O goddess, fulfiller of all desires, remover of all endings, always grant me health and a long lineage, O Nandini.
Worshipped by Vasistha and the wise Visvamitra, and by Kapila—remove the sins I have previously accumulated.
May cows be before me, may cows be behind me; may those with golden horns and yielding milk stand by me in heaven.
O Surabhi and her descendants, like rivers and oceans; O goddess composed of all the gods, O Subhadra, lover of devotees—
Thus, having worshipped according to rule, one should daily offer to the cows; the descendants of Surabhi are beneficent to all, pure, and destroy sin.
May the cows, mothers of the three worlds, accept my offering; salutations to Ganga for prosperity and the removal of all sins.
With this very mantra, a wise person should ward off disease; 'paṃ'—salutation to Padmanabha—one should hold a lotus, O wise one.
'caṃ'—to Vishnu in the form of the discus, the holding of the discus is remembered; 'śaṃ'—to you in the form of the conch, salutations to the bringer of happiness.
By this mantra, messengers are said to bear the conch-born mark; the wearing of the four weapons is remembered by sages.
Just as the daily Agnihotra and study of the Veda are duties, so too is the wearing of heated marks and similar for a Brahmin.
With fragrant sandalwood, especially gopika-sandal, the mark is to be worn by Brahmins who are versed in the Vedas.
Even a Chandala becomes pure by wearing the mark; there is no doubt. If he wears the upright, gentle, and marked puṇḍra.
Even a Chandala with a pure heart is always to be honored by the twice-born; in the house of Chandalas where Tulasi is seen.
The Tulasi found there should be taken with a mind full of devotion.
Maheshvara said: Thus, O best of Brahmins, Mudgala, having spoken of the paths of dharma before me, departed as he wished, O sage.
Where gopika-sandal is present, O foremost Brahmin, that house is declared by Vishnu to be like a sacred place.
There, sorrow and delusion do not exist, nor does any inauspiciousness arise, in the house where gopika-sandal is kept.
Their ancestors are happy, and their lineage always prospers, in the house where gopika-sandal is present day and night.
The clay from Gopi Pushkara is pure and cleanses the body; by applying it, diseases and ailments are destroyed.
Therefore, when it is worn on the body by men, it grants liberation and fulfills all desires; as long as it is present, all sacred places and fields resound.
Until gopika-sandal is seen or heard of, O Brahmin, this should be meditated upon and worshipped, as it destroys impurity and faults.
By its mere touch, a person becomes purified; at the time of death, it grants supreme liberation and sanctity to mortals.
What more can I say, O best of Brahmins? Gopika-sandal grants liberation; likewise, the wood of Tulasi and its root soil of Vishnu.
Gopika-sandal and also Hari-sandal—these four, when combined, the wise should apply to their limbs.
By this, all sacred places on Jambudvipa are always attained; whoever makes a tilaka with gopika-sandal paste.
Freed from all sins, he attains the supreme abode of Vishnu; by this, performing rites like the father's śrāddha at Gaya is accomplished.
By whomever even, if Gopīcandana is worn—be he a drunkard, a slayer of a Brahmin, a killer of cows, or a murderer of children—he is freed at that very moment by the wearing of Gopīcandana.
Thus, in the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the section of fifty-five thousand verses, in the dialogue between Umāpati and Nārada, ends the sixty-seventh chapter on the greatness of Gopīcandana.
Maheśvara said: Listen, O Nārada! I will describe the characteristics of Vaiṣṇavas; by hearing which, the world is freed from great sins such as the killing of a Brahmin.
What are their characteristics, what is their true nature—such as it is, O best of sages, listen as I now speak.
