By gifts such as tulāpuruṣa, by sacrifices like aśvamedha, by bathing at holy places like Vārāṇasī and Prayāga, O beloved,
By ancestral rites like those at Gayā, by recitation of the Vedas, by severe austerities, observances, restraints, and compassion for beings,
By service to the guru, by duties appropriate to varṇa and āśrama, by knowledge, meditation, and right conduct through millions of births,
They do not attain that supreme good—Viṣṇu, Lord of all lords—unless they wholly take refuge in the ancient Supreme Person.
Even mortals whose minds are fixed on none but Him, though they are enjoyers, lacking knowledge and detachment, and devoid of celibacy and other vows,
Forsaking all other duties, uttering only Viṣṇu's name, they easily attain that state which all the righteous do not reach.
Viṣṇu must always be remembered, never forgotten at any time; all prescriptions and prohibitions are to be considered as serving this rule alone.
But Brahmā and the other gods, and sinless sages, have fearlessly reached the desired state by Viṣṇu's name alone.
Not having received proper worship for himself, Hari, though worshipped by me, desired something greater than this, being self-controlled.
Then the Lord of the universe, pleased and affectionate to devotees, Keśava himself worshipped them with portions of his own self.
Compassionate to gods, ancestors, and twice-born, through offerings of oblations and ancestral rites, from that time onward, he is worshipped throughout the three worlds, among all moving and unmoving beings.
All the gods, beginning with Brahma, by the grace of the wielder of the Sharnga bow, spoke to me, saying: 'From me, you shall become worshipped and supreme.'
Having thus worshipped you, O Shambhu, I shall always obtain the boon; in the Dvapara age, I will take birth among humans and others, through a portion of myself.
With scriptures composed by you, turn people away from me; conceal me, so that creation may proceed successively.
I will swiftly create this delusion, which will bewilder beings; and you, O Rudra, mighty-armed, compose treatises on delusion.
Show what is untrue and false, O mighty-armed; reveal yourself openly, and conceal me.
Then, bowing to the Supreme Lord, I asked: 'How may the sin of a thousand Brahmin murders be pacified in any way?'
Never again will ignorance of you arise, even in hundreds of millions of kalpas; therefore, having competed with you, how can I become purified, O Hari?
Tell me, Govinda, what expiation you desire; then, the blessed Lord, pleased, spoke the truth of his own nature.
By which I became superior, O daughter of the mountain; that alone I always worship, praise, and contemplate through austerity.
The supreme Vishnu alone is liberation's means through knowledge; this is the conclusion of the scriptures, and all else is for delusion.
Liberation without charity, and equality with Vishnu, knowledge from pilgrimage and other means, and my superiority over Vishnu—
The non-difference between myself and others who are liberated, and Hari likewise— all this is spoken for delusion, not otherwise; thus, I am the peerless, world-worshipped one, O Parvati.
Parvati said: 'Tell me, Lord of gods, how I too, O Shankara, may become the unrivaled, universal sovereign, equal to you, O Master.'
Mahadeva said: 'Well asked, well asked, O beloved, regarding Vishnu, the blessed Lord; I will declare the thousand principal names, bestowing liberation upon the three worlds.'
Of this hymn of a thousand names of Shri Vishnu, Shri Mahadeva is the seer, the meter is Anushtubh; Hrīṃ is the seed, Shrīṃ is the power, Klīṃ is the pin; for the purpose of the four aims—dharma, artha, kama, moksha—this is to be recited; Om, we contemplate Vāsudeva, we meditate on the great swan; may Vishnu inspire us. One who recites this, performing the rituals of body and hand, attains a result multiplied a millionfold, without doubt.
Shri Vāsudeva, the supreme Brahman, is in the heart; the root-prakriti is in the head; Mahāvarāha is in the crown; the banner of the solar dynasty is the armor; Brahma and others, desiring, delight in the wondrous childhood of the world, which is in the eyes; as appropriate, the weapon is the destruction of all; one should perform the ritual of consecration everywhere with 'Salutations to Nārāyaṇa.' Om, salutations to Nārāyaṇa, to the supreme person, the great soul; established in pure sattva, we meditate on the great swan. Om hrāṃ hrīṃ hrūṃ hraiṃ hrauṃ hraḥ; klīṃ to Krishna, to Vishnu, hrīṃ to Rama, we meditate, may that god inspire us. Kṣrauṃ to Narasimha, we contemplate, shrīṃ to Shrīkaṇṭha, we meditate, may Vishnu inspire us. Om, we contemplate Vāsudeva, we meditate on the son of Devaki, may Krishna inspire us. Om hrāṃ hrīṃ hrūṃ hraiṃ hrauṃ hraḥ; klīṃ to Krishna, to Govinda, to the beloved of the gopis, svāhā. Thus, reciting this mantra, one should meditate on the imperishable Vishnu, Shri Nivāsa, Lord of the universe; the wise should recite his hymn.
Om, Vāsudeva is the supreme Brahman, the supreme self, beyond the highest; the supreme abode, the supreme light, the supreme truth, the supreme goal.
The Supreme is Shiva, the Supreme is to be meditated upon, the Supreme is knowledge, the Supreme is the highest goal; the Supreme is the ultimate meaning, the Supreme is the highest good, the Supreme is bliss, the Supreme is the highest arising.
He is beyond the manifest, beyond space, the highest prosperity, the Supreme Lord; free from disease, unchanging, without alternatives, without dependence.
