To the thousand-armed, the arms; to the yogic form, the eyes. After worshipping properly with devotion, one should offer arghya according to the procedure.
With a pure coconut placed atop a conch, wrapped with threads, one should offer it with both hands.
Remembering you, O Janārdana, removes sins, bad dreams, evil omens, and troubling thoughts.
O god, hellish fear and misfortune arise from this. Whatever may befall me, O great god, whether in this world or the next—
Therefore, O Lord of gods, protect me; accept this arghya. Salutations to you. May your compassionate gaze always rest upon me, O Damodara.
Incense, lamp, and food should be offered, then the nīrājana rite performed. The best of rivers should wave the lotus of Hari above the head.
Having performed this procedure, one should then worship one's own guru. Gold, garments with a turban, and a tunic should be given.
One should also give sandals, a parasol, a ring, a water pot, food, betel, seven kinds of grain, and a monetary gift.
Having worshipped the revered Lord, one should keep vigil for Hari, accompanied by singing, dancing, and the recitation of scriptures.
At the end of the night, one should offer arghya to the deity according to the prescribed method, perform bathing and other rites, and then eat together with the household.
Śiva said: O twice-born, whoever hears this wondrous and thrilling account of the Trispṛśā, attains merit equal to that gained by bathing in the Ganges.
By observing the Trispṛśā fast, one obtains the same fruit as a thousand Aśvamedha sacrifices and a hundred Vājapeya sacrifices.
Freed along with the paternal, maternal, and personal lineages, one is honored in the world of Viṣṇu.
Whatever merit exists in a crore of sacred waters, whatever fruit in a crore of holy places, that fruit is obtained by observing the Trispṛśā fast.
Whether Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas with pure minds, Vaiśyas, those born as Śūdras, or people of other castes—
All of them attain liberation after leaving this earth, O best of twice-born; just as the twelve-syllable mantra is the king of mantras—
So too is this vow among vows, by which the Trispṛśā is performed, first undertaken by Brahmā and later by royal sages.
What need to speak of others, dear one? The Trispṛśā bestows liberation. By this method, O Brahman, is the vow of Trispṛśā established.
Whoever performs this vow with devotion—hear from me its fruit: the merit gained by bathing in the Ganges at Vārāṇasī.
For thousands of aeons, the fruit of performing the Trispṛśā is equal to the merit of bathing in the eastern Yamunā for crores of years.
That fruit is obtained by the man who observes the Trispṛśā vow; and the same fruit as at Kurukṣetra during crores of solar eclipses.
By performing the Trispṛśā, with gifts of hundreds of loads of gold, thousands of crores of sins and hundreds of crores of acts of killing are destroyed.
With a single observance of fasting, all are quickly reduced to ashes; the vow of Trispṛśā grants a path even to those without one.
Those who desire a path, O best of sages, and even those with hundreds of great sins—this was spoken by Kṛṣṇa himself in the presence of Vyāsa.
Whoever writes down and reveals this Vaiṣṇava vow to a Brāhmaṇa, even if bound by heaps of sins, will attain liberation.
This is attained by the virtuous even after hundreds of aeons; the Trispṛśā is rare in the world, not easily obtained by mortals.
In the Kali age, those lowest among men who, having obtained the trispṛśā, do not perform the rites—their birth and life indeed become fruitless.
By them, the state of a departed spirit is not overcome without śrāddha rites or sons; but those who, even once in the Kali age, perform the trispṛśā, O wise one, are freed.
Mahādeva said: Therefore, I shall now declare to you the supreme rite of awakening, by merely hearing which one is freed from the bondage of birth and worldly existence.
A sinful soul is released from sins and honored in the heavenly world; the gods and ancestors also attain that state through it.
