पूर्णेन विधिना राजन्कुर्यात्पूजां गरीयसीम् । मृद्गोमयादिरचितं मंडलं कारयेच्छुभम्
With complete ritual, O king, one should perform the most excellent worship. A sacred circle should be made from clay, cow dung, and other materials.
तंडुलैः शुक्लधौतैश्च अश्मपिष्टैश्च कारयेत् । धर्मराजः प्रकर्त्तव्यो हस्ताद्यव यवान्वितः
It should be made with rice grains washed white and ground on stone. The king of righteousness should be fashioned, with barley in the hand and elsewhere.
नदीं वैतरणीं ताम्रां स्थापयित्वा तदग्रतः । पूजयेच्च पृथक्सम्यक्समावाहनपूर्वकम्
Having placed the copper-colored river Vaitaraṇī in front, one should worship it separately and properly, after first invoking it.
आवाहयामि देवेशं यमं वै विश्वरूपिणम् । इहाभ्येहि महाभाग सान्निध्यं कुरु केशव
I invoke the Lord of the gods, Yama, the one of universal form; O illustrious one, come here, O Keśava, and make your presence manifest.
इदं पाद्यं श्रियः कांत सोपविष्टं हरे प्रभो । विश्वोद्यानरतो नित्यं कृपां कुरु ममोपरि
O beloved of Lakṣmī, O Hari, O Lord, this water for washing the feet is offered to you as you are seated; you who delight always in the garden of the universe, show your compassion upon me.
भूतिदाय नमः पादावशोकाय च जानुनी । उरू नमः शिवायेति विश्वमूर्ते नमः कटिम्
Obeisance to the giver of prosperity—at your feet; to the remover of sorrow—at your knees; obeisance to Śiva—at your thighs; and to you, universal form—at your waist.
कंदर्पाय नमो मेढ्रमादित्याय फलं तथा । दामोदराय जठरं वासुदेवाय वै स्तनौ
Obeisance to Kandarpa—at your loins; to the Sun—at your genitals; to Dāmodara—at your abdomen; and to Vāsudeva—at your breasts.
श्रीधराय मुखं केशान्केशवायेति वै नमः । पृष्ठं शार्ङ्गधरायेति चरणौ वरदाय च
Obeisance to Śrīdhara—at your face; to Keśava—at your hair; to Śārṅgadhara—at your back; and to Varada—at your feet.
स्वनाम्ना शंखचक्रासिगदापरशुपाणये । सर्वात्मने नमस्तुभ्यं शिर इत्यभिधीयते 6.66.
To you, who bear the conch, discus, sword, mace, and axe in your hands, each by their own name; to you, the soul of all, obeisance—this is said for the head.
मत्स्यं कूर्मं च वाराहं नारसिंहं च वामनम् । रामं रामं च कृष्णं च बुधं कल्किं नमोऽस्तु ते
Obeisance to you as Matsya, Kūrma, Varāha, Narasiṃha, Vāmana, Rāma, Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Buddha, and Kalki.
सर्वपापौघनाशार्थं पूजयामि नमो नमः । एभिश्च सर्वशो मंत्रैर्विष्णुं ध्यात्वा प्रपूजयेत्
For the destruction of all heaps of sin, I worship with repeated salutations; and with all these mantras, having meditated on Viṣṇu, one should worship him.
धर्मराज नमस्तेऽस्तु धर्मराज नमोऽस्तु ते । दक्षिणाशापते तुभ्यं नमो महिषवाहन
O King of Dharma, obeisance to you; O King of Dharma, salutations to you; to you, Lord of the southern direction, obeisance, O rider of the buffalo.
चित्रगुप्त नमस्तुभ्यं विचित्राय नमोनमः । नरकार्तिप्रशांत्यर्थं कामान्यच्छ ममेप्सितान्
Obeisance to Citragupta, to the wondrous one, repeated salutations; for the removal of the torments of hell, grant me the desires I wish for.
यमाय धर्मराजाय मृत्यवे चांतकाय च । वैवस्वताय कालाय सर्वभूतक्षयाय च
To Yama, to Dharmarāja, to Mṛtyu, to Antaka, to Vaivasvata, to Kāla, and to the destroyer of all beings—obeisance.
वृकोदराय चित्राय चित्रगुप्ताय वै नमः । नीलाय चैव दध्नाय नित्यं कुर्यान्नमो नमः
Obeisance to Vṛkodara, to Citrā, to Citragupta; and to Nīla and Dadhna, always, repeated salutations.
एवं द्वादशभिः पूज्यो नामभिर्धर्मराट्प्रभुः। वैतरणी सुदुःपारे पापघ्नि सर्वकामदे
Thus, the Lord King of Dharma should be worshipped with these twelve names; O Vaitaraṇī, exceedingly difficult to cross, destroyer of sin, fulfiller of all desires.
इहाभ्येहि महाभागे गृहाणार्घं मया कृतम् । यमद्वारपथे घोरे ख्याता वैतरणी नदी
O illustrious one, come here and accept the arghya I have prepared; on the dreadful path to Yama's gate is the renowned river Vaitaraṇī.
तस्यामुद्धरणार्थाय जन्ममृत्युजरातिगा । या दुस्तरा दुष्कृतिभिः सर्वप्राणिभयापहा
For the sake of deliverance in that river, which transcends birth, death, and old age, which is hard to cross for evildoers, and which removes all fear from living beings.
यस्यां भयात्प्रमज्जंति प्राणिनो यातनापराः । तर्तुकामस्तु तां घोरं जया देवि नमोनमः
Out of fear of her, beings who are subject to torment sink down; but one who wishes to cross that dreadful river—obeisance to you, O victorious goddess.
तस्यां देवाधितिष्ठंति या सा वैतरणी नदी । सा चापि पूजिता भक्त्या प्रीत्यर्थं केशवस्य च
In that river, the gods reside; that Vaitaraṇī river, when worshipped with devotion, brings delight to Keśava as well.
यस्यास्तटे प्रविशंति ऋषयः पितरस्तथा । सा चापि सिंधुरूपेण पूजिता पापहारिका
On whose banks sages and ancestors enter—she, too, in the form of a river, is honored and removes sins.
तरीतुं तां प्रदास्यामि सर्वपापविमुक्तये । पुण्यार्थं संप्रवक्ष्यामि तुभ्यं वैतरणी नदीम्
To cross her, I shall give you the means for complete liberation from all sins; for the sake of merit, I will now tell you about the Vaitarani river.
मयासि पूजिता भक्त्या प्रीत्यर्थं केशवस्य च । कृष्णकृष्णजगन्नाथ संसारादुद्धरस्व माम्
I have worshipped you with devotion, for the pleasure of Kesava; O Krishna, Krishna, Lord of the Universe, rescue me from worldly existence.
नामग्रहणमात्रेण सर्वं पापं हरस्व मे । यज्ञोपवीतं परमं कारितं नवतंतुभिः
By merely uttering your name, remove all my sins; the sacred thread, supreme, has been made with ninety threads.
प्रतिगृह्णीष्व देवेश प्रीतो यच्छ ममेप्सितम् । इदं तव च तांबूलं यथाशक्त्या सुशोभनम्
Accept this, O Lord of the gods, and, pleased, grant me my desired boon; here is your betel leaf, as beautiful as I am able to offer.
प्रतिगृह्णीष्व देवेश मामुद्धर भवार्णवात् । पंचवर्ती प्रदीपोऽयं देवेशारार्तिकं तव
Accept this, O Lord of the gods, and lift me from the ocean of existence; this five-wicked lamp is for your worship, O Lord of the gods.
मोहांधकारद्युमणे भक्तियुक्तो भवार्तिहृत् । परमान्नं सुपक्वान्नं समस्तरससंयुतम्
O sun dispelling the darkness of delusion, endowed with devotion, remover of worldly suffering; this supreme, well-cooked food, filled with all flavors—
निवेदितं मया भक्त्या भगवन्प्रतिगृह्यताम् । द्वादशाक्षरमंत्रेण यथासंख्य जपेन च
—has been offered by me with devotion; O Lord, may you accept it; with the twelve-syllable mantra, as prescribed, by recitation—
प्रीयतां मे श्रियःकांतः प्रीतो यच्छतु वांछितम् । पंच गावः समुत्पन्ना मथ्यमाने महोदधौ
—may the beloved of Sri be pleased with me and, being pleased, grant what is desired; five cows arose when the great ocean was churned.
तासां मध्ये तु या नंदा तस्यै धेन्वै नमोनमः । गां संपूज्य विधानेन अर्घ्यं दद्यात्समाहितः
Among them, the one named Nanda—to that cow I offer repeated salutations; having duly worshipped the cow, one should attentively offer arghya.
