Following the sage's instructions, the king Vaikhānasa performed the vow and, together with all, offered merit to his father.
As soon as the merit was given, there was a shower of flowers from the sky. The father of Vaikhānasa entered liberation along with the ancestors.
In the sky, he spoke a blessed message to the king: 'Blessings, blessings to you, my son,' and thus, he departed to heaven.
Thus, O king, whoever performs the auspicious Moksha Ekadashi, his sins are destroyed, and after death, he attains liberation.
There is no other Ekadashi that grants liberation greater than this. I do not know the count of its merits, O king; this vow is dear to me.
Indeed, this vow is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, bestowing liberation upon people. By reciting or hearing it, one obtains the fruit of a Vājapeya sacrifice.
Yudhishthira said: In the dark fortnight of Pausha, what is the name of the Ekadashi? What is its name, what is its observance, and which deity is worshipped on that day? Please tell me all this in detail, O Lord.
Shri Krishna said: I will tell you, O King, because of the bond of affection with you. My satisfaction is not as great from royal sacrifices with abundant gifts.
As satisfaction comes to me through the observance of Ekadashi, therefore, with all effort, one should perform the day of Hari.
This is true, not false, O expert among the righteous. The Ekadashi in the dark fortnight of Pausha is called Saphala by name.
On that day, one should worship the god Narayana according to proper procedure. The auspicious Ekadashi should be performed as prescribed previously.
As Shesha is among the serpents, Garuda among birds, Vishnu among the gods, and the twice-born among humans,
So, O King, among vows, Ekadashi is the best date. Those people, O King, are always worthy of worship by me.
Those who are absorbed in the day of Hari and observe the Ekadashi vow, here itself, endowed with wealth, if they die, they attain liberation.
On Saphala, O King, one should worship Hari by name with fruits: coconuts, betel nuts, and seed-filled offerings.
With lemons, pomegranates, and auspicious amla fruits, with cloves, jujubes, and especially with mangoes.
One should worship the Lord of gods with incense and lamps. On Saphala, especially, one should offer lamps.
At night, one should keep vigil together with Vaishnavas. For as long as the blink of an eye, whoever stays awake during the night—
With focused mind, O King, hear the merit of such a person. There is no sacrifice or pilgrimage equal to it.
O King, all vows do not equal even a sixteenth part of it. Nor does the fruit of a thousand years of austerity equal it.
He attains that fruit who keeps vigil. Hear, O tiger among kings, the auspicious story of Saphala.
There was a city called Champavati, belonging to Mahishmata. That royal sage had five sons, all princes.
Among them, the eldest was always engaged in great sin: an adulterer, attached to prostitutes, and a drunkard.
By his sinful actions, he squandered his father's wealth. Because of his bad conduct, he constantly reviled the Brahmins.
He constantly reviled the Vaiṣṇavas and the gods; seeing such a son, the king Māhiṣmata...
Among the princes, he became known by the name Lumpaka; because of this, he was expelled from the kingdom by his father and relatives.
Thus, abandoned by his family like an outcast, Lumpaka too was forsaken and began to reflect at that time.
I have been cast off by my relatives and expelled from the kingdom by my father; thinking thus, he then resolved upon a sinful course.
I must go into the dreadful, dense forest; and from there, I will plunder my father's entire city.
Having made up his mind in this way, Lumpaka, by the force of fate, left that city and went into the dense forest.
