पवित्रोदकसंयुक्तं पंचरत्नसमन्वितम् । गंधपुष्पाक्षतैर्युक्तं कुंभं स्रग्दामभूषितम्
A pot filled with pure water, adorned with five gems, scented powders, flowers, and unbroken rice, and decorated with a garland, should be prepared.
पात्रं च सोदकं कार्यं गोधूमैश्चापि पूरितम् । नानारत्नैश्च संयुक्तं नानागंधैः प्रपूजितम्
A vessel with water should be made, filled with wheat, set with various gems, and worshipped with various fragrances.
मल्लिकामोदसंयुक्तं जातीपुष्पैः प्रपूजितम् । श्वेताख्यैस्तंदुलैश्चैव पूरणीयः प्रयत्नतः
It should be adorned with the fragrance of jasmine and worshipped with jātī flowers, and carefully filled with white rice grains.
प्रदद्याद्वस्त्रयुग्मं तु उपवीतं तु सोत्तरम् । उपानहौ तु राजर्षे आतपत्रं शिरोपरि
One should offer a pair of garments, a sacred thread with an upper cloth, shoes, and an umbrella to be held above the head, O royal sage.
भोजनं जलपात्रं च सप्तधान्यं तिलैः सह । रूप्यं चैव तु कार्पासं पायसं मुद्रिका हरेः
Food, a water vessel, seven kinds of grains with sesame, silver, cotton, sweet rice, and a ring for Hari should be given.
धेनुर्वात्र तु दातव्या वत्सालंकारसंयुता । सुवर्णशृंगी रौप्यखुरी ताम्रपृष्ठी तथैव च
A cow should be given, adorned with a calf, with golden horns, silver hooves, and a copper-plated back.
कांस्यदोहीं रत्नपुच्छीं दद्याद्वै गुरवे तदा । शय्यां सोपस्करां दद्यात्साधवे भक्तिपूर्वकम्
A bronze milking vessel and a cow with a jeweled tail should then be given to the teacher; a bed with its furnishings should be given to a devotee, with devotion.
धूपं दीपं तु नैवेद्यं फलपत्रं निवेदयेत् । पूजनीयो महाभक्तैर्मंत्रैरेभिस्तु केशवः 6.35.
Incense, a lamp, food offerings, and fruit-leaves should be presented; Keśava should be worshipped by great devotees with these mantras.
तुलसीपत्रसंयुक्तैः पुष्पैः कालोद्भवैस्तथा । मासनाम्नैव चरणौ जानुनी विष्णुरूपिणे
With tulasī leaves, flowers of the season, and in the name of the month, one should worship the feet and knees of the one who is in the form of Viṣṇu.
गुह्ये तु गुह्यपतये कटे वै पीतवाससे । ब्रह्ममूर्तिभृते नाभावुदरे विश्वयोनये
In the secret place, to the Lord of the secret; at the waist, to the one clad in yellow garments; at the navel, to the one who bears the form of Brahman, the source of the universe.
हृदये ज्ञानगम्याय कंठे वैकुंठमूर्तये । ऊर्द्ध्वगाय ललाटे तु बाहौ दक्षांतकारिणे
In the heart, to the one accessible through knowledge; at the throat, to the form of Vaikuṇṭha; on the forehead, to the one who ascends upwards; on the arms, to the destroyer of Dakṣa.
उत्तमांगे सुरेशाय सर्वांगे सर्वमूर्तये । स्वनाम्ना चायुधादीनि पूजनीयानि भक्तितः
On the crown of the head, to the lord of the gods; on the whole body, to the one who is all-formed; and with his own names and weapons, all should be worshipped with devotion.
अर्घदानं प्रकर्तव्यं नालिकेरादिभिः समम् । शंखोपरि जले कृत्वा गंधपुष्पाक्षतान्वितम्
The offering of arghya should be made, together with coconut and other items; placing water upon a conch, along with fragrance, flowers, and rice grains.
सूत्रेणावेष्टितं कृत्वा दद्यादर्घं विधानतः । देवदेव महादेव श्रीकेशव जनार्दन
Having wrapped it with a thread, one should offer the arghya according to the proper method, saying: 'O God of gods, great god, Śrī Keśava, Janārdana!'
सुब्रह्मण्य नमस्तेऽस्तु पुण्यराशिविवर्धन । शोकमोहमहापापान्मामुद्धर भवार्णवात्
'O Subrahmaṇya, salutations to you, increaser of the store of merit; rescue me from the ocean of worldly existence, from great sins of grief, delusion, and darkness.'
सुकृतं न कृतं किचिज्जन्मकोटिशतैरपि । तथापि मां महास्वामिन्मामुद्धर भवार्णवात्
'No good deed has been done by me, even in hundreds of millions of births; yet, O great Lord, rescue me from the ocean of worldly existence.'
व्रतेनानेन देवेश ये चान्ये मम पूर्वजाः । वियोनिं च गताश्चान्ये पापमृत्युवशं गताः
'By this vow, O Lord of gods, and for all my other ancestors, and those who have entered other wombs, and those who have fallen under the sway of sin and death—'
ये भविष्यंति येऽतीताः प्रेतलोकान्समुद्धर । श्रांतोस्म्यहमधीनस्य भक्तिरव्यभिचारिणी
'Those who will be, those who have been, rescue them from the realms of the departed; I am weary, my devotion is unwavering though I am powerless.'
दत्तमर्घं मया तुभ्यं भक्त्या गृह्ण गदाधर । दत्वार्घं धूपदीपाद्यैर्नैवेद्यैर्विष्णुसंभवैः
'I have offered arghya to you with devotion; accept it, O wielder of the mace. Having offered arghya, with incense, lamps, and food prepared for Viṣṇu—'
स्तोत्रैर्नीराजनैर्गीतैर्भृत्यैः संतोषयेद्धरिम् । वस्त्रैर्दानैश्च गोदानैर्भोजनैस्तोषयेद्गुरुम्
'With hymns, arati, songs, and by servants, one should please Hari; with garments, gifts, donations of cows, and food, one should please the guru.'
तथातथा विधातव्यं गुरुर्वै प्रीतिमाप्नुयात् । लोकानां तारणार्थाय धात्रा सृष्टो गुरुर्यतः
Thus, and in this manner, it should be done so that the guru attains satisfaction; for the guru was created by the Creator for the deliverance of the worlds.
अतो वै गुरुपूजा च कर्त्तव्या वै प्रयत्नतः । अहितं यो नाशयति स्वहितं दर्शयेत्सदा
Therefore, worship of the guru must indeed be performed with great care; he who removes harm and always shows one's own good.
स गुरुः स च विज्ञेयः सर्वधर्मार्थकोविदः । अकुर्वन्वित्तशाठ्यं तु गुरवे तं निवेदयेत्
He is the guru, he should be known as such, who is wise in all the meanings of dharma; without deceit regarding wealth, one should offer it to the guru.
गुरोर्निवेदिते भूप परिपूर्णं भवेद्व्रतम् । कृत्वा दिवातनं कर्म भोजनं ब्राह्मणैः सह
When it has been offered to the guru, O king, the vow becomes complete; having performed the day's rites, one should eat together with the brāhmaṇas.
कर्त्तव्यं नृपशार्दूल दिनं नेयं कथानकैः । अनेन विधिना यस्तु कुर्यादुन्मीलनीव्रतम्
This should be done, O best of kings, and the day should be spent with stories; whoever performs the Unmīlanī vow according to this method—
कल्पकोटिसहस्राणि वसते विष्णुसन्निधौ
He dwells in the presence of Viṣṇu for thousands of millions of aeons.
नारद उवाच- कीदृशी स्यान्महादेव पक्षवर्द्धनिसंज्ञका । यया वै कृतया जंतुर्महपापात्प्रमुच्यते
Nārada said: 'O great god, what is the nature of the vow called Pakṣavardhinī, by which, when performed, a being is freed from great sin?'
श्रीमहादेव उवाच- अमा वा यदि वा पूर्णा संपूर्णा जायते तदा । भूत्वा वै नाडिकाषष्ठिर्जायते प्रतिपद्दिने । अश्वमेधायुतैस्तुल्या सा भवेत्पक्षवर्द्धिनी
Śrī Mahādeva said: 'Whether without or with amā, when it is complete, it arises; being sixty nāḍikās, it occurs on the first day; it is equal to ten thousand horse sacrifices—such is the Pakṣavardhinī.'
नारद उवाच- पूजाविधिं तु पृच्छामि सांप्रतं देवसत्तम । यत्कृते तु महादेव महाफलमवाप्नुयात्
Nārada said: I now ask you, O best of the gods, about the procedure of worship, by which one attains great merit, O Mahādeva.
महादेव उवाच- पूजाविधिं प्रवक्ष्यामि सांप्रतं द्विजनंदन । पूजिते चार्चिते विष्णौ फलं प्राप्नोत्यसंशयः
Mahādeva said: I shall now explain to you, O delight of the twice-born, the procedure of worship, by which, when Viṣṇu is worshipped and honored, one certainly attains the fruit.
