracelets.
पृथुरेवाभवन्नाम्ना स च विष्णुरजायत। स विप्रैरभिषिक्तः संस्तपः कृत्वा सुदुष्करं
He became known by the name Prithu, and he was born as Vishnu; consecrated by the Brahmins, he performed a most difficult austerity.
विष्णोर्वरेण सर्वस्य प्रभुत्वमगमत्प्रभुः। निःस्वाध्यायवषट्कारं निर्द्धर्मं वीक्ष्य भूतलं
By the boon of Vishnu, the lord attained sovereignty over all; seeing the earth devoid of recitation and oblation, and bereft of dharma,
