हंस सारस कारंड प्लवान्शुचिरजीजनत्। एते ताम्रासुताः प्रोक्ता विनताया निशामय
Śuci gave birth to swans, cranes, kāraṇḍas, and waterfowl; these are declared the daughters of Tāmrā. Listen now of Vinatā.
गरुडः पतगश्रेष्ठोऽरुणश्चेशः पतत्रिणाम्। सौदामिनी तथा कन्या येयं नभसि विश्रुता
Garuḍa, the foremost of birds, and Aruṇa, lord of the winged; Saudāminī, the maiden famed in the sky.
संपातिश्च जटायुश्च अरुणस्य सुतावुभौ। संपातिपुत्रो बभ्रुश्च शीघ्रगश्चातिविश्रुतः
Saṃpāti and Jaṭāyu, both sons of Aruṇa; Saṃpāti's son was Babhru, and Śīghraga, renowned.
जटायोः कर्णिकारश्च शतगामी च विश्रुतौ। तेषामसंख्यमभवत्पक्षिणां पुत्रपौत्रकम्
Jaṭāyu's sons were Karṇikāra and Śatagāmī, both celebrated; their offspring and descendants among birds were countless.
सुरसायां सहस्रं तु सर्पाणामभवत्पुरा। सहस्रशिरसां कद्रूः सहस्रं प्राप सुव्रता
From Surasā, a thousand serpents arose in ancient times; Kadru, of virtuous vows, obtained a thousand multi-headed ones.
प्रधानास्तेषु विख्याता ष्षड्विंशतिररिन्दम। शेषवासुकिकर्कोट शंखैरावतकंबलाः
Among them, twenty-six are renowned as chiefs: Śeṣa, Vāsuki, Karkoṭa, Śaṃkha, Airāvata, Kaṃbala.
धनंजय महानील पद्माश्वतर तक्षकाः। एलापत्र महापद्म धृतराष्ट्र बलाहकाः
Dhanaṃjaya, Mahānīla, Padma, Aśvatara, Takṣaka, Elāpatra, Mahāpadma, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and Balāhaka.
शंखपाल महाशंख पुष्पदंष्ट्रं शुभाननाः। शंखरोमा च नहुषो रमणः पणिनस्तथा
Śaṃkhapāla, Mahāśaṃkha, Puṣpadaṃṣṭra, those with auspicious faces; Śaṃkharoma, Nahuṣa, Ramaṇa, and Paṇi.
कपिलो दुर्मुखश्चापि पतंजलिमुखास्तथा। एषामनंतमभवत्सर्वेषां पुत्रपौत्रकम्
Kapila, Durmukha, and also Patanjali and others—these all had countless sons and grandsons.
प्रायशो यत्पुरादग्धं जनमेजयमंदिरे। रक्षोगणं क्रोधवशा सुनामानमजीजनत्
Mostly, what was previously burned in the house of Janamejaya, the host of rakṣasas, was born again by Sunaman out of anger.
दंष्ट्रिणां नियुतं तेषां भीमसेनादगात्क्षयम्। दंष्ट्रि गोमायु काकादीन्महिषीर्गोवराङ्गनाः
Of the fanged ones, a multitude was destroyed by Bhimasena; the fanged ones, jackals, crows, and others, as well as buffaloes and cows, and cow-maidens.
सुरभिर्जनयामास कश्यपात्त्त्रितयं पुरा। मुनिर्मुनीनां च गणं गणमप्सरसां तथा
Surabhi once gave birth from Kashyapa to three kinds: a group of sages, a host of sages, and also a group of apsarases.
तथा किन्नरगंधर्वानरिष्टा जनयद्बहून्। तृणवृक्षलता गुल्ममिरा सर्वमजीजनतत्
In the same way, Irā gave birth to many kinnaras and gandharvas, and all the grasses, trees, creepers, and bushes.
खसा तु यक्षरक्षांसि जनयामास कोटिशः। एते कश्यपदायादाः शतशोथ सहस्रशः
Khasā gave birth to yakṣas and rakṣasas by the crore; these are the descendants of Kashyapa, by the hundreds and thousands.
एष मन्वंतरे भीष्म सर्गः स्वारोचिषे स्मृतः। ततस्त्वेकोनपंचाशन्मरुतः कश्यपाद्दितिः। जनयामास धर्मज्ञ सर्वानमरवल्लभान्
O Bhishma, in this Manvantara, this creation is known as the Svārociṣa; then Diti, knowing dharma, gave birth from Kashyapa to forty-nine Maruts, all dear to the gods.
भीष्म उवाच। दितेः पुत्राः कथं जाता मरुतो देववल्लभाः। देवैर्जग्मुश्च सापत्नैः कस्मात्सख्यमनुत्तमम्
Bhishma said: How were the sons of Diti, the Maruts beloved of the gods, born? And why did they attain the highest friendship with the gods, though they were rivals?
पुलस्त्य उवाच। पुरा दैवासुरे युद्धे हतेषु हरिणा सुरैः। पुत्रपौत्रेषु शोकार्ता गता भूलोकमुत्तमम्
Pulastya said: Long ago, in the war between gods and asuras, when her sons and grandsons were slain by Hari and the gods, Diti, afflicted by grief, went to the highest earthly realm.
पुष्करेषु महातीर्थे सरस्वत्यास्तटे शुभे। भर्त्तुराराधनपरा तप उग्रं चचार ह
At the great holy place of Pushkara, on the auspicious bank of the Sarasvati, she devoted herself to worshiping her husband and performed severe austerities.
दितिर्वै दैत्यमाता तु ऋषिकार्येण सुव्रता। फलाहारा तपस्तेपे कृच्छ्रचांद्रायणादिभिः
Diti, the mother of the Daityas, steadfast in her vows, lived on fruits and performed austerities with difficult observances like Kṛcchra and Cāndrāyaṇa.
यावद्वर्षशतं साग्रं जराशोकसमाकुला। ततः सा तपसा तप्ता वसिष्ठादीनपृच्छत
For a hundred years and more, troubled by old age and sorrow, she performed austerities; then, scorched by her penance, she questioned Vasiṣṭha and the others.
कथयंतु भवंतो मे पुत्रशोकविनाशनम्। व्रतं सौभाग्यफलदमिहलोके परत्र च
She said, 'Let your honors tell me a vow that destroys grief for sons, and brings the fruit of good fortune in this world and the next.'
ऊचुर्वसिष्ठप्रमुखा ज्येष्ठस्य पूर्णिमाव्रतम्। यस्य प्रसादादभवत्सुतशोकविवर्जिता
Vasiṣṭha and the others replied: 'The Pūrṇimā vow of the full moon in Jyeṣṭha month, by whose grace one becomes free from grief for sons.'
भीष्म उवाच। श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं ब्रह्मन्ज्येष्ठस्य पूर्णिमाव्रतम्। सुतानेकोनपंचाशद्येन लेभे पुनर्दितिः
Bhishma said: I wish to hear, O Brahman, the Pūrṇimā vow of Jyeṣṭha, by which Diti obtained forty-nine sons again.
पुलस्त्य उवाच। यद्वसिष्ठादिभिः पूर्वं दित्यै संकथितं व्रतम्। विस्तरेण तदेवेदं मत्सकाशान्निशामय
Pulastya said: That vow which was formerly described to Diti by Vasiṣṭha and the others, hear that in detail now from me.
ज्येष्ठे मासि सिते पक्षे पौर्णमास्यां यतव्रता। स्थापयेदव्रणं कुंभं सिततण्डुलपूरितम्
In the bright fortnight of the month of Jyeṣṭha, on the full moon, one observing the vow should set up an unbroken pot filled with white rice.
नानाफलयुतं तद्वदिक्षुदंडसमन्वितम्। सितवस्त्रयुगच्छन्नंसितचंदनचर्चितम्
That pot should be adorned with various fruits, sugarcane sticks, covered with a pair of white cloths, and anointed with white sandalwood.
नानाभक्ष्यसमोपेतं सहिरण्यं तु शक्तितः। ताम्रपात्रं गुडोपेतं तस्योपरि निवेशयेत्
Arrange various foods together with gold as able; place a copper vessel filled with jaggery on top of it.
तस्मादुपरि ब्रह्माणं सौवर्णं पद्मकोटरे। कुर्यात्शर्करयोपेतां सावित्रीं तस्य वामतः
Above that, in a lotus-shaped cavity, make an image of Brahma in gold; place the Savitri, adorned with sugar, to its left.
गंधंधूपं तयोर्दद्याद्गीतं वाद्यं च कारयेत्। तदभावे कथं कुर्याद्यथा पद्मे पितामहः
Offer fragrance and incense to both, and arrange singing and instrumental music; if these are lacking, perform as was done for the lotus by the Grandfather.
ब्रह्माह्वयां च प्रतिमां कृत्वा गुडमयीं शुभाम्। शुक्लपुष्पाक्षततिलैरर्चयेत्पद्मसंभवम्
Fashion a beautiful image called Brahma from jaggery, and worship the lotus-born one with white flowers, uncooked rice, and sesame seeds.
