That which surpasses Sarasvati, exceeds hundreds of millions of holy places, surpasses hundreds of millions of sacrifices, and is greater than vows and gifts—
That which surpasses recitation and oblation, grants the fruits of the four aims of life, surpasses Sankhya and Yoga—let the auspicious Trisprisha be performed.
In whichever month it occurs, if the bright fortnight is present, it should be observed at the foremost river; by doing so, one is freed from sin.
Jahnavi said: O Lord, tell me, O beautiful Madhava, what kind of 'trispṛśā' is this, whose greatness you have just described to me?
When, on a single day, the auspicious Dashami and Ekadashi occur together, that is called 'trispṛśā', O Lord; or else, tell me otherwise, O Master.
Krishna said: The 'asurī trispṛśā', O goddess, which you mentioned, must be carefully avoided, just as one avoids a husband who has lost his virtue.
It is said to belong to the asuras and destroys lifespan and strength; it must be carefully avoided, just as a woman in her menses is to be shunned.
That which abandons its own class and goes to the lowest castes—such a day is especially to be avoided, for my day joined with Dashami is thus.
Just as those who associate with a menstruating woman become defiled and deprived of knowledge, so too, my day joined with Dashami is defiled for people.
Observing the 'trispṛśā' fast destroys a hundred thousand acts of killing; when Ekadashi, Dwadashi, and Trayodashi fall in the remaining night.
But know that 'trispṛśā' joined with Dashami is not so; if a man commits an offense, he is freed by performing atonement.
I do not forgive the fault arising from Dashami, O river goddess; by consuming it, one has eaten poison, like drinking deadly venom.
One who observes the Ekadashi vow mixed with Dashami should not do so, thinking thus; my day joined with Dashami must not be observed.
The merit accumulated over millions of births is destroyed; it causes one's family to fall from heaven and leads them to hells like Raurava.
Having purified one's own body, my day should be observed; in old age it is to be abandoned, except when joined with Vedha, Shravan, and similar occasions.
The merit of birth is lost for those who fast on Ekadashi, especially when it increases and doubt arises.
By my command, Dwadashi, which is dear to me, must be observed.
Jahnavi said: O Lord of the universe, I will observe 'trispṛśā' as you have instructed; by your command, I shall become free from all sins.
Sri Krishna said: Go to your own place, may you fare well; you need never fear, O goddess, O best of rivers, no sin will reach you.
Those who, after bathing in the waters of Sarasvati, worship Madhava and bow to the Lord of the universe, attain the highest state.
Jāhnavī said: Tell me the procedure, O Brahman; I will perform it with all my resources. I seek to please the Lord of the gods, Damodara, the flawless one.
Prācīmādhava said: Listen, O goddess, I will explain the procedure for the Trispṛśā rite. Hearing it alone, O best of rivers, a person is freed from sins.
With a weight, or half a weight, or even a quarter of a weight of gold, a golden image of me should be made, according to one's means.
A copper vessel should be prepared, filled with sesame seeds. A pure pot with water, adorned with five gems, should also be arranged.
It should be wrapped with garlands of flowers, scented with camphor and agarwood. After bathing and anointing Damodara, place him at the rear.
Then clothing should be provided, consisting of a pair of garments. Worship should be performed with mantras spoken in the Purāṇas, with pure flowers of the season and tender leaves of tulasi.
One should offer a parasol to Viṣṇu, together with a pair of sandals. Many delightful fruits should also be presented.
A sacred thread, along with a new, strong upper garment, should be given. A beautiful, elevated, sturdy Vaiṣṇava staff should be offered.
To Damodara, the feet; to Mādhava, the knees; to the giver of desires, the secret region; to the form of Vāmana, the waist.
To Padmanābha, the navel; to Viśvayoni, the abdomen; to the one attainable by knowledge, the heart; to the one who goes to Vaikuṇṭha, the throat.
