Lakshmi said: I have now become gracious and have come from Vaikuntha, sent by the Lord of the gods, through the power of Kamala.
In the first fortnight of the month of Purushottama, the vow which you observed at Prayaga in the presence of sages—
By the power of this vow, I am under your control, without doubt. In your lineage, O best of twice-born, there will be men.
By my grace, they will attain it; what I have spoken to you is true. The Brahmana said: If you are gracious to me, O Padma, tell me the vow in detail.
About which the virtuous, those twice-born people, speak in their stories. Lakshmi said: It is supremely worthy of hearing for listeners, most pure and unsurpassed.
It destroys evil dreams, is meritorious, and should be listened to with effort. Even one who recites a verse or half a verse with utmost faith—
Having recited, is immediately freed from millions of great sins. Of months, it is the supreme month, as Garuda is among birds.
As Ganga is among rivers, and Dvadashi among lunar days. Even today, all the immortals in Bharata desire birth.
They worship in various ways Narayana, the flawless one. Those who always worship the lord Narayana with devotion—
They are constantly worshipped by Brahma and the hosts of gods. Those who are devoted to his name, and those intent on Hari's praise—
Those devoted to Hari's worship are fulfilled in the age of Kali. Whether in the bright or dark fortnight, there are two Ekadashis.
For householders, the former is observed; for ascetics, the latter is remembered. Ekadashi, Dvadashi, and Trayodashi at the end of the night—there, the merit of a hundred sacrifices is gained, and on Trayodashi, during the breaking of the fast.
On Ekadashi, having remained without food, on the next day, I will eat, O lotus-eyed one. Be my refuge, O Achyuta.
Reciting this mantra of the Lord of gods, the wielder of the discus, with devotion and a satisfied mind, one should observe the fast.
One should keep vigil before the deity, disciplined in the vow, with songs, instruments, dances, and recitation of the Puranas and other texts.
Then, rising early on the day of Dvadashi, the votary, having bathed, worships Vishnu according to the prescribed rites, with controlled senses.
By bathing Janardana with the five nectars on the eleventh day, and by bathing Hari with milk on the twelfth, one attains similarity of form with Him.
O Kesava, I am blinded by the darkness of ignorance; by this vow, be pleased, turn Your face toward me, and grant me the vision of knowledge.
Having thus petitioned the Lord of the gods, the God of gods, the wielder of the mace, one should feed Brahmins with devotion and give them gifts.
Then, together with his relatives, devoted to Narayana, having performed the five great sacrifices, he should partake of food himself, observing restraint in speech.
Whoever, with effort, observes this meritorious Ekadashi vow in this manner, goes to the abode of Vishnu, from which return is rare.
Having spoken thus and granted him a boon, Kamala vanished; and that Brahmin, having become wealthy, returned to his father's house.
Sri Krishna said: Whoever, O King, observes this excellent Kamala-vrata, or hears it on the day of Vishnu, is freed from all sins.
Thus ends the sixty-second chapter, named 'The Krishna Kamala Ekadashi,' in the dialogue between Umapati and Narada, in the Uttarakanda of the glorious Padma Mahapurana, comprising fifty-five thousand verses.
Yudhishthira said: O Lord of the world, I have heard of many dharmas and vows, but I have not heard of anything equal to Ekadashi, O Janardana.
Tell me again of that Ekadashi which destroys sin and bestows merit, by which a person in this world attains the supreme state.
Sri Krishna said: Whether it falls in the bright or dark fortnight, Ekadashi should never be abandoned, O protector of the earth, for it increases liberation and happiness.
O King, in the age of Kali, Ekadashi frees from worldly bondage, grants all desires, and destroys all sins on earth.
On Sunday, or on an auspicious day, or at a solstice, O best of kings, Ekadashi should always be observed; it increases sons and grandsons.
The vow of Ekadashi should never be abandoned by those devoted to Vishnu; it always bestows long life, fame, offspring, health, and wealth.
