विबुधाः सहिताः सर्वे यतः पुच्छं ततः स्थिताः। विष्णुना वासुकेर्द्दैत्याः पूर्वकाये निवेशिताः
All the gods stood together at the tail of Vasuki, while, by Vishnu's arrangement, the daityas were stationed at his head.
ते तस्य प्राणवातेन वह्निना च हतत्त्विषः। निस्तेजसोऽसुराः सर्वे बभूवुरमरद्युते
Struck by the fiery breath of Vasuki, all the asuras lost their luster and became powerless, their brilliance destroyed.
तेनैव मुखनिःश्वासवायुनाथ बलाहकैः। पुच्छप्रदेशे वर्षद्भिस्तदा चाप्पयिताः सुराः
But by the wind of Vasuki's exhalation at the mouth, and by the rain from the clouds at the tail, the gods were refreshed.
क्षीरोदमध्ये भगवान्ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मविदां वरः। महादेवो महातेजा विष्णुपृष्ठनिवासिनौ
In the midst of the ocean of milk, the blessed Brahma, foremost among knowers of Brahman, and the mighty Mahadeva, both took their places on Vishnu's back.
बाहुभ्यां मंदरं गृह्य पद्मवत्स परंतपः। शृंखले च तदा कृत्वा गृहीत्वा मंदराचलम्
Seizing Mount Mandara with his arms, the lotus-born scorcher of foes fastened it with a chain and firmly grasped the mountain.
देवानां दानवानां च बलमध्ये व्यवस्थितः। क्षीरोदमध्ये भगवान्कूर्मरूपी स्वयं हरिः
Standing between the forces of gods and danavas, Hari himself, in the form of a tortoise, was present in the midst of the ocean of milk.
अन्येन तेजसा देवानुपबृंहितवान्हरिः। मथ्यमाने ततस्तस्मिन्क्षीराब्धौ देवदानवैः
With another portion of his energy, Hari strengthened the gods as the gods and danavas churned the ocean of milk.
हविर्धान्यभवत्पूर्वं सुरभिः सुरपूजिता। जग्मुर्मुदं तदा देवा दानवाश्च महामते
First arose Surabhi, the wish-fulfilling cow, revered by the gods; the gods and wise danavas rejoiced at her appearance.
व्याक्षिप्तचेतसः सर्वे बभूवुस्तिमितेक्षणाः। किमेतदिति सिद्धानां दिवि चिंतयतां तदा
All were bewildered in mind and gazed in astonishment, while the siddhas in heaven wondered, 'What is this?'
बभूव वारुणी देवी मदाघूर्णितलोचना। कृतावर्त्ता ततस्तस्मात्प्रस्खलंती पदे पदे
Then appeared the goddess Varuni, her eyes rolling with intoxication, staggering at every step.
एकवस्त्रा मुक्तकेशी रक्तांतस्तब्धलोचना। अहं बलप्रदा देवी मां वा गृह्णन्तु दानवाः
Clad in a single garment, her hair unbound, her eyes bloodshot and fixed, she declared, 'I am the goddess who grants strength; let the danavas take me.'
अशुचिं वारुणीं मत्वा त्यक्तवंतस्तदा सुराः। जगृहुस्तां तदा दैत्या ग्रहणान्तेसुराभवत्
Considering Varuni impure, the gods rejected her, but the daityas accepted her, and thus she became associated with them.
मंथने पारिजातोभूद्देव श्रीनंदनो द्रुमः। रूपौदार्य्यगुणोपेतास्ततश्चाप्सरसां गणाः५० 1.4.
From the churning arose the Parijata, the divine, auspicious tree, endowed with beauty and noble qualities; then appeared the hosts of apsaras.
षष्टिकोट्यस्तदा जातास्सामान्या देव दानवैः। सर्वास्ताः कृतपूर्वास्तु सामान्याः पुण्यकर्मणा
At that time, sixty million apsaras were born, common to both gods and danavas; all of them had been created before, and were shared by both through their meritorious deeds.
ततः शीतांशुरभवद्देवानां प्रीतिदायकः। ययाचे शंकरो देवो जटाभूषणकृन्मम
Then the moon, pleasing to the gods, arose; Shiva, the god adorned with matted locks, requested it for himself.
भविष्यति न संदेहो गृहीतोयं मया शशी। अनुमेने च तं ब्रह्मा भूषणाय हरस्य तु
'There is no doubt,' he said, 'I have taken the moon'; and Brahma approved it as an ornament for Hara.
ततो विषं समुत्पन्नं कालकूटं भयावहं। तेन चैवार्दितास्सर्वे दानवाः सह दैवतैः
Then poison arose, Kālakūṭa, terrifying; and all the Dānavas, together with the gods, were afflicted by it.
महादेवेन तत्पीतं विषं गृह्य यदृच्छया। तस्य पानान्नीलकंठस्तदा जातो महेश्वरः
That poison was drunk by Mahādeva, who took it up at will; from drinking it, Maheśvara became Nīlakaṇṭha.
पीतावशेषं नागास्तु क्षीराब्धेस्तु समुत्थितम्। ततो धन्वंतरिर्जातः श्वेतांबरधरः स्वयम्
The remainder, drunk by the Nāgas, had arisen from the ocean of milk; then Dhanvantari appeared, clad in white garments, of his own accord.
बिभ्रत्कमंडलुं पूर्णममृतस्य समुत्थितः। ततः स्वस्थमनस्कास्ते वैद्यराजस्य दर्शनात्
He emerged holding a water-pot filled with nectar; then, at the sight of the king of physicians, their minds became tranquil.
ततश्चाश्वः समुत्पन्नो नागश्चैरावतस्तथा। तत स्फुरत्कांतीमतिविकासि कमलेस्थिता
After that, a horse arose, and likewise the elephant Airāvata; then, radiant and exceedingly blossoming, one stood in the lotus.
श्रीर्द्देवी पयसस्तस्मादुत्थिता धृतपंकजा। तां तुष्टवुर्मुदायुक्ताः श्रीसूक्तेन महर्षयः
From the milk, the goddess Śrī emerged, holding a lotus; the great sages, filled with joy, praised her with the Śrī Sūkta.
विश्वावसुमुखास्तस्या गंधर्वाः पुरतो जगुः। घृताचीप्रमुखास्तत्र ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः
The Gandharvas, led by Viśvāvasu and Mukhā, sang before her; there, the groups of Apsarases, headed by Ghṛtācī, danced.
गंगाद्याः सरितस्तोयैः स्नानार्थमुपतस्थिरे। दिग्गजा हेमपात्रस्थमादाय विमलं जलम्
The rivers, beginning with Gaṅgā, approached with their waters for bathing; the elephants of the directions, taking pure water in golden vessels,
स्नापयांचक्रिरे देवीं सर्वलोकमहेश्वरीम्। क्षीरोदस्तु स्वयं तस्यै मालामम्लानपंकजाम्
bathed the goddess, the great sovereign of all worlds; and the ocean of milk itself gave her a garland of unfading lotuses.
ददौ विभूषणान्यंगे विश्वकर्मा चकार ह। दिव्यमाल्यांबरधरां स्नातां भूषणभूषिताम्
Viśvakarman gave her ornaments for her limbs; he made divine garlands and garments for her, bathed and adorned with jewels.
इंद्राद्याश्चामरगणा विद्याधरमहोरगाः। दानवाश्च महादैत्या राक्षसाः सह गुह्यकैः
Indra and others, the groups of attendants, Vidyādharas, great serpents, Dānavas, mighty Daityas, Rākṣasas together with Guhyakas,
कन्यामभिलषन्ति स्म ततो ब्रह्मा उवाच ह। वासुदेव त्वमेवैनां मया दत्तां गृहाण वै
desired the maiden; then Brahmā spoke: 'Vāsudeva, you alone should accept her, whom I have given.'
देवाश्च दानवाश्चैव प्रतिषिद्धा मया त्विह। तुष्टोहं भवतस्तावदलौल्येनेह कर्मणा
'The gods and the Dānavas have been forbidden by me here; I am pleased with you for your restraint in this act.'
सा तु श्रीर्ब्रह्मणा प्रोक्ता देवि गछस्व केशवं। मया दत्तं पतिं प्राप्य मोदस्व शाश्वतीः समाः
Then Śrī, addressed by Brahmā, said: 'O goddess, go to Keśava; having received the husband given by me, rejoice for endless ages.'
