He who is lord of life, of forests, and of days, the master of names, Bhāskara, purifier of the worlds, has arrived here.
Born in the lineage of Atri, the illustrious king of the twice-born, the lord of the world on earth, who brings joy to the eyes, is here.
The lord of herbs and of all plants, the lord of stars, the moon, has arrived here with his wife, O noble one.
The eight Vasus have arrived, and the two Aśvins have come as well; the tree and the lord of the forest, and the hosts of Gandharvas and Apsarases.
The Vidyādharas, hosts of spirits, Vetālas, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, and Piśācas, those who perform fierce deeds, and others who seize life—
Rivers, streams, oceans, and islands together with mountains; domestic and wild animals, whatever moves and whatever does not move—
Kaśyapa, the venerable Atri, Vasiṣṭha along with others; Pulastya, Pulaha, and indeed the great sages beginning with Sanaka—
The virtuous royal sages, and all the kings upon the earth; the castes and those in the stages of life, all who perform actions—
Why speak at length? The creation of Brahmā has arrived here: sisters, nephews, and the husbands of sisters—these as well.
All, together with their wives, sons, and relatives, have been honored by you with gifts, respect, and hospitality.
All those who were invited and consulted have been shown respect; yet only my lord, here, has not arrived.
Without him, all this appears empty to me; I think, indeed, that my husband was not invited by you.
He must surely have been forgotten by you; let everything be told to me by you. Pulastya spoke: Hearing her words, Dakṣa, the lord of creatures—
Filled with affection for her husband, greater even than for her own life, he placed the virtuous, devoted girl upon his lap—
The chaste, greatly fortunate one, devoted to her husband's welfare and love, he addressed with a deep voice: 'Listen, child, as it truly is.'
For what reason today your husband was not invited here: he holds a skull-bowl, wears a hide, his body is covered with ashes—
He bears a trident, is shaven-headed, naked, always delights in cremation grounds; he constantly rubs his body with sacred ash—
Clad in tiger skin, adorned with elephant hide, a garland of skulls upon his head, a club in his hand—
With cow sinew tied at his waist, a bone ring upon his organ, the king of serpents, Vāsuki, as his sacred thread—
Having assumed this form, he wanders constantly upon the earth; his attendants are naked, Piśācas, and countless hosts of spirits—
He is three-eyed, bears a trident, always delights in song and dance; your husband always performs such strange acts—
He would bring shame upon me; how could he be present among the gods? What manner of attire does he have, and he is not fit for the house.
Because of these faults, dear child, and out of shame before the worlds, I did not invite him for that reason, my daughter.
But at the completion of this sacrifice, after performing the worship together with you, I will bring your husband, the three-eyed one, here with you.
I will offer greater honor to him than to all the three worlds, with proper respect; all this I have told you is the great reason for my embarrassment.
You should not be angry about this; everyone deserves their own share. Whatever good or bad deeds were done in a previous birth—
In this birth, my daughter, you are experiencing the results of those actions. Do not be distressed; accept the fruit of what was done before.
Seeing prosperity gone elsewhere, beauty, charm, and splendid ornaments—
A noble family, an excellent birth, and a very beautiful form—these are obtained by people of good conduct through previous merit, O virtuous one.
Do not blame yourself, O virtuous one; fortunes come as they are. Who indeed is capable of giving what is allotted by fate?
