महादेव उवाच- स्वदारनिरतश्चैव ब्रह्मचारी स्मृतो बुधैः । चांडालादधिको विद्वन्यः स्वभार्यां परित्यजेत्
Mahadeva said: A man devoted to his own wife is regarded by the wise as a true brahmachari; but, O learned one, whoever abandons his own wife is considered lower than a Chandala.
ऋतावभिगमं कृत्वा ब्रह्मचर्यं विधीयते । परित्यजति यो भार्यां भक्तां दोषविवर्जिताम्
Approaching one's wife at the proper season is prescribed as brahmacharya; but whoever forsakes a devoted and faultless wife—
पापकर्मा नरो लोके भ्रूणहत्यामवाप्नुयात् । अश्वमेधसहस्राणि वाजपेयशतानि च
Such a man, engaged in sinful deeds, incurs the sin of killing an embryo; even a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices and hundreds of Vajapeya rites—
एकादश्युपवासस्य कलां नार्हंति षोडशीम् । स्नानं दानं जपो होमः स्वाध्यायं देवतार्चनम्
Do not equal even a sixteenth part of the merit gained by fasting on Ekadashi; bathing, giving gifts, recitation, fire-offering, self-study, and worship of deities—
चातुर्मास्यकृतं यच्च सर्वं हि चाक्षयं भवेत् । एककालं द्विकालं वा पुराणं शृणुते तु यः
And whatever is performed during the Caturmasya becomes inexhaustible; whoever listens to the Purana once or twice—
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति । हरौ सुप्ते विशेषेण हरेर्नामपठन्जपन्
Freed from all sins, he attains the world of Vishnu; especially by reciting and chanting the names of Hari while Hari is asleep—
तत्फलं कोटिगुणितं लभते द्विजसत्तम । वैष्णवो ब्राह्मणो यस्तु पूजनं यः करोति हि
That result is obtained a crore-fold, O best of twice-born; and the Vaishnava Brahmin who performs worship—
स एव सर्वधर्मात्मा पूज्य एव न संशयः । चातुर्मास्यमिदं पुण्यं पवित्रं पापनाशनम् । श्रुत्वा तु लभते पुण्यं गंगास्नानफलं लभेत्
He alone is the embodiment of all dharma and is truly worthy of worship, without doubt; this Caturmasya is holy, purifying, and destroys sin; by hearing it, one gains merit equal to bathing in the Ganga.
नारद उवाच- चातुर्मास्यव्रतानां च प्रब्रूह्युद्यापनं विभो । उद्यापने कृते सर्वं संपूर्णं भवति ध्रुवम्
Narada said: O Lord, please explain the completion rite (udyapana) for the Caturmasya vows; when the completion is performed, everything is certainly fulfilled.
महादेव उवाच- व्रतं कृत्वा महाभाग यदि नोद्यापनं चरेत् । यस्तु कर्त्ता कर्मणां स न सम्यक्फलभाक्भवेत्
Mahadeva said: O highly fortunate one, if, after undertaking the vow, one does not perform the completion rite, then the performer of the act does not obtain the full fruit.
व्रतवैकल्यमासाद्य कुष्ठी चांधः प्रजायते । एतस्मात्कारणाच्चैव कुर्यादुद्यापनं द्विज
If there is a deficiency in the vow, one becomes afflicted with leprosy or blindness; therefore, O twice-born, one should certainly perform the completion rite.
गृहीत्वा नियमानेतान्पालयित्वा यथाविधि । सुप्तोत्थिते जगन्नाथे गत्वा ब्राह्मणसंनिधौ
Having observed the prescribed rules and restraints, and after the Lord of the universe has awakened, one should go in the presence of Brahmins—
क्षमापयेद्देवदेवं यथाविधि च विस्तरात् । तैलत्यागे घृतं दद्याद्घृतत्यागे पयः स्मृतम्
And, according to proper procedure and in detail, ask forgiveness from the Lord of gods; if oil is renounced, one should give ghee, and if ghee is renounced, milk is prescribed.
मौने पिंडास्तिला देयाः सहिरण्या द्विजातये । भोजने भोजनं दद्याद्दध्योदनसमन्वितम्
In silence, one should give balls of sesame with gold to a Brahmin; at the meal, one should serve food mixed with curd and rice.
अन्नं दद्याद्विशेषेण हिरण्येन समन्वितम् । अन्नदानान्मुनिश्रेष्ठ विष्णुलोके महीयते
Especially, one should give food accompanied by gold; O best of sages, by giving food, one is honored in the world of Vishnu.
पालाशपात्रे यो भुंक्ते नरो मासचतुष्टयम् । भाजनं घृतपूर्णं तु दद्यादुद्यापने द्विज
Whoever eats from a palasha leaf for four months should, at the completion rite, give a vessel filled with ghee, O twice-born.
षड्रसं भोजनं दद्याद्ब्राह्मणे नक्तभोजने । अयाचिते ह्यनड्वाहं सहिरण्यं प्रदापयेत्
One should give to a Brahmin, at the night meal, food of six tastes; and, unasked, a bull with gold should be given.
माषं त्यजन्मुनिश्रेष्ठ गां च दद्यात्सवत्सकाम् । धात्रीस्नाने नरो दद्यात्स्वर्णं माषिकमेवच
O best of sages, renouncing black gram, one should give a cow with her calf; at the amla fruit bath, one should give gold and black gram.
फलानां नियमे चैव फलानि च प्रदापयेत् । धान्यानां नियमे धान्यमथवा शालयः स्मृताः
In the observance concerning fruits, one should offer fruits; in the observance concerning grains, one should offer grains, or rice is prescribed.
तद्वद्भूशयने शय्यां सतूलां गेंदुकान्विताम् । ब्रह्मचर्यं कृतं येन चातुर्मास्ये द्विजोत्तम
Likewise, for bedding, one should give a bed with cotton and a pillow; whoever has practiced celibacy during the four months, O best of twice-born.
दंपत्योर्भोजनं देयमुभयोर्भक्तिपूर्वकम् । सभोगं दक्षिणोपेतं सशाकं लवणं तथा
Food should be given to a married couple, both with devotion, accompanied by enjoyment, with a gift, and including vegetables and salt.
नित्यस्नाने नरो दद्यान्निस्नेहे सर्पिः सक्तवः । नखकेशव्रते चैव प्रादेशं परिकल्पयेत्
One should daily give food with ghee and cakes to a person who bathes regularly; in the observance concerning nails and hair, one should offer a measure.
उपानहौ प्रदातव्यौ उपानहविवर्जनात् । आमिषस्य परित्यागात्सवत्सा कपिला स्मृता
Two sandals should be given due to the avoidance of sandals; due to the renunciation of meat, a cow with a calf and of a tawny color is prescribed.
नित्यं दीपप्रदो यस्तु सौवर्णं दीपमावहेत् । तं दीपं घृतसंयुक्तं दद्याच्चैव द्विजन्मने
Whoever always gives a lamp, should offer a golden lamp; that lamp, mixed with ghee, should be given to a twice-born.
विष्णुभक्ताय विप्राय परिपूर्णव्रतेप्सया । शाकस्य नियमे शाकं माषे सौवर्णमाषकम्
To a Brahmin devoted to Vishnu, desiring to complete the observance, one should give vegetables in the observance concerning vegetables, and golden beans in the observance concerning beans.
मैथुनानां तु नियमे रौप्यं दद्याद्दिवजातये । नागवल्ल्यास्तु नियमे कर्पूरं सहरिण्यकम्
In the observance concerning sexual union, one should give silver to a twice-born; in the observance concerning the nāgavallī, one should give camphor with deer musk.
कालेकाले द्विजश्रेष्ठ यत्कृतं नियमेन तु । तत्तद्देयं विशेषेण परलोकगतीप्सया
O best of twice-born, whatever is performed at the proper time according to observance, that should be given especially by one desiring the path to the next world.
आदौ स्नानादिकं कृत्वा विष्णोरग्रे प्रकाशयेत् । अनादिनिधनो देवः शंखचक्रगदाधरः । तस्याग्रे के न कुर्वंति यतो विष्णुस्तु पापहा
First, having performed bathing and other rites, one should display them before Vishnu, the beginningless and endless Lord, bearing the conch, discus, and mace; before Him, who does not perform, since Vishnu is the remover of sin.
इति श्रीपाद्मे महापुराणे पंचपंचाशत्साहस्र्यां संहितायामुत्तरखंडे उमापतिनारदसंवादे चातुर्मास्योद्यापनंनाम पंचषष्टितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the sixty-fifth chapter named 'The Completion of the Four-Month Observance' in the dialogue between Umāpati and Nārada, in the Uttarakhaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the compendium of fifty-five thousand verses.
नारद उवाच- यमस्याराधनं ब्रूहि मद्धितार्थं सुरोत्तम । कथं न गम्यते देव नरेण नरकांतरे
Nārada said: O best of gods, tell me about the worship of Yama for my benefit; how does a man not go to another hell, O Lord?
