Having observed the fast, they are freed from sins accumulated over a hundred births; this is a great vow, O son, destroyer of a multitude of great sins.
One should properly observe the awakening day of Viṣṇu; by this vow, having satisfied the Lord Janārdana—
He adorns all directions and goes to the abode of Hari; this should be performed with effort by those who desire radiance and wealth.
The sin accumulated in childhood, youth, or old age— whether little or much, even that committed over a hundred births—
When Govinda is worshipped in this, he washes away the sins of people; it brings wealth and grain, is auspicious, and removes all sins supremely.
By observing it with devotion to Hari, nothing remains unattainable; the fruit described for the eclipse of the moon or sun—
That is said to be a thousand times greater when performed on Prabodhini night: bathing, charity, recitation, offering, study, and worship of Hari.
All of these, when done on Prabodhini, are multiplied ten million times; whatever merit a person has acquired since birth—
All of that becomes futile if one does not observe the Kartika vow; whoever neglects the discipline of Vishnu in Kartika—
He does not obtain the fruit of merit earned from birth, O Narada; therefore, with all effort, one should serve Janardana, Lord of gods.
One should worship Him, O chief of Brahmins, who grants all desired fruits; whoever, devoted to Vishnu in Kartika, avoids others' food—
By abstaining from others' food, O child, he attains the fruit of the Chandrayana vow; Madhusudana is pleased in Kartika by constant delight in scripture.
He burns away all sins and attains the fruit of ten thousand sacrifices; not so much by sacrifices or gifts like Vājapeya does He become pleased.
As by discussions of scripture in Kartika does Madhusudana; those who recite the stories of Vishnu, those who listen, blessed—
For half a verse or a quarter of a verse in Kartika, the fruit is equal to a hundred cows; abandoning all duties, in Kartika before Keshava—
One should ascertain the scriptures and listen, O great sage; whoever tells Hari's story with a mind for virtue or for gain—
In Kartika, O tiger among sages, he saves a hundred families; whoever listens to Vaishnava stories with discipline—
Especially in Kartika, he attains the fruit of a thousand cows; on the day of Prabodha, whoever listens to Hari's story—
He attains the fruit of giving a land of seven continents, O sage; having heard the divine story of Vishnu, those who worship the narrator—
By their own ability, O tiger among sages, their world is said to be imperishable; whoever spends Kartika with delight in song and scripture—
He does not return again, as I have seen, O lover of Kali age; song, dance, and music, and the noble story of Vishnu, O sage—
Whoever performs them is a virtuous soul, established above the three worlds; with many flowers, many fruits, camphor, aloe, and saffron—
O best of sages, worship of Hari must be performed on the awakening day in Kārtika, for immeasurable merit is thereby attained.
On the night of Prabodhini, one should remain awake, offering various fruits and substances; taking water in a conch, an offering should be given to Janārdana.
The fruit obtained from all pilgrimages and all gifts is multiplied a crore times by offering arghya on the awakening day.
Then, worship of the guru should be performed with food, clothing, and other gifts, and with offerings, O divine sage, for the satisfaction of the wielder of the discus.
Whoever listens to the Bhāgavata or recites the Purāṇa, for each syllable, receives the merit arising from the gift made by Kapila.
O tiger among sages, whoever observes the Vaiṣṇava vow in Kārtika according to his ability, as prescribed, his liberation is certain and unwavering.
If Garuḍa-bannered Madhusūdana is worshipped with a single ketakī leaf, he becomes exceedingly pleased for a thousand years.
Whoever worships Janārdana with agastya flowers, O divine sage, for him, by merely seeing the Lord, the fire of hell is destroyed.
