He eats only sin; therefore, one should practice silence. O Nārada, food eaten in silence is equal to fasting.
O best of men, the one who eats in silence offers five life-breaths as oblations; his five great sins are destroyed, without doubt.
One should not use stitched cloth for ancestral rites, O Vadava; cloth that has been upon an impure body is likewise considered impure.
If a garment is worn around the waist or back and becomes soiled by excrement, urine, or sexual activity, that garment should be discarded.
Especially for ancestral rites, O Vadava, such garments must be avoided; and always, O sage, the wise should avoid them in worship of the gods and of the wielder of the discus.
These rites should be performed especially by those who are pure and have mastered their senses; when Hrishikesha is resting, grass, vegetables, and kusumbha flowers are used.
Stitched garments are to be carefully avoided; during the four-month period, when Hari is resting, whoever avoids these things—
—does not go to hell, nor to the flood of evil; one should not eat intoxicants, meat, rabbit, or pork.
Especially during the four-month period, when Janardana is resting, a person devoted to nonviolence attains divinity.
False anger, harshness, and sexual activity during festivals—whoever avoids these, O chief of Brahmins, attains the fruit of an ashvamedha sacrifice.
Through celibacy, offspring increase, and so does lifespan; flowers, leaves, fruits, bedding, oil massage, and ointments—
Milk taken in vain, meat, and intoxicants should be avoided; whatever is regularly renounced during the four-month period when Hari is resting—
That should first be given to a Brahmin, without doubt; O wise one, wealth given for the sake of the gods becomes inexhaustible.
A Brahmin receives a reward multiplied a hundred million times, without doubt; by whatever means, O chief of Brahmins, Hari is worshipped with discipline—
He grants the abode of Vishnu; there should be no hesitation; whoever does not observe discipline during the four-month period when Hari is resting—
He too attains hell, and his birth is wasted; whatever man always performs the excellent rite prescribed by the twice-born—
And likewise follows the prescribed disciplines, he attains the supreme state; a gift given without the three aims of life is fruitless.
Therefore, with all effort, the best of men should please Janardana, lord of gods, with disciplines and gifts according to his ability.
Without bathing, giving, and honoring Brahmins, all such acts are wasted, even for as long as the fourteen Indras.
Narada said: Tell me, O Lord of the universe, what kind of celibacy pleases Govinda when practiced by men?
Mahadeva said: A man devoted to his own wife is regarded by the wise as a true brahmachari; but, O learned one, whoever abandons his own wife is considered lower than a Chandala.
Approaching one's wife at the proper season is prescribed as brahmacharya; but whoever forsakes a devoted and faultless wife—
Such a man, engaged in sinful deeds, incurs the sin of killing an embryo; even a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices and hundreds of Vajapeya rites—
Do not equal even a sixteenth part of the merit gained by fasting on Ekadashi; bathing, giving gifts, recitation, fire-offering, self-study, and worship of deities—
And whatever is performed during the Caturmasya becomes inexhaustible; whoever listens to the Purana once or twice—
Freed from all sins, he attains the world of Vishnu; especially by reciting and chanting the names of Hari while Hari is asleep—
That result is obtained a crore-fold, O best of twice-born; and the Vaishnava Brahmin who performs worship—
He alone is the embodiment of all dharma and is truly worthy of worship, without doubt; this Caturmasya is holy, purifying, and destroys sin; by hearing it, one gains merit equal to bathing in the Ganga.
Narada said: O Lord, please explain the completion rite (udyapana) for the Caturmasya vows; when the completion is performed, everything is certainly fulfilled.
Mahadeva said: O highly fortunate one, if, after undertaking the vow, one does not perform the completion rite, then the performer of the act does not obtain the full fruit.
