गायमानौ तु तौ तत्र अप्सरोगणसेवितौ । मदनाभिपरीतांगौ पुष्पदंती च माल्यवान्
There, the two sang, attended by hosts of apsarases; their bodies overcome by passion—Pushpadanti and Malyavan.
परस्परानुरागेण व्यामोहवशमागतौ । न शुद्धगानं गायेतां चित्तभ्रमसमन्वितौ
Overwhelmed by mutual love, they fell under the sway of infatuation; their minds distracted, they could not sing purely.
बद्धदृष्टी तथान्योन्यं कामबाणवशं गतौ । ज्ञात्वा लेखर्षभस्तत्र संगतं मानसं तयोः
Their eyes fixed on each other, both overcome by the arrows of desire; seeing their minds united, Lekharshabha (Indra) perceived their state.
तालक्रियामानलोपात्तथा गीतविसर्जनात् । चिंतयित्वा तु मघवा ह्यवमानं तथात्मनः
Because of their neglect of rhythm and abandonment of song, Maghavan (Indra), reflecting on the insult to himself, became thoughtful.
कुपितश्च तयोरर्थे शापं दास्यन्निदं जगौ । धिग्धिग्वां पतितौ मूढावाज्ञाभंग कृतौ मम
Angry on their account, he prepared to utter a curse and spoke: 'Shame, shame! You two have fallen, deluded, and disobeyed my command.'
युवां पिशाचौ भवतां दंपतीभावधारिणौ । मर्त्यलोकमनुप्राप्तौ भुंजानौ कर्मणः फलम्
'You two shall become pisacas, taking the form of a married couple, descending to the world of mortals, experiencing the fruit of your actions.'
एवं मघवता शप्तावुभौ दुःखितमानसौ । हिमवंतं गिरिं प्राप्ताविंद्रशापाद्विमोहितौ
Thus, having been cursed by Maghavan, both, their minds afflicted with sorrow, reached Mount Himavat, bewildered by Indra's curse.
उभौ पिशाचतां प्राप्तौ दारुणं दुःखमेव च । संतप्तमानसौ तत्र हिमकृच्छ्रगतावुभौ
Both attained the state of piśācas and terrible suffering; their minds tormented, they endured the harsh cold there.
गंधर्वत्वमप्सरस्त्वं न जानीतो विमौहितौ । पीड्यमानौ निदाघेन देहपातकजेन च
Though one was a gandharva and the other an apsaras, in their delusion they did not know this, being afflicted by the heat and the sin that led to the fall of their bodies.
न निशायां सुखं शांतिं लभेते कर्मपीडितौ । परस्परं वादमानौ चेरतुर्गिरिगह्वरे
Tormented by their deeds, they found neither comfort nor peace at night; arguing with each other, they wandered through the mountain caves.
पीड्यमानौ तु शीतेन तुषारप्रभवेन तौ । दंतघर्षं प्रकुर्वाणौ रोमांचितवपुर्द्धरौ
Afflicted by the cold born of frost, their teeth chattered, their bodies bristling with hair standing on end.
ऊचे पिशाचः स तदा तां पत्नीं स्वां पिशाचिकाम् । किमनल्पकृतं पापं दारुणं रोमहर्षणम्
Then the piśāca spoke to his piśāca wife: 'What grievous and dreadful sin have we committed, causing such horror?'
येन प्राप्तं पिशाचत्वं स्वेन दुष्कृतकर्मणा । नरकं दारुणं मत्वा पिशाचत्वं च दुःखदम्
'By what evil deed have we attained this piśāca state? Considering the terrible hell and the suffering of being a piśāca—'
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन पातकं न समाचरेत् । इति चिंतापरौ तत्र तावास्तां दुःखकर्षितौ
'Therefore, by every effort, one should not commit sin.' Thus, the two, absorbed in such thoughts, remained there, worn down by suffering.
दैवयोगात्तयोः प्राप्ता माघस्यैकादशी तिथिः । जयानामेति विख्याता तिथीनामुत्तमा तिथिः
By the arrangement of fate, the eleventh day of the bright half of Māgha arrived for them, known as Jayā, the foremost of all lunar days.
तस्मिन्दिने तु संप्राप्ते तावाहारविवर्जितौ । आसाते तत्र नृपते जलपानविवर्जितौ
On that day, O King, the two remained there without food, and even without drinking water.
न कृतो जीवघातश्च न पत्रफलभक्षणम् । अश्वत्थस्य समीपे तौ सर्वदा दुःखसंयुतौ
They did not take life, nor eat leaves or fruits; always joined with suffering, they stayed near an aśvattha tree.
रविरस्तंगतो राजंस्तथैव स्थितयोस्तयोः । प्राप्ता चैव निशा घोरा दारुणा प्राणहारिणी
When the sun set, O King, and as the two remained thus, the dreadful, life-taking night arrived.
वेपमानौ ततस्तौ तु ततः सुषुपतः क्षितौ । परस्परेण संलग्नौ गात्रयोर्भुजयोरपि
Then, shivering, the two lay down on the ground, clinging to each other with their limbs and arms.
न निद्रा न रतं तत्र न तौ सौख्यमविंदताम् । एवं तौ राजशार्दूल शापेनेंद्रस्य पीडितौ
There, they found neither sleep nor pleasure, nor did they attain any happiness; thus, O tiger among kings, the two were tormented by Indra's curse.
इत्थं तयोर्दुःखितयोर्निर्जगाम निशीथिनी । मार्तंड उदयं प्राप्तो द्वादशी दिवसागमे
In this way, as the two suffered, the night passed away; the sun rose with the coming of the twelfth day.
मया तु राजशार्दूल तयोर्मुक्तिर्धृता हृदि । जयायाः सुव्रतं चीर्णं रात्रौ जागरणं कृतम्
O tiger among kings, in my heart I resolved their liberation, for they had observed the vow of Jayā and kept vigil through the night.
तस्माद्व्रतप्रभावाच्च यथाजातं तथा शृणु । द्वादशीदिवसे प्राप्ते तथा चीर्णे जया व्रते
Therefore, listen as I recount, according to the power of the vow, what happened when the twelfth day arrived and the Jayā vow was thus observed.
विष्णोः प्रभावान्नृपते पिशाचत्वं तयोर्गतम् । पुष्पदंती माल्यवतौ पूर्वरूपौ बभूवतुः
By the power of Viṣṇu, O King, their piśāca state was removed, and Puṣpadaṃtī and Mālyavat regained their former forms.
पुरातनस्नेहयुतौ पूर्वालंकारधारिणौ । विमानमधिरूढौ तौ गतौ नाके मनोरमे
Bound by ancient affection and adorned as before, the two ascended the celestial chariot and went to the delightful heaven.
देवेंद्रस्याग्रतो गत्वा प्रणामं चक्रतुर्मुदा । तथाविधौ तु तौ दृष्ट्वा मघवा विस्मितोऽब्रवीत्
Approaching Indra, they joyfully offered their respects; seeing them in such a state, Maghavan spoke in astonishment.
इंद्र उवाच- वद तं केन पुण्येन पिशाचत्वं हि वां गतौ । मम शापं च संप्राप्तौ केन देवेन मोचितौ
Indra said: Tell me, by what merit did you both become piśācas, and by whose curse did you fall? By which god were you released?
माल्यवानुवाच- वासुदेवप्रसादेन जयायास्तु व्रतेन च । पिशाचत्वं गतं स्वामिंस्तव भक्तिप्रभावतः
Mālyavān said: By the grace of Vāsudeva and by Jayā's vow, we became piśācas, O Lord, through the power of your devotion.
इति श्रुत्वा तु मघवा प्रत्युवाच पुनस्तथा । पवित्रौ पावनौ जातौ वंदनीयौ ममापि च
Hearing this, Maghavan replied again in the same way: You have become pure and sanctified, and are worthy of reverence even to me.
हरिवासरकर्तारौ विष्णुभक्तिपरायणौ । हरिवासरसँल्लीना ये च कृष्णपरायणाः 6.43.
