By the instruction of Śakra, the killing arising from Namuci was destroyed, O chief among sages, through the observance of the Trispṛśā.
Sins such as Brahma-murder are destroyed by the observance of the Trispṛśā, O foremost of Brāhmaṇas; what need is there to speak of other sins?
Neither at Prayāga, nor at Kāśī, nor at Gomati in the presence of Kṛṣṇa, does liberation occur, O foremost of Brāhmaṇas, if the Trispṛśā is not performed.
By dying at Prayāga, or at Gomati in the presence of Kṛṣṇa, or merely by bathing in Gomati, eternal liberation is attained.
Even while living at home, liberation is attained by the observance of the Trisprisha, even for one engaged in sensual pleasures and enjoyment.
For one who has renounced sensual objects, liberation is difficult to obtain even through Sankhya; therefore, O foremost of Brahmins, practice the Trisprisha, which grants liberation.
Narada said: O best of the gods, what is that great vow called Trisprisha, which you have now described to me as granting liberation to the twice-born?
Mahadeva said: O Brahmin, formerly, Madhava told the Trisprisha to Jahnavi, out of compassion, on the eastern bank of the Sarasvati.
Jahnavi said: In the age of Kali, people, burdened with millions of sins such as the killing of Brahmins, perform bathing in my waters.
Because of the faults of their hundreds of sins, my body has been defiled; O Garuda-bannered Lord, how will my sin be removed?
Eastern Madhava said: I shall tell you—do not doubt, my daughter, nor grieve. My abode is at Shyamovata, and the Eastern Goddess stands before me.
The daughter of Brahma flows there, and the Queen of the gods is seen ahead; bathe there daily, and you will become purified.
Where the Eastern daughter of Brahma is, there I am—of this there is no doubt; I dwell there with hundreds of millions of holy places and with the gods.
That place, dear to me, is pure and destroys millions of killings; I have given it, being pleased, because you are dearer to me than life.
Hundreds of thousands of holy places always abide, by my command, in the waters of the Eastern Sarasvati, O Jahnavi.
From killing a Brahmin, drinking liquor, killing a cow, killing a woman of low caste, stealing Brahmin's wealth, and failing to worship mother and father—
From performing forbidden acts, betraying the teacher, eating what should not be eaten, and committing all kinds of sins—O daughter, the Eastern Brahma's daughter—
She removes sins by a single bath before me; bathe in the best of rivers, and you will become free from sin.
Jahnavi said: O Lord of the gods, I am not able to come here always; tell me, O Madhava, how sins are destroyed here.
Eastern Madhava said: If you are not able to come here always, O Jahnavi, then I will tell you another means, since you have arisen from my feet.
That which surpasses Sarasvati, exceeds hundreds of millions of holy places, surpasses hundreds of millions of sacrifices, and is greater than vows and gifts—
That which surpasses recitation and oblation, grants the fruits of the four aims of life, surpasses Sankhya and Yoga—let the auspicious Trisprisha be performed.
In whichever month it occurs, if the bright fortnight is present, it should be observed at the foremost river; by doing so, one is freed from sin.
Jahnavi said: O Lord, tell me, O beautiful Madhava, what kind of 'trispṛśā' is this, whose greatness you have just described to me?
When, on a single day, the auspicious Dashami and Ekadashi occur together, that is called 'trispṛśā', O Lord; or else, tell me otherwise, O Master.
Krishna said: The 'asurī trispṛśā', O goddess, which you mentioned, must be carefully avoided, just as one avoids a husband who has lost his virtue.
It is said to belong to the asuras and destroys lifespan and strength; it must be carefully avoided, just as a woman in her menses is to be shunned.
That which abandons its own class and goes to the lowest castes—such a day is especially to be avoided, for my day joined with Dashami is thus.
Just as those who associate with a menstruating woman become defiled and deprived of knowledge, so too, my day joined with Dashami is defiled for people.
Observing the 'trispṛśā' fast destroys a hundred thousand acts of killing; when Ekadashi, Dwadashi, and Trayodashi fall in the remaining night.
