शृण्वंति पापचर्चां च तेषां रुष्टोस्म्यहं सदा । द्विषंति नाथं ये मूढा अनाथस्वं हरंति ये
and those who listen to discussions of sin—toward them I am always angry; fools who hate their protector, or who seize the property of the helpless—
विश्वासघातिनो ये च तेषां रुष्टोऽस्म्यहं सदा । ये च गोवीर्यहंतारो वृषलीपतयश्च ये
and those who betray trust—toward them I am always angry; those who kill cows for their strength, and those who are husbands of outcast women—
अश्वत्थघातिनो ये च तेषां रुष्टोऽस्म्यहं सदा । ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशानां मध्ये ये भेदकारिणः
and those who cut down sacred fig trees—toward them I am always angry; and those who create division among Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—
परदारातिरक्ता ये तेषां रुष्टोऽस्म्यहं सदा । एकादश्यां भुंजते ये लोभात्पापधियो नराः
and those who are excessively attached to another's wife—toward them I am always angry; and those sinful men who, out of greed, eat on the eleventh day (Ekadashi)—
वेदनिंदाकरा ये च तेषांरुष्टोऽस्म्यहं सदा । पापबुद्धिरता ये च मित्रद्रोहरतास्तथा
I am always angry with those who revile the Vedas, those who are devoted to wicked thoughts, and those who are inclined to betray friends.
धात्रीतरुं च ये घ्नंति तेषां रुष्टोऽस्म्यहं सदा । दिवसे मैथुनं ये च कुर्वंते काममोहिताः
I am always angry with those who cut down the dhatri tree, and with those who, overcome by desire, engage in intercourse during the day.
रजस्वला स्त्रियां चैव तेषां रुष्टोऽस्म्यहं सदा । ये चादृष्टार्तवां नारीं मोहाद्गच्छंति सत्तम
I am always angry with those who approach a menstruating woman, and with those who, out of delusion, go to a woman whose period has not been seen, O noble one.
व्रतस्थां च सदा जाल्मास्ते मां नयंति शत्रुताम् । अमावास्यातिथौ ये च कुर्वंते निशिभोजनम्
Those who, being wicked, disturb someone engaged in a vow, bring enmity with me; and those who eat at night on the new moon or guest days.
भोजनद्वयमेवार्के तेषां रुष्टोऽस्म्यहं सदा । आमिषं मैथुनं तैलममावास्यादिने द्विजाः
I am always angry with those who eat two meals on a Sunday; and, O twice-born, those who do not abstain from meat, intercourse, or oil on the new moon day.
न ये त्यजंति विप्रेन्द्र तेषां रुष्टोऽस्म्यहं सदा । बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन संक्षेपात्ते वदाम्यहम्
O best of Brahmins, I am always angry with those who do not give up these things; what more need be said? I will tell you briefly.
निंदंति वैष्णवान्ये च तेषां रुष्टोस्म्यहं सदा । व्यास उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा भगवान्विष्णुरदृश्यः सहसाऽभवत्
I am always angry with those who revile Vaishnavas. Vyasa said: Having spoken thus, Lord Vishnu suddenly became invisible.
स च विप्रः समुत्तस्थौ त्यक्तनिद्रस्तु मंचतः । केशवोक्तेन वाक्येन स विप्रो हरिभक्तिकृत्
And that Brahmin rose up, having abandoned sleep from his bed; by the words spoken by Keshava, that Brahmin became devoted to Hari.
संत्यज्य सकलं कार्यं क्रियायोगरतोऽभवत् । नारायणस्य नैवेद्यं भुंजतोऽपि फलं त्विदम्
Abandoning all other duties, he became engaged in the practice of ritual; even by eating the offering of Narayana, this is the fruit.
हरिपूजाकृतां पुंसां न जाने किं भवेदिति । समासेन ब्रवीमि त्वां शृणु सत्तम जैमिने
I do not know what result comes to a person who worships Hari; I will tell you briefly—listen, O noble Jaimini.
सकृत्कृत्वा हरेः पूजां प्राप्यते परमं पदम्। मानुष्यं दुर्ल्लभं लोके पूजा तत्रापि चक्रिणः
By worshipping Hari even once, one attains the supreme state; human birth is rare in this world, and worship of the wielder of the discus is rarer still.
भक्तिस्तत्रापि विप्रेन्द्र दुर्ल्लभा परिकीर्तिता
O best of Brahmins, even among those, devotion is said to be exceedingly rare.
संसाराब्धिं सर्वदुःखप्रपूर्णं तर्तुं वांछा यस्य चित्तेस्ति पुंसः । भक्त्या नित्यं वासुदेवस्य पूजां कुर्यादार्यः कर्मणां सोऽखिलानाम्
For the person whose mind desires to cross the ocean of worldly existence, filled with all sorrows, the noble one should always worship Vasudeva with devotion, for he is the doer of all actions.
सूत उवाच- एकादश्याः फलं श्रुत्वा सुप्रीतो जैमिनिस्ततः । कृताञ्जलिरुवाचेदं कृष्णद्वैपायनं प्रभुम्
Suta said: Hearing the fruit of Ekadashi, Jaimini was greatly pleased; with joined palms, he spoke these words to the lord Krishna Dvaipayana.
जैमिनिरुवाच- विष्णोर्देवस्य माहात्म्यं त्वत्प्रसादाच्छ्रुतं मया । तुलस्या ब्रूहि माहात्म्यं शृण्वतां पापनाशनम्
Jaimini said: By your grace I have heard of the greatness of Vishnu, the god; tell me now the greatness of Tulasi, which destroys sin for those who listen.
व्यास उवाच- इन्द्राद्यैर्दैवतैः सर्वैस्तुलसी भगवत्यसौ । संसेव्या सर्वदा विप्र चतुर्वर्गफलप्रदा
Vyasa said: O Brahmin, Tulasi, the blessed one, is always served by all the gods, including Indra and the others; she grants the fruits of the four aims of life.
स्वर्गे मर्त्ये च पाताले तुलसी दुर्ल्लभा सताम् । चतुर्वर्गफलप्राप्तिस्तस्यां भक्तिः करोति वै
In heaven, on earth, and in the underworld, Tulasi is rare among the virtuous; devotion to her indeed brings attainment of the four aims of life.
यत्रैकस्तुलसीवृक्षस्तिष्ठत्यपि च सत्तम । तत्रैव त्रिदशाः सर्वे ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादयः
Where even a single Tulasi tree stands, O noble one, there all the gods, including Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and others, reside.
केशवः पत्रमध्ये च पत्राग्रे च प्रजापतिः । पत्रवृंते शिवस्तिष्ठेत्तुलस्याः सर्वदैव हि
Keśava dwells in the center of the leaf, Prajāpati at its tip, and Śiva always resides at the base of the tulasī leaf.
लक्ष्मी सरस्वती चैव गायत्री चंडिका तथा । सर्वाश्चान्या देवपत्न्यस्तत्पत्रेषु वंसति च
Lakṣmī, Sarasvatī, Gāyatrī, Caṇḍikā, and all other wives of the gods also reside upon those leaves.
इन्द्रो ऽग्नि शमनश्चैव नैरृतिर्वरुणस्तथा । पवनश्च कुबरेश्च तच्छाखायां वसंत्यमी
Indra, Agni, Yama, Nairṛta, Varuṇa, Vāyu, and Kubera dwell upon the branches of the tulasī.
आदित्यादि ग्रहाः सर्वे विश्वेदेवाश्च सर्वदा । वसवो मुनयश्चैव तथा देवर्षयोऽखिलाः
All the planets beginning with the sun, the Viśvedevas, the Vasus, sages, and all divine rishis always reside there.
कोटिब्रह्माण्डमध्येषु यानि तीर्थानि भूतले । तुलसीदलमाश्रित्य तान्येव निवसंति वै
All the sacred places that exist within countless universes on earth take refuge in the tulasī leaf and dwell there.
तुलसीं सेवते यस्तु भक्तिभावसमन्वितः । सेवितास्तेन तीर्थाश्च देवा ब्रह्मादयस्तथा
Whoever serves tulasī with devotion is served by the sacred places and the gods, beginning with Brahmā.
छिन्दंति तृणजालानि तुलसीमूलजानि ये । तद्देहस्थां ब्रह्महत्यां क्षिणत्ति तत्क्षणाद्धरिः
Those who cut the grass at the root of tulasī, Hari instantly destroys the brahma-hatya (sin of killing a brāhmaṇa) residing in their body.
ग्रीष्मकाले द्विजश्रेष्ठ सुगंधैः शीतलैर्जलैः । तुलसीसेचनं कृत्वा नरो निर्वाणमाप्नुयात्
O best of twice-born, whoever waters tulasī in summer with fragrant and cool water attains liberation.
