Those whose bodies, inside and out, are enveloped by millions of sins, are freed on Vishnu's day if they keep vigil.
He has been handed over to the servants of Yama, and to Yama himself, who, having performed the vigil for Vishnu, violates the vow of Dvadashi.
O best of sages, those who desire heaven are liberated, there is no doubt; even the happiness of hell is attained by violating Hari's day.
By that act, ancestors are slain, the gods are destroyed, and the kingdom is given to the demons—by violating Hari's day.
He who dances with a joyful heart, clapping his hands, singing with his mouth, and displaying many kinds of delight—
Standing in front of Vasudeva during the night vigil, reciting the deeds of Krishna, delighting the assembly of Vaishnavas—
With his mouth he makes music, his body thrilled with joy, showing various servants and speaking as he wishes—
A man who, with these feelings, keeps vigil for Hari, in every moment gains the merit said to equal the fruit of millions of pilgrimages.
He whose mind is undisturbed, who performs incense and lamp offerings to Hari during the night vigil, becomes lord of the seven continents.
Whatever sins there are, even those equal to the killing of a Brahmin, all these are destroyed, piece by piece, by Krishna's vigil.
On one side are all the sacrifices, completed with their gifts; on the other, the vigil for the Lord of gods, beloved of Krishna.
There, Kashi, Pushkara, Prayaga, Naimisha, Gaya, the great field of Shalagrama, and the Arbud forest—
Pushkara, Mathura, and all the sacred places, as well as the four Vedas and sacrifices, go to Krishna's vigil.
The Ganga, Sarasvati, Tapi, Yamuna, Shatadru, Chandrabhaga, Vitasta—all the rivers are there.
All the lakes, ponds, and all the oceans, O best of twice-born, go to Krishna's vigil on Ekadashi.
Those men who, during Krishna's vigil, dance, sing, and play the vina in delight, are truly envied by the gods.
Thus, having kept vigil and worshipped the great Hari, one should break the fast on the twelfth day, together with the Vaiṣṇavas, according to one's ability.
Mahādeva said: Listen, O Brāhmaṇa, I shall tell you the supreme glory of the twelfth day; the Dvādaśī should always be known as bestowing sons and granting liberation.
Having bathed in the morning and worshipped Hari, one should dedicate the fast; O Keśava, by this vow the darkness of ignorance is dispelled.
Be pleased, O gracious-faced one, and grant the vision of knowledge; then, as possible, one should perform the breaking of the fast in the proper manner.
After that, one should act as desired, according to the rules; but when the Dvādaśī is short, O best of the twice-born, the breaking of the fast should be done accordingly.
Then, at night, the breaking of the fast should be done by one desiring liberation; at that time, there is no fault of night, nor is it ever prohibited.
What is said—that one should not bathe at night, nor feed others in the late night—should be performed in the two preceding watches of the night, as during the day.
When the Dvādaśī is short on the day of breaking the fast, one should perform both the morning and midday rites at dawn.
The merit of a man who always observes the Dvādaśī on earth—I am truly unable to describe it in detail.
Having fulfilled all desires, great souls such as Ambarīṣa and all those devotees renowned on earth have attained them.
Having observed the Dvādaśī, they went to the abode of Viṣṇu; truly, truly, and again truly, what I have said to you is so.
There is no god equal to Viṣṇu, nor any lunar day equal to Dvādaśī; whatever is given, consumed, or worshipped here attains fullness.
All that becomes complete when Mādhava is worshipped; what need is there to say more? Hari is dear to his devotees.
He grants all desires up to the end of the age; whatever is given on Dvādaśī, all that becomes fruitful.
