गणैर्नानाविधैर्घोरैर्नानाभूषणभूषितैः। नानावदनदंतौष्ठैर्नाना प्रहरणोद्यतैः
With hosts of various fierce forms, adorned with diverse ornaments, with many mouths and teeth, and each brandishing different weapons,
नाना नागेंद्रसंदष्ट जटाभारोपशोभितैः। सुदृढोद्धत दर्पाढ्यैर्घोरैर्घोरनिघातिभिः
With matted locks adorned by the bites of many king serpents, strong, arrogant, and terrible, dreadful in their destructive power,
कामरूपैरकांतैश्च सर्वकामसमन्वितैः। अनिवार्यबलैश्चोग्रैर्योगिभिर्योगगामिभिः
With forms assuming any shape at will, some unattractive, all endowed with every desire, irresistible in might, fierce, yogis and masters of yoga,
व्यालोलकेसरजटैर्दंष्ट्रोत्कटहसन्मुखैः। करींद्रकरटाटोप पाटवैः सिंहदेहिभिः
With manes and matted hair tossing wildly, faces fierce with protruding fangs, displaying the strength and agility of elephants and lions,
केचित्परमदाघ्राण घूर्णद्दीपसमप्रभैः। विचित्रचित्रवसनैर्द्धीरधीरवारदिभिः
Some, intoxicated by strong drink, shining like flickering lamps, dressed in strange and varied garments, both calm and wild as elephants,
मृगव्याघ्रसिंहरुतैस्तरक्ष्वजिनधारिभिः। भुजंगहारवलयकृतयज्ञोपवीतकैः
Roaring like deer, tigers, and lions, clad in tiger and bear skins, wearing serpents as garlands and bracelets, with sacred threads made of snakes,
शूलासिपट्टिशधरैः परशुप्रासहस्तकैः। वज्रक्रकचकोदंडकालदंडास्त्रपाणिभिः
Armed with tridents, swords, spears, axes, and javelins, holding thunderbolts, clubs, maces, rods of Time, and other weapons,
गणेश्वरैः सुदुर्द्धर्षैर्वृतः सूर्यो ग्रहैरिव। देवदेवमहादेव नष्टो यज्ञो दिवं गतः
Surrounded by indomitable chiefs of the Gaṇas, like the sun by planets, O god of gods, great god, the sacrifice was destroyed and ascended to heaven.
मृगरूपधरो भूत्वा भयभीतस्तु शंकर। नमः शङ्खाभदेवाय सगणाय सनंदिने
Having assumed the form of a deer, terrified, O Śaṃkara, salutations to the god adorned with a conch, together with his attendants and with Sanandana.
वृषासनाय सोमाय क्रतुकालांतकाय च। नमो दिक्चर्मवस्त्राय नमस्ते तीव्रतेजसे
Salutations to the one seated upon the bull, to Soma, and to the one who ends the time of sacrifices; salutations to the one clothed in the hide of directions, salutations to the one of intense brilliance.
ब्रह्मणे ब्रह्मदेहाय ब्रह्मण्यायामिताय च। गिरीशाय सुरेशाय ईशानाय नमोनमः
Salutations to Brahman, to the one whose body is Brahman, to the supporter of Brahman, to the immeasurable one; to the lord of the mountains, to the lord of the gods, to the supreme lord, repeated salutations.
रुद्राय प्रतिवज्राय शिवाय क्रथनाय च। सुरासुराधिपतये यतीनां पतये नमः
Salutations to Rudra, to the one who counters thunderbolts, to Śiva, and to the one who tears asunder; to the lord of gods and demons, to the lord of ascetics, salutations.
धूम्रोग्राय विरूपाय यज्वने घोररूपिणे। विरूपाक्षाशुभाक्षाय सहस्राक्षाय वै नमः
Salutations to the smoky and fierce one, to the deformed one, to the sacrificer, to the one of terrifying form; to the deformed-eyed, to the inauspicious-eyed, and indeed to the thousand-eyed one.
मुंडाय चंडमुण्डाय वरखट्वाङ्गधारिणे। कव्यरूपाय हव्याय सर्वसंहारिणे नमः
Salutations to the skull-bearer, to the fierce-skull-bearer, to the bearer of the excellent club; to the one of the form of oblations, to the one who receives offerings, to the destroyer of all.
भक्तानुकंपिनेत्यर्थं रुद्रजाप्यस्तुताय च। विरूपाय सुरूपाय रूपाणां शतकारिणे
Salutations to the one who is compassionate to devotees, who is praised by the recitation of Rudra, to the deformed one, to the beautiful one, to the maker of a hundred forms.
पंचास्याय शुभास्याय चंद्रास्याय नमो नमः। वरदाय वरार्हाय कूर्माय च मृगाय च
Salutations to the five-faced one, to the auspicious-faced one, to the moon-faced one, repeated salutations; to the giver of boons, to the one worthy of boons, to the tortoise, and to the deer.
लीलालकशिखंडाय कमंडलुधराय च। विश्वनाम्नेथ विश्वाय विश्वेशाय नमोनमः
Salutations to the one whose locks are adorned playfully, to the bearer of the water-pot; to the one named Viśva, to the all-pervading one, to the lord of the universe, repeated salutations.
त्रिनेत्रत्राणमस्माकं त्रिपुरघ्नविधीयतां। वाङ्मनः कायभावैस्तु प्रपन्नस्य महेश्वर
O three-eyed one, may your protection be granted to us; O destroyer of the triple city, by the devotion of speech, mind, and body, O great lord, from the one who has taken refuge.
एवं स्तुतस्तदा देवो दक्षेणापन्नदेहिना। दिव्येनानेन स्तोत्रेण भृशमाराधितस्तदा
Thus praised at that time by Dakṣa, who was afflicted in body, the god was thoroughly worshipped by this divine hymn.
समग्रं ते यज्ञफलं मया दत्तं प्रजापते। सर्वकामप्रसिर्द्ध्य्थंफलंप्राप्स्यस्यनुत्तमम्
I have given you the entire fruit of the sacrifice, O lord of creatures; you will obtain the supreme fruit, fulfilling all desires.
एवमुक्तो भगवता प्रणम्याथ सुरेश्वरम्। जगाम स्वनिकेतं तु गणानामेव पश्यताम्
Having been thus addressed by the blessed one, Dakṣa bowed to the lord of the gods and then departed to his own abode, as the hosts looked on.
पत्न्याः शोकेन वै देवो गंगाद्वारे तदास्थितः। तां सतीं चिंतयानस्तु क्व नु सामेप्रियागता
Afflicted by grief for his wife, the god then stayed at the bank of the Ganges, thinking of Sati: 'Where has my beloved gone?'
तस्य शोकाभिभूतस्य नारदो भवसंन्निधौ। सा ते सती या देवेश भार्या प्राणसमामृता
As he was overwhelmed by sorrow, Nārada approached him in the presence of Bhava: 'That Sati, O lord of gods, who was your wife, equal to your life.'
हिमवद्दुहिता सा च मेनागर्भसमुद्भवा। जग्राह देहमन्यं सा वेदवेदार्थवेदिनी
She is the daughter of Himavat, born from Menā's womb; she assumed another body, knowing the Vedas and their meanings.
श्रुत्वा देवस्तदा ध्यानमवतीर्णामपश्यत। कृतकृत्यमथात्मानं कृत्वा देवस्तदास्थितः
Having heard this, the god then saw her, descended in meditation; having accomplished his purpose, the god remained there.
संप्राप्तयौवना देवी पुनरेव विवाहिता। एवं हि कथितं भीष्म यथा यज्ञो हतः पुरा
The goddess, having attained youth, was again married; thus, O Bhīṣma, has been told how the sacrifice was destroyed in ancient times.
भीष्म उवाच। देवानां दानवानां च गंधर्वोरगरक्षसाम्। उत्पत्तिं विस्तरेणेमां गुरो ब्रूहि यथाविधि
Bhishma said: O teacher, please explain in detail, according to proper order, the origin of the gods, the demons, the gandharvas, the serpents, and the rakshasas.
पुलस्त्य उवाच। संकल्पाद्दर्शनात्स्पर्शात्पूर्वेषां सृष्टिरुच्यते। दक्षात्प्राचेतसादूर्ध्वं सृष्टिर्मैथुनसंभवा
Pulastya said: The creation of the former beings is said to have arisen from will, sight, and touch; but after Daksha, the son of Prachetas, creation came about through sexual union.
यथा ससर्ज चैवासौ तथैव शृणु कौरव। यदा तु सृजतस्तस्य देवर्षिगणपन्नगान्
Now listen, O Kaurava, to how he created; when he was creating, he brought forth hosts of gods, sages, and serpents.
न वृद्धिमगमल्लोकस्तदा मैथुनयोगतः। दक्षः पुत्रसहस्राणि तदासिक्न्यामजीजनत्
At that time, the world did not grow through sexual union; then Daksha generated thousands of sons from his wife Asikni.
