वर्जयेद्यस्तु वैरूप्यं दौर्गंध्यं नाप्नुयान्नरः । तांबूलवर्जनाद्भोगी रक्तकंठस्तु जायते
But if a man abstains from betel, he does not acquire deformity or foul odor; by giving up betel, he becomes a serpent with a red throat.
घृतत्यागाच्च लावण्यं सदा स्निग्धतनुर्भवेत् । फलत्यागाच्च विपेंद्र बहुपुत्रश्च जायते
By renouncing ghee, one always attains beauty and a smooth body; by giving up fruits, O best of kings, one is born with many sons.
पलाशपत्राशनकृद्रूपवान्भोगवान्भवेत् । दीप्तिमान्दीप्तिकरणः साक्षाद्द्रव्यपतिर्भवेत्
He who eats palāśa leaves becomes handsome and prosperous; he becomes radiant, a source of radiance, and directly the lord of wealth.
दधिदुग्धपरित्यागी गोलोकं लभते नरः । मौनव्रती भवेद्यस्तु तस्याज्ञाऽस्खलिता भवेत्
A man who gives up curd and milk attains Goloka; and he who observes the vow of silence, his command becomes unerring.
इंद्रासनमवाप्नोति स्थालीपाकस्य वर्जनात् । एवमादि परित्यागाद्धर्मस्थो धर्मनंदनः
By abstaining from food cooked in a pot, one attains Indra’s throne; thus, by such renunciations and others, the righteous one delights in dharma.
नमोनारायणायेति जप्त्वा शतगुणं फलम् । एक एव स वै स्वर्गे विद्याधरपतिर्भवेत्
By reciting 'Salutations to Nārāyaṇa,' one attains a hundredfold reward; he alone becomes the lord of the Vidyādharas in heaven.
पुष्करस्नानमात्रेण गंगायाः स्नानजं फलम्
By merely bathing in Puṣkara, one obtains the merit of bathing in the Gaṅgā.
भूमौ भुंक्ते सदा यस्तु स पृथिव्यधिपो भवेत् । विष्णोश्चैव गृहे कुर्यादुपलेपनमार्जनम्
He who always eats on the ground becomes the lord of the earth; and he who sweeps and smears the house of Viṣṇu—
कल्पस्थायी भवेद्विद्वन्वैकुंठे नात्र संशयः । प्रदक्षिणं च यः कुर्याच्छतमष्टोत्तरं नरः
—O wise one, he remains in Vaikuṇṭha for an age, without doubt; and whoever performs one hundred and eight circumambulations—
हंसयुक्तविमानेन दिव्येन सह गच्छति । गीतवाद्यकरो विष्णोर्गांधर्वं लोकमाप्नुयात्
—he goes in a divine chariot yoked with swans; making music and song for Viṣṇu, he attains the Gandharva world.
पंचगव्याशनो विद्वन्चांद्रायणफलं लभेत् । नित्यं शास्त्रविनोदेन लोकान्यस्तु प्रबोधयेत्
A learned one who eats pañcagavya attains the fruit of the Cāndrāyaṇa vow; and whoever always enlightens people with the delight of scripture—
स व्यासरूपी विष्ण्वग्रे ततो विष्णुपदं लभेत् । तुलसीदलपूजां तु कृत्वा विष्णुपुरं व्रजेत्
—he takes the form of Vyāsa before Viṣṇu, and then attains the abode of Viṣṇu; and by worshipping with tulasī leaves, he goes to Viṣṇu’s city.
कृत्वा प्रोक्षणकं दिव्यं स्थानमप्सरसां लभेत् । शीतांबुना गृहे स्नानात्निर्मलं देहमाप्नुयात्
By performing a divine sprinkling rite, he attains the realm of the Apsarases; by bathing at home with cold water, he obtains a pure body.
उष्णोदकं परित्यज्य स्नानं वै पौष्करं लभेत् । पत्रेषु यो नरो भुंक्ते कुरुक्षेत्रफलं लभेत्
By giving up hot water, one attains the merit of bathing at Puṣkara; and the man who eats on leaves obtains the fruit of Kurukṣetra.
भुंक्ते शिलायां यो नित्यं तस्य पुण्यं प्रयागजम् । धर्मोदयजलत्यागी न रोगैः परिभूयते
He who always eats on stone obtains the merit of Prayāga; and one who gives up water at the start of a meal is not afflicted by diseases.
ताम्रपात्रेषु भुंजानो नैमिषं फलमाप्रुयात् । कांस्यपात्रं परित्यज्य शेषपात्रमुपाचरेत्
He who eats from copper vessels attains the fruit of Naimiṣa; by avoiding bronze vessels, he should use other vessels.
अलाभे सर्वपात्राणां मृन्मयं पात्रमुत्तमम् । स्वगृहीतैः कृतैर्वापि पात्रैः पालाशसंभवैः
If all vessels are unavailable, an earthen vessel is best; or vessels made by oneself, or those made from palāśa leaves.
यस्तु संवत्सरं पूर्ण अग्निहोत्रमुपासते । पात्रैर्वा भोजनं विद्वान्सेवते तत्समं स्मृतम्
He who, for a full year, performs agnihotra, or the learned one who eats with such vessels, is considered equal.
चांद्रायणसमं प्रोक्तं ब्रह्मपात्रेषु भोजने । एकैकं भोजनं विद्वन्ब्रह्मपत्रेषु भुंजतः
It is declared that eating from brahma vessels is equal to the Cāndrāyaṇa rite; each meal taken by the wise in brahma vessels is so regarded.
त्रिरात्रेण समं प्रोक्तं महापातकनाशनम् । एकादश्युपवासेन यत्पुण्यं परिकीर्तितम्
It is said that fasting on the eleventh day yields merit equal to the destruction of great sins in three nights.
सर्वदानफलं चैव सर्वतीर्थफलं लभेत् । न चापि नरकं पश्येत्पद्मपत्रेषु भोजनात्
One attains the fruit of all gifts and the fruit of all pilgrimages, and does not see hell, by eating from padma leaves.
ब्राह्मणो याति वैकुंठेऽन्यो जनः स्वर्गमाप्नुयात् । एष ब्रह्म महावृक्षः पापहा सर्वकामदः
A brāhmaṇa attains Vaikuṇṭha, another person attains heaven; this is the great brahma tree, destroyer of sin and fulfiller of all desires.
मध्यमं वर्जितं पत्रं शूद्रजातेर्नृपोत्तम । भुंजन्नरकमाप्नोति यावदिंद्राश्चतुर्दश
O best of kings, the middle leaf, excluded for those of śūdra birth, if eaten, brings hell for as many years as there are fourteen Indras.
वर्जयेन्मध्यमं पत्रं शेषपत्रेषु भोजनम् । मध्यपत्रे च यः शूद्रो भोजनं कुरुते द्विज
One should avoid the middle leaf; eating from the remaining leaves is permitted. If a śūdra eats from the middle leaf, O twice-born, he incurs sin.
कपिलां ब्रह्मणे दत्त्वा शुद्धिर्भवति नान्यथा । कपिलां दोहयेद्यस्तु शूद्रो भुंक्ते निजे गृहे
By giving a kapilā cow to a brāhmaṇa, purity is attained, not otherwise; if a śūdra milks the kapilā and eats in his own house,
दशवर्षसहस्राणि विष्ठायां जायते कृमिः । कृमियोनिविनिर्मुक्तः पशुयोनिमवाप्नुयात्
He becomes a worm in excrement for ten thousand years; freed from the worm species, he attains the animal birth.
कपिलं योह्यनड्वाहं शूद्रो भूत्वात्र वाहयेत् । यावंति तस्य रोमाणि तावद्वर्षाणि नारद 6.64.
If a śūdra makes a kapilā cow carry loads, O Nārada, for as many hairs as it has, so many years he suffers.
कुंभीपाकेषु पच्येत स नरो नात्र संशयः । अजा चैव गृहे तस्य शूद्रस्य च विशेषतः
That man is cooked in the Kumbhīpāka hell, there is no doubt; and especially if a goat is kept in the house of a śūdra.
तस्या वै दुग्धपानेन शूद्रो यातीह रौरवम् । ब्राह्मणैः सह व्यापारो यस्य शूद्रस्य दृश्यते
By drinking its milk, the śūdra goes to the Raurava hell; if a śūdra is seen working together with brāhmaṇas,
स विप्रो वेदबाह्यः स्याच्छूद्रः कौलिक उच्यते । व्यापारे प्रेरितो विप्रः शूद्राज्ञां च करोति यः
That brāhmaṇa becomes outside the Vedas, and the śūdra is called a weaver; if a brāhmaṇa is employed in trade and obeys the śūdra's command,
