Until gopika-sandal is seen or heard of, O Brahmin, this should be meditated upon and worshipped, as it destroys impurity and faults.
By its mere touch, a person becomes purified; at the time of death, it grants supreme liberation and sanctity to mortals.
What more can I say, O best of Brahmins? Gopika-sandal grants liberation; likewise, the wood of Tulasi and its root soil of Vishnu.
Gopika-sandal and also Hari-sandal—these four, when combined, the wise should apply to their limbs.
By this, all sacred places on Jambudvipa are always attained; whoever makes a tilaka with gopika-sandal paste.
Freed from all sins, he attains the supreme abode of Vishnu; by this, performing rites like the father's śrāddha at Gaya is accomplished.
By whomever even, if Gopīcandana is worn—be he a drunkard, a slayer of a Brahmin, a killer of cows, or a murderer of children—he is freed at that very moment by the wearing of Gopīcandana.
Thus, in the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the section of fifty-five thousand verses, in the dialogue between Umāpati and Nārada, ends the sixty-seventh chapter on the greatness of Gopīcandana.
Maheśvara said: Listen, O Nārada! I will describe the characteristics of Vaiṣṇavas; by hearing which, the world is freed from great sins such as the killing of a Brahmin.
What are their characteristics, what is their true nature—such as it is, O best of sages, listen as I now speak.
He is called a Vaiṣṇava because he belongs to Viṣṇu; among all classes, the Vaiṣṇava is said to be the highest.
In whose lineage there is one whose food is most pure, in whom are found forbearance, compassion, austerity, and truth—know him, O twice-born, as a Vaiṣṇava.
By merely seeing them, sin is destroyed like cotton; free from violence and unrighteousness is he whose mind is fixed on Viṣṇu.
He who always wears the conch, discus, mace, and lotus, and who wears a garland made of Tulasī wood on his neck—
The wise one who daily wears twelve tilaka marks, who knows righteousness and unrighteousness—he is called a Vaiṣṇava.
He who is always devoted to the Vedas and scriptures, who always performs sacrifices, and who repeatedly observes the twenty-four festivals—
Their lineage is most blessed, their fame is renowned; those men born as Bhāgavatas are the most blessed in the world.
If even one man is born as a Bhāgavata in a family, that family is delivered by him again and again, O Vāḍava.
Those born from eggs, from sprouts, and those with wombs—all these should be known as bearers of the conch, discus, and mace.
By merely seeing them, even a slayer of a Brahmin is always purified; but, O devarṣi, I will tell you who among them are the most blessed on earth.
Those Vaiṣṇavas who are seen in this world, O great sage, should be known by those skilled in truth as equal to Viṣṇu.
In the age of Kali, those are the most blessed in the world—I have heard this, there is no doubt; by worshipping Viṣṇu, all worship is accomplished.
He who has worshipped Vaiṣṇavas has performed a great gift; whether it is fruit, leaf, vegetable, food, or even cloth—
Those who give these to Vaiṣṇavas are always blessed on earth; by whom a Vaiṣṇava is worshipped, the worship of all is accomplished.
Those by whom Viṣṇu has been worshipped through righteous acts are considered most blessed; by merely seeing them, a person is purified from sins.
Why speak at length or repeatedly, O Vaḍava? Therefore, seeing them or touching them brings happiness.
Just as Viṣṇu is, so is this one; there is never any difference between them anywhere. Knowing this, O dear one, the wise should always honor them.
If even a single Vaiṣṇava brāhmaṇa is fed on earth, it is as if a thousand twice-born have been fed—of this there is no doubt.
Thus ends the sixty-eighth chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of the Vaiṣṇava,' in the dialogue between Umāpati and Nārada, in the Uttarakhaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, comprising fifty-five thousand verses.
Nārada said: O best of immortals, for those unable to fast, always tell me about that one auspicious Dvādaśī, O sinless one.
