स्वधाममुचुकुंदैकनिष्कालयवनेष्टकृत् । यमुनापतिरानीत परिलीनद्विजात्मजः
Who, in his own abode, performed the unique sacrifice for Mucukunda and the Yavanas, lord of the Yamunā, who brought back the lost son of a twice-born.
श्रीदामरंकभक्तार्थभूम्यानीतेंद्रवैभवः । दुर्वृत्तशिशुपालैकमुक्तिदो द्वारकेश्वरः
Who brought the glory of Indra to earth for the sake of the devotion of Śrīdāma and Aṅka, sole giver of liberation to the wicked Śiśupāla, lord of Dvārakā.
आचांडालदिकप्राप्य द्वारकानिधिकोटिकृत् । अक्रूरोद्धवमुख्यैकभक्तस्वच्छंदमुक्तिदः
He who, accessible even to outcastes, possesses the treasures of Dvaraka multiplied countless times; who, by the devotion of Akrura and Uddhava as chief, freely bestows liberation.
सबालस्त्रीजलक्रीडामृतवापीकृतार्णवः । ब्रह्मास्त्रदग्धगर्भस्थ परीक्षिज्जीवनैककृत्
He who, with his children and wives, played in the water, making the ocean into a nectar-filled pond; who revived Parikshit, the sole survivor, from the womb scorched by the Brahmastra.
परिलीनद्विजसुतानेताऽर्जुनमदापहः । गूढमुद्राकृतिग्रस्त भीष्माद्यखिलकौरवः
He who led the sons of the twice-born who had merged away, dispelled Arjuna’s pride, and, with a hidden seal and form, subdued Bhishma and all the Kauravas.
यथार्थखंडिताशेष दिव्यास्त्रपार्थमोहहृत् । गर्भशापछलध्वस्तयादेवोर्वी भयापहः
He who, in truth, shattered all the delusions of Arjuna caused by divine weapons; who removed the fear of the earth goddess, whose distress was feigned by a curse upon her womb.
जराव्याधारिगतिदः स्मृतिमात्राखिलेष्टदः । कामदेवो रतिपतिर्मन्मथः शंबरांतकः
He who grants movement to those afflicted by old age and disease, who fulfills all desires by mere remembrance; who is Kamadeva, the lord of love, Manmatha, and destroyer of Shambara.
अनंगो जितगौरीशो रतिकांतः सदेप्सितः । पुष्पेषुर्विश्वविजयि स्मरः कामेश्वरीप्रियः
He who is bodiless, conqueror of Gauri’s lord, beloved of Rati, ever desired; wielder of the flower-arrow, victorious over all, Smara, dear to the goddess of love.
उषापतिर्विश्वकेतुर्विश्वदृप्तोऽधिपूरुषः । चतुरात्मा चतुर्व्यूहश्चतुर्युगविधायकः
He who is the lord of Ushā, the universal banner, proud of the universe, the supreme person; possessing fourfold nature, four emanations, and the arranger of the four ages.
चतुर्वेदैकविश्वात्मा सर्वोत्कृष्टांशकोटिशः । आश्रमात्मा पुराणर्षिर्व्यासः शाखासहस्रकृत्
He who is the one soul of the four Vedas, possessing countless supreme portions; the soul of all stages of life, the ancient sage, Vyasa, creator of a thousand branches.
महाभारतनिर्माता कवींद्रो बादरायणः । कृष्णद्वैपायनः सर्वपुरुषार्थैकबोधकः
He who is the composer of the Mahabharata, chief among poets, Badarayana; Krishna Dvaipayana, the sole revealer of all human goals.
वेदांतकर्ता ब्रह्मैकव्यंजकः पुरुवंशकृत् । बुद्धो ध्यानजिताशेष देवदेवो जगत्प्रियः
He who is the author of the Vedanta, the sole revealer of Brahman, the creator of noble lineages; Buddha, who conquered all through meditation, god of gods, beloved of the world.
निरायुधो जगज्जैत्रः श्रीधरो दुष्टमोहनः । दैत्यवेदबहिःकर्त्ता वेदार्थश्रुतिगोपकः
He who, weaponless, conquers the world, bearer of fortune, deluder of the wicked; who expels the Daitya Veda, and protects the meaning and hearing of the Vedas.
शौद्धोदनिर्दष्टदृष्टिः सुखदः सदसस्पतिः । यथायोग्याखिलकृपः सर्वशून्योऽखिलेष्टदः
He whose vision was seen by Shuddhodana, giver of happiness, lord of assemblies; who shows compassion to all as appropriate, who is wholly empty yet grants all desires.
चतुष्कोटिपृथक्तत्वं प्रज्ञापारमितेश्वरः । पाखंडवेदमार्गेशः पाखंडश्रुतिगोपकः
He who, in four crore distinct forms, is lord of the Perfection of Wisdom; lord of the heterodox Vedic paths, protector of the heterodox teachings.
कल्की विष्णुयशःपुत्रः कलिकालविलोपकः । समस्तम्लेच्छदुष्टघ्नः सर्वशिष्टद्विजातिकृत्
He who is Kalki, son of Vishnuyasha, destroyer of the age of Kali; slayer of all wicked foreigners, and creator of all noble twice-born.
सत्यप्रवर्त्तको देव द्विजदीर्घक्षुधापहः । अश्ववारादि रेवंतः पृथ्वीदुर्गतिनाशनः
He who, O god, is the establisher of truth, remover of the long hunger of the twice-born; who is the horseman called Revanta, destroyer of the earth’s misfortune.
सद्यः क्ष्माऽनंतलक्ष्मीकृन्नष्टनिःशेषधर्मवित् । अनंतस्वर्णयोगैक हेमपूर्णाखिलद्विजः
He who instantly bestows endless prosperity on the earth, knower of all lost dharma; who, united with infinite gold, is the twice-born filled with all gold.
असाध्यैकजगच्छास्ता विश्ववंद्यो जयध्वजः । आत्मतत्वाधिपः कर्तृश्रेष्ठो विधिरुमापतिः
He who alone is the teacher of the world in the impossible, revered by all, the banner of victory; lord of the essence of self, the foremost of creators, the ordainer, and lord of Uma.
भर्तृश्रेष्ठः प्रजेशाग्र्यो मरीचिर्जनकाग्रणीः । कश्यपो देवराजेंद्रः प्रह्लादो दैत्यराट्शशी
He who is the foremost of lords, chief among progenitors, leader of the sons of Marichi; Kashyapa, king of the gods, Prahlada, king of the Daityas, the moon.
नक्षत्रेशो रविस्तेजः श्रेष्ठः शुक्रः कवीश्वरः । महर्षिराट्भृगुर्विष्णुरादित्येशो बलिस्वराट्
The lord of the stars is the Sun; brilliance is best; Śukra is the foremost of poets; Bhṛgu is the chief of great sages; Viṣṇu is the lord of the Ādityas; Bali is the king of the Asuras.
वायुर्वह्निः शुचिः श्रेष्ठः शंकरो रुद्रराट्गुरुः । विद्वत्तमश्चित्ररथो गंधर्वाग्र्योक्षरोत्तमः
Vāyu is the wind; Agni is pure and supreme; Śaṃkara is the lord of the Rudras and the teacher; Citraratha is the foremost among the Gandharvas; Uccaiḥśravas is the best of horses.
वर्णादिरग्र्यस्त्रीगौरीशक्त्याग्र्याशीश्च नारदः । देवर्षिराट्पांडवाग्र्योऽर्जुनोवादः प्रवादराट्
Of letters, the foremost is 'A'; among women, Gaurī is supreme by her power; among sages, Nārada is chief; among the Pāṇḍavas, Arjuna is best; among discourses, the Veda is supreme.
पवनः पवनेशानो वरुणो यादसां पतिः । गंगातीर्थोत्तमोद्यूतं छलकाग्र्यं वरौषधम्
Among winds, Pavana is lord; Varuṇa is the lord of the aquatic beings; among sacred rivers, Gaṅgā is supreme; among games, dice is foremost; among deceptions, cunning is best; among herbs, the best.
अन्नं सुदर्शनोऽस्त्राग्र्यं वज्रं प्रहरणोत्तमम् । उच्चैःश्रवावाजिराज ऐरावतइभेश्वरः
Among foods, Sudarśana is best; among weapons, the thunderbolt is supreme; Uccaiḥśravas is the king of horses; Airāvata is the lord of elephants.
अरुंधत्येकपत्नीशो ह्यश्वत्थोऽशेषवृक्षराट् । अध्यात्मविद्याविद्याग्र्यः प्रणवच्छंदसां वरः
Arundhatī is the foremost of devoted wives; the Aśvattha is the lord of all trees; among spiritual sciences, knowledge of the self is supreme; among meters, Praṇava is the best.
मेरुर्गिरिपतिर्मार्गो मासाग्र्यः कालसत्तमः । दिनाद्यात्मा पूर्वसिद्धः कपिलः सामवेदराट्
Meru is the lord of mountains; the path is best among ways; among months, the best is Kāla; among days, the self is ancient and established; Kapila is the lord of the Sāma Veda.
तार्क्ष्यः खगेंद्र ऋत्वग्र्यो वसंतः कल्पपादपः । दातृश्रेष्ठः कामधेनुरार्तिघ्नाग्र्य सुहृत्तमः
Tārkṣya is the king of birds; among seasons, spring is best; among wish-fulfilling trees, the kalpa tree is supreme; among donors, the wish-granting cow is best; among those who remove suffering, the best friend.
चिंतामणिर्गुरुश्रेष्ठो माता हिततमः पिता । सिंहो मृगेंद्रो नागेंद्रो वासुकिर्नृवरो नृप
The wish-fulfilling gem is the greatest teacher; the mother is the most beneficial; the father likewise; the lion is the king of beasts; the serpent king is Vāsuki; among men, the best is the king.
वर्णेशो ब्राह्मणश्चेतः करुणाग्र्यं नमोनमः । इत्येतद्वासुदेवस्य विष्णोर्नामसहस्रकम्
The lord of speech is the brāhmaṇa; the mind is supreme in compassion—salutations! Thus is the thousand names of Vāsudeva, of Viṣṇu.
