तामृतेनैव धर्मोऽथ कामो मोक्षोऽपि दूरतः । क्षुधितानां दुर्गतानां कुतो योगसमाधयः
Only through that nectar does righteousness, desire, and even liberation come near; for the hungry and destitute, how can there be yogic concentration?
स च संसारसारैकः सर्वलोकैकनायकः । वशगा कमला यस्य त्यक्त्वा तामपि शंकरः
He is the sole essence of worldly existence, the single leader of all worlds; even Lakshmi is under his control, and Śaṅkara has renounced her.
अनौद्धत्येन शौचेन रूपेणार्जवसंपदा । सर्वातिशयवीर्येण संपूर्णस्य महात्मनः
Through humility, purity, beauty, and the wealth of sincerity, through supreme strength, the great soul is complete.
कस्तेन तुल्यतामेति देवदेवेन विष्णुना । यस्यांशांशावतारेण विना सर्वं विलीयते
Who can be equal to him, the god of gods, Viṣṇu? Without even a fraction of his manifestation, all dissolves.
जगदेतत्तथाप्याहुर्दोषायैतद्विमोहिताः । नास्य जन्म न वा मृत्युर्नाप्राप्यं स्वार्थमेव च
Yet, deluded people speak ill of this world; he has neither birth nor death, nor is anything unattainable for his own sake.
कामाद्यासक्तचित्तत्वात्किं तु सर्वेश्वरप्रभो । त्वन्मयत्वात्प्रमादाद्वा शक्नोमि पठितुं न चेत्
Due to the mind's attachment to desire and such, O Lord of all, or because of being absorbed in you, or out of negligence, I am unable to recite.
विष्णोः सहस्रनामैतत्प्रत्यहं वृषभध्वज । नाम्नैकेन तु येन स्यात्तत्फलं ब्रूहि मे प्रभो
O Bull-bannered One, this thousand names of Viṣṇu—tell me, Lord, what fruit is gained by reciting even one name daily.
महादेव उवाच- रामरामेति रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे । सहस्रनामतत्तुल्यं रामनाम वरानने
Mahādeva said: 'Rāma, Rāma, Rāma,' I delight in Rāma, the charming Rāma; the name of Rāma, O beautiful-faced one, is equal to the thousand names.
श्रीमहादेव उवाच- ब्राह्मणा वा क्षत्रिया वा वैश्या वा गिरिकन्यके । शूद्रा वाथ विशेषेण पठंत्यनुदिनं यदि
Śrī Mahādeva said: Whether a Brāhmaṇa, Kṣatriya, Vaiśya, or O daughter of the mountain, even a Śūdra—if they recite daily,
धनधान्यसमायुक्ता यांति विष्णोः परं पदम् । श्लोकं वा श्लोकमर्द्धं वा पादं पादार्द्धमेव वा
They become endowed with wealth and grain, and attain Viṣṇu's supreme abode; whether a verse, half a verse, a quarter, or even a quarter of a quarter.
पठनान्मोक्षमाप्नोति यावदाभूतसंप्लवम् । विन्यासेन युतं देवि विष्णोर्नामसहस्रकम्
By recitation, one attains liberation until the dissolution of all creation; O Devi, the thousand names of Viṣṇu are arranged thus.
ये पठंति नरश्रेष्ठास्ते यांति पदमव्ययम् । एककालं द्विकालं वा त्रिकालं वाथ यः पठेत्
Those best among men who recite attain the imperishable state; whether once, twice, or thrice daily, whoever recites.
धनायुर्वर्धते तस्य यावदिंद्राश्चतुर्दश । पुत्रान्पौत्रांस्तथालक्ष्मी संपदं विपुलां लभेत्
His wealth and lifespan increase as long as the fourteen Indras reign; he obtains sons, grandsons, and abundant prosperity.
किमन्यद्बहुनोक्तेन भूयो भूयो वरानने । विष्णोर्नामसहस्रं तु परं निर्वाणदायकम्
What more need be said, O beautiful-faced one, by repeating much? The thousand names of Viṣṇu indeed grant the highest liberation.
पूजनं प्रथमं तस्य कृतं येन नरेण तु । संपूर्णं पूजिते विष्णौ तस्य पूजा च वार्षिकी
The one by whom the worship of Him is first performed, for that man, when Viṣṇu is fully worshipped, his annual worship is accomplished.
व्यग्रत्वं च न कर्त्तव्यं पठने तु विशेषतः । यदि चेत्क्रियते पाठे ह्यायुर्वित्तं च नश्यति
One should not be inattentive, especially while reciting; if recitation is done carelessly, lifespan and wealth are lost.
यावंति भुवि तीर्थानि जंबुद्वीपेषु सर्वदा । तानि तीर्थानि तत्रैव विष्णोर्नामसहस्रकम्
As many holy places as there are on earth, throughout all the regions of Jambudvīpa, all those sacred places are present in the Thousand Names of Viṣṇu.
तत्रैव गंगा यमुना च वेणी गोदावरी तत्र सरस्वती च । सर्वाणि तीर्थानि वसंति तत्र यत्र स्थितं नामसहस्रकं तत्
There, indeed, are the Gaṅgā, Yamunā, Veṇī, Godāvarī, and Sarasvatī; all the sacred places reside there where the Thousand Names are established.
इदं पवित्रं परमं भक्तानां वल्लभं सदा । ध्येयं हि दासभावेन भक्तिभावेन चेतसा
This is pure, supreme, and always dear to devotees; it should be meditated upon with the mind in the spirit of service and devotion.
परं सहस्रनामाख्यं ये पठंति मनीषिणः । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तास्ते यांति हरिसंनिधौ
Those wise ones who recite the supreme Thousand Names become free from all sins and attain the presence of Hari.
अरुणोदयकाले तु ये पठंति जपंति च । आयुर्बलं च तेषां श्रीर्वर्द्धते च दिनेदिने
Those who recite and repeat it at the time of sunrise, their lifespan, strength, and prosperity increase day by day.
रात्रौ जागरणे प्राप्ते कलौ भागवतो नरः । पठनान्मुक्तिमाप्नोति यावदिंद्राश्चतुर्दश
At night, when wakefulness arises, if a devotee recites it in the age of Kali, he attains liberation for as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
एकैकेन तु नाम्ना वै हरौ तुलसिकारणात् । पूजा सा चैव विज्ञेया कोटियज्ञफलाधिका
Each and every name of Hari, when worshipped with Tulasī, should be known to yield a result greater than ten million sacrifices.
मार्गे च गच्छमानास्तु ये पठंति द्विजातयः । न दोषा मार्गजास्तेषां भवंति किल पार्वति
If twice-born men recite it while traveling on the road, O Pārvatī, the faults arising from the road do not affect them.
शृणु देवि प्रवक्ष्यामि माहात्म्यं केशवस्य तु । ये शृण्वंति नरश्रेष्ठास्ते पुण्याः पुण्यरूपिणः
Listen, O goddess, I will declare the greatness of Keśava; those best of men who hear it are virtuous and embodiments of merit.
इति श्रीपाद्मे महापुराणे पंचपंचाशत्साहस्र्यां संहितायामुत्तरखंडे उमापतिनारदसंवादे सहस्रनाममहिमानाम द्विसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the section of fifty-five thousand verses, in the Uttarakhaṇḍa, in the dialogue between Umāpati and Nārada, this is the seventy-second chapter named 'The Greatness of the Thousand Names.'
महादेव उवाच- ॐरामरक्षास्तोत्रस्य श्रीमहर्षिर्विश्वामित्रऋषिः । श्रीरामो देवता अनुष्टुप्छंदः । विष्णुप्रीत्यर्थे जपे विनियोगः
Mahādeva said: Om. For the Rāmarakṣā hymn, the venerable sage Viśvāmitra is the seer; Śrī Rāma is the deity; the meter is Anuṣṭubh; the recitation is for the pleasure of Viṣṇu.
अतसीपुष्पसंकाशं पीतवाससमच्युतम् । ध्यात्वा वै पुंडरीकाक्षं श्रीरामं विष्णुमव्ययम्
Meditating on Śrī Rāma Viṣṇu, lotus-eyed, imperishable, resembling the color of the flax flower, wearing yellow garments—
पातु वो हृदयं रामः श्रीकंठः कंठमेव च । नाभिं पातु मखत्राता कटिं मे विश्वरक्षकः
May Rāma protect your heart, Śrīkaṇṭha your throat; may the protector of sacrifices guard your navel, and the protector of the universe your waist.
करौ पातु दाशरथिः पादौ मे विश्वरूपधृक् । चक्षुषी पातु वै देव सीतापतिरनुत्तमः
May the son of Daśaratha protect my hands, the bearer of the universal form my feet; may the supreme Lord, husband of Sītā, protect my eyes.
