He attains the fruit of all diverse sacrifices; but he should avoid pomegranate, citron, and coconut.
Becoming a celestial being at the end, he attains the abode of Vishnu; he is born in a wealthy, prosperous family.
Whoever offers food once a day for four months, for as many moments as the sun rises and sets—
For that many thousands of years he is honored in the world of Vishnu; but if a man avoids rice, barley, and wheat—
Whatever fruit is declared by the sages to arise from performing the Aśvamedha and similar sacrifices properly, with due gifts, that very fruit a man obtains.
He becomes endowed with wealth and grain, and is born with many sons, who offers libations with tulasī, sesame, and darbha grass.
That fruit is multiplied a crore-fold, especially during the Cāturmāsya, when one performs this threefold act while Viṣṇu is asleep.
They too rejoice in the presence of Viṣṇu for thousands of yugas, whether they sing a verse, half a verse, or even half a line before Viṣṇu.
Those who sing before Viṣṇu are liberated, without doubt; and whoever avoids sexual union while the god Janārdana is asleep—
He too is honored in Viṣṇu's world for one Manvantara; and by abstaining from curd, milk, buttermilk, jaggery, and leafy vegetables—
By abstaining from these, O Brahmin, one surely attains liberation; and those who bathe with āmalaka fruit—
They obtain great merit every day, O sage; the wise declare that the dhātrī fruit removes sin.
Brahmins were created in ancient times for the purpose of rescuing the three worlds; whoever observes silence at twilight and eats for four months—
He enjoys happiness in Vaikuṇṭha for four Manvantaras; and a man who eats self-cooked food for four months—
He is honored in Indra's world for ten thousand years; and whoever observes silence for four months—
He goes to Viṣṇu's city, and then to Brahmā's; but a man who eats in silence never falls from grace.
Even Rākṣasas who ate in silence attained heaven; but cooked food mixed with worms and insects is impure.
O best of twice-born, such food should be regarded as equal to cow's flesh; if a human eats such impure food—
This food is always said to be dear to Rākṣasas; for in ancient times Brahmā, being pleased, gave it to them, the great-souled ones.
But those who feed in silence surely attain heaven; whereas one who eats while talking, his food becomes impure.
He eats only sin; therefore, one should practice silence. O Nārada, food eaten in silence is equal to fasting.
O best of men, the one who eats in silence offers five life-breaths as oblations; his five great sins are destroyed, without doubt.
One should not use stitched cloth for ancestral rites, O Vadava; cloth that has been upon an impure body is likewise considered impure.
If a garment is worn around the waist or back and becomes soiled by excrement, urine, or sexual activity, that garment should be discarded.
Especially for ancestral rites, O Vadava, such garments must be avoided; and always, O sage, the wise should avoid them in worship of the gods and of the wielder of the discus.
These rites should be performed especially by those who are pure and have mastered their senses; when Hrishikesha is resting, grass, vegetables, and kusumbha flowers are used.
Stitched garments are to be carefully avoided; during the four-month period, when Hari is resting, whoever avoids these things—
—does not go to hell, nor to the flood of evil; one should not eat intoxicants, meat, rabbit, or pork.
Especially during the four-month period, when Janardana is resting, a person devoted to nonviolence attains divinity.
False anger, harshness, and sexual activity during festivals—whoever avoids these, O chief of Brahmins, attains the fruit of an ashvamedha sacrifice.
